Chapter 12
Chapter 12
“Jesus keep us safe.” That is all she says and then offers us something to drink. We both decline but she gets up and goes into the kitchen anyway claiming she is thirsty. I know my mother. She isn’t thirsty at all. She is in the kitchen praying more than likely, which is a relief to me. I think we are going to need all the prayers we can get. I’ve been silently praying since I found out this news. Suddenly a thought hits me.
“Jay, what are we going to do about my mother, sister, and Alexa’s grandparents? We can’t leave them here with that crazy person on the loose while we go into hiding.” She just smiles up at me.
“That has already been taken care of baby.” She gets up as my mom walks back into the living room then says to my mother, “Mom are you ready to go?” My mother shakes her head yes. I must look perplexed because they both smile at me and just shake their heads.
“Renee’, your mother and sister were already told to be ready to go before we got here. You would have been the first told to get ready but you were in the tub and unable to answer my phone calls. I didn’t tell them the details, but I did ask them to be ready. Your sister and her husband are already waiting at the airport with security, so I think we’d better hurry and get there before she starts getting worried.” My mother and I go upstairs and gently pick up the children and carry them to the car strapping them into their seats. Thankfully neither of them wakes up as we head to the airport. Instead of going inside the airport we go around and head to the hangar that Jay’s company jet is stored. Once there two men come over and help us out of the car and get our things loaded onto the plane. My sister runs over to us and she looks a little frantic.
“What the hell is going on? I’m called in the middle of the night and told to be ready to leave at a moments’ notice and that a car is coming to pick us up. Then we get here and nobody else is here except security people and they aren’t telling us anything.” I quickly glance at the children making sure her yelling and the noise of the plane hasn’t woken them up. I’m only lucky with one staying sleep. Nicholas wakes up and just looks around thankfully, but Alexa is fast asleep. I just smile. That girl can sleep through a damn hurricane. I cradle my son and try to calm my sister down.
“Look we will explain everything once we’re on the plane. Right now I just want to get the hell out of here.” I call to one of the security guards and have him escort my mother and the children onto the plane. I hand him Nicholas and tell him to help my mother get them settled in the bedroom that is on board.
“Yes ma’am Mrs. Lexington.” Once they make their way to the plane I start looking around for Alexa’s grandparents, then find them sitting down inside the hangar. I call to another security guard and have him escort them onto the plane as well, then tell him to make sure one of them stays on the plane and for the other to come back. He nods to me and walks over to them, then escorts them onto the plane. Jay is talking to the pilot and other employees making sure everything is taken care of, something about flight plans and other mechanical stuff that I know nothing about, while my sister, her husband, and I wait for her. When she’s done, she walks back over to us and places an arm around my waist.
“Well we are all set to go. Renee’ you ready?” She asks me that as if I have a choice.
“As ready as I’ll ever be honey. I already had the others escorted onto the plane and left one guard to watch them.” She nods her approval and we all turn to board the plane. I go and check on my mother and children to find all of them fast asleep on the bed. I pull the covers over all of them and head back out to the cabin with the others and take a seat next to my wife. She puts a hand on my thigh and I put my head on her shoulder. My sister and her husband are sitting in the seats that are in front facing us. They each have a drink in their hands and suddenly I wish that I could drink as well but I can’t with the medication that I’m taking right now. Jay squeezes my thigh as though sensing my anxiety and I instantly relax. I give her a slight smile and begin looking out of the window. There is nothing that I can see of course since we left in the middle of the night, but I stare out of the window anyway. Jay begins filling them in on what is happening after my sister has another episode, which scared me and startled me from my daydreaming.
“So you’re telling us that there is someone else out there that could possibly want to hurt my sister again, or you?” Jay just shakes her head yes and I turn back towards the window when they all turn and look at me.
“Sissy, how are you doing with all of this?” My sister asks me this with so much concern in her voice that I have no choice but to tell the truth.
“To be honest, I don’t think it has totally hit me yet. I feel like for the first time since being home I was starting to get my life back, and now it has been ripped away from me again. The only silver lining is that this time I get to be with the ones that I love. I just want my happy life back.” We are all silent after I speak and in the next instant, I don’t know what came over me, but I jumped up out of my seat and started yelling.
“I mean what the hell is wrong with people?! If you want a company so damn bad then sit down, draw up a business plan, and make it happen, but you don’t have to try to steal what someone else has worked so hard to get for themselves. I’ll tell you what’s wrong with them; nobody wants to put in the work anymore. Everyone is just fucking lazy and wants everything handed to them instead of working hard to earn it for themselves. Well I’ll tell you one thing, I don’t know who this asshole is, but I’ll be damned if he gets any part of my wife’s company. He’s a dead man if he even thinks of coming near my family.”
Everyone is looking at me stunned and I realize that I have been pacing back and forth while I was screaming. Jay reaches a hand out to me and I take it as she guides me back to my seat. I sit down and she places both her hands, one on each side of my face, then she pulls me in for a gentle kiss. Immediately I begin to calm down and relax slightly.
“Baby nothing is going to happen to any of us.” I pull away from her and just look at her for a moment.
“Jay, there is no way that you can guarantee that, and I know you mean well but we are all adults here. We don’t know what is going to happen, but I’m hoping and praying that nothing does happen to any of us. I know you’re worrying about me because of what happened, but trust me when I say that I am much stronger now.” She pats my thigh and I can see some of the tension leave her eyes. My sister and her husband have moved away from us, closer to the back of the plane, and are engaged in a conversation. The stewardess comes by and asks if we need anything and I tell her that I would like a glass of orange juice and some crackers. She nods and walks away to get my order. When she returns, I thank her and she looks at my wife asking if she would like anything, but Jay is lost in thought so I tell her to just bring her a Bud Light and some chips. She walks off again and I stare at my wife while she stares off into space.
“Jay, what are you thinking so hard about?” Finally she comes out of her trance, looks at me, and then kisses me so passionately that I can barely breathe when it’s over.
“What was that for?” I pant trying to catch my breath.
“Renee’, I love you so much. You and the kids mean the world to me and I am not going to let anything happen to you or them. I’ll die if it means that you and the children are safe.” I don’t like where this conversation is going at all.
“I don’t want you talking like that baby. Nobody is dying for anyone. Don’t start letting negative thoughts like that get into your head. I want all of us together for a very long time.” I kiss her lips gently as the stewardess heads towards us with the beer and chips. We thank her and begin eating our snacks. Once we’re done, Jay gets up to go and check on the children and my mother. She kisses my forehead as she stand up.
“I’ll be right back love.” I giggle and recline my chair so that I can be more comfortable. This has been a long day and I just want to relax. I start to think as I lay there. “If he comes after my family, he won’t have to worry about the cops getting a hold of him, because I’ll kill him myself. Nobody is going to take me from my family ever again, at least not without one hell of a fight.” She comes back and reclines her seat like mine, and some kind of way I manage to curl myself up around her and begin dozing off.
“I love you Renee’.” I listen to her heart beat speed up as she tells me this and mine speeds up as well.
“I love you too Jay. Nothing or no one will ever change that.” Everything goes black as my eyelids close and I drift off to sleep.
