CHAPTER 31

LUCY

I send that message as I am still in the office scared to leave later. Lizzie is still here for now but she will be leaving in about 2 hours. I don’t know what to do and I have been putting it off all day. Now that it is getting closer to the end of the night and I know they both aren’t going to be home I am getting scared.

I didn’t want to freak them out but I am freaking out and I am not trying to let Lizzie know either. But, I know if I tell her that I got a threat she won’t let me go home alone which is a good thing. 

My phone starts ringing and it’s Travis. I watch it ring for a second because I know he is upset with me that I didn’t tell them sooner. 

“Hey baby!”

He sighs, “What do you mean you got a threat?”

“Hold on, let me get to my office.” I nod at Lizzie to let her know I will be right back and shut the door to my office behind me. I take a seat and let out a sigh. 

“I am so sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. But, when I went to my car this morning there was a piece of paper in my seat that said ‘He is mine bitch! Leave him alone!’. I didn’t know if it was some sort of prank or an actual threat and I have been just keeping myself busy with work. I didn’t want to bother either of you because I know how busy you two are.”

There is silence before he speaks, “Baby that sounds like a really serious fucking threat and I am not going to take this lightly. I wish you would have told me sooner. I can get a cop to go sit at the house. Do you still have the paper with you?”

“Yeah it is in the back seat of the car. I didn’t know what to do with it.”

He sighs, “Okay good. I am going to send a cop to your shop and he is going to take it as evidence. He will search the car and see if there are any fingerprints other than ours.”

“No, please don’t send them here. Have them meet me at the house later. I don't want Lizzie freaking out or knowing what is going on.”

Sounding a little angry, “Fine but I want you to call me as soon as you leave work and not a second later.”

“Yes sir I will. Again, I am so sorry I waited.”

He calms his voice, “I get it honey. But you have both of us to protect you and we won’t let anything happen to you I promise.”

“Okay baby I will call you later I love you.”

He is still calm, “I love you too baby. I will call Adam to fill him in on what is going on.”

“Thank you baby.”

I hang up the phone and throw my hands up to my face as I begin to cry. I don’t cry because I am sad. I am crying because I am mad and more mad at myself than anything. I wipe my tears and make sure I look decent before walking back out to the lobby. 

Lizzie walks over to me, “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything is okay. Why do you ask?”

She clears her throat, “You have seemed a little off today and a little skittish. I just want to make sure you are okay.”

“Yes Lizzie I am fine, thank you. We have a little bit more we can get done today before we go home. So, let’s get back to it!”

Thankfully she nods and believes me as she goes back to work. 

TRAVIS

I hung up the phone with Lucy and I immediately called Adam to fill him in. He is just as panicked as me and is very confused by what the message means. I called my boss down to my office to fill her in and she agreed with what I told Lucy that we can send a cop to the house when she gets off. 

She also agreed that a cop can sit at the house until I get home. I didn’t fill her in that it wasn’t just me going to the house but that is none of her business. I called Adam back to tell him to wait until I was on my way home so the cops wouldn't try and pull anything with him. I don’t want him to get harmed because he is just going home too. 

I am too distracted to even worry about the cases on my desk but I know I need to get back to them. My boss told me not to worry that we would get to the bottom of this. But, it is kind of hard to do that when it’s my wife we are talking about. 

My mind is all over the place and all I can think about is somebody harming the love of my life. I wouldn’t know what to do without her and I am damn sure going to do anything in my power to keep her safe. 

The cop that my boss got me is on speed dial ready to go at a moment's notice and he is only ten minutes from our house. So, he should get there right before Lucy gets home. He has been instructed to inspect the house before she goes in and he is to call me when she is safely inside. 

I need to get to work so I can get home as quickly as possible. The faster I get these done the faster I can get to her and make her feel safer in our arms. My phone begins to ring and it’s Lucy. 

“Hey baby, are you leaving work?”

She sounds scared, “Yes baby I am locking the doors now and heading to my car.”

“Okay baby girl. Let me call the officer now and he should be there when you get home. Let him do his job please and just stay in the house until we get home.”

She sounds calmer, “Yes sir, I will. I will just feel a lot safer when you two are home with me.”

“I know, baby girl and we will be home as fast as we can. I love you honey, let me call him and text me when you get home please.”

I can sense how scared she is, “I will, I love you too baby.”

I call the cop, he immediately acknowledges and tells me he is headed to the house now. I just wish I could be there now for her.
