Chapter 7 THE FIRST REPLY
Elias
The letter sat on Elias’s passenger seat like something alive.
He’d been staring at it for ten minutes now, parked in his usual spot behind the apartment building. The engine was off. The February cold crept in through the vents. His breath made clouds in the air.
The pale pink envelope looked stupid in his hands. Heart-shaped. Too vulnerable. Too honest.
He should throw it away.
Instead, he grabbed it and got out of the car.
His apartment was on the fourth floor. No elevator. By the time he reached his door, his legs burned and his fingers were numb. He dropped his keys twice trying to unlock the door.
Inside, the quiet pressed against his ears. It always did. His studio apartment was small enough that he could see everything from the doorway. Bed in the corner, unmade. Desk facing the window. Books lining every wall, organized by color because organizing by author had stopped making sense months ago.
He dropped his bag by the door. Hung up his jacket. Pulled the letter out and carried it to his desk, as it might break.
The lamp cast warm light across the paper. Made the pink look less harsh. Almost pretty.
Elias sat down and unfolded it.
Third time reading it today. He’d read it once in the department mailroom, standing there like an idiot while other TAs grabbed their mail and left. Read it again in his car before office hours, hands shaking so badly he’d had to put it down twice.
Now, at almost nine at night, he was reading it again.
To someone I’ve only seen in fragments.
The handwriting was neat but shaky. Small letters. Careful spacing. Someone who thought before they wrote.
I’ve spent three months watching the way you underline passages in books at the library, and I think you deserve to know that someone notices.
Three months. Since November. They’d been watching him since before Thanksgiving, before winter break, before he’d stopped going to the library as often because being alone in public felt worse than being alone at home.
He reads it like he’s looking for something. He hopes to find it.
Elias set the letter down. Pressed his palms against his eyes. His glasses dug into his forehead but he didn’t care.
He was looking for something. Had been looking for it in every book, every essay, every quiet hour spent pretending he had his life together. Looking for some sign that he mattered. That the person he was trying to become wasn’t just a performance.
Maybe it sounds foolish, but some nights when the campus feels too loud and I feel too small, I think about the fact that you exist somewhere under the same sky, and it helps.
“God,” Elias said to his empty apartment.
Someone thought about him on lonely nights. Found comfort in just knowing he existed. That was the kind of thing that happened in books, not real life. Not to him.
I won’t sign this. I’m not brave enough for that. But I wanted you to know that you make the world feel less lonely.
Someone who sees you
Elias read that last line three times. Four. Five.
Someone who sees you.
Not watches. Not admires. Sees.
His phone buzzed on the desk. His sister.
He almost didn’t answer. But she’d just keep calling.
“Hey,” he said.
“You sound weird.” Her voice was sharp. Knowing. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Elias.”
He sighed. Picked up the letter again, like she could see it through the phone. “Someone sent me a letter.”
“Like a love letter?”
“I don’t know what it is.”
“Read it to me.”
“No.”
“Elias Reed, read me the letter or I’m calling Mom.”
So he read it. Every word. His voice cracked on the last line.
Silence on the other end. Then, softer: “That’s really sweet.”
“It’s also kind of creepy.”
“Is it? Or are you just scared?”
“I’m not scared.”
“You’re terrified. I can hear it.” She paused. “When’s the last time someone made you feel less alone?”
Elias didn’t answer. Couldn’t.
“Did you write back?”
He looked at his laptop. At the blank document, he’d opened and closed six times today. “Not yet.”
“But you want to.”
“Maybe.”
“So write back. See what happens. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Everything, Elias thought. The worst that could happen is everything.
But he didn’t say that.
They talked for a few more minutes. Normal sibling stuff. How was work, how were their parents, would she visit before graduation? When he hung up, his apartment felt even quieter than before.
He opened his laptop.
Stared at the blank page.
The cursor blinked at him. Patient. Waiting.
He could ignore this. Pretend he never got the letter. Go back to his carefully constructed isolation where no one expected anything from him and he couldn’t disappoint anyone.
Or he could write back.
His fingers found the keys.
To my unexpected correspondent,
He stopped. Deleted it. Too formal. Too professor-like.
Started again.
I wasn’t going to respond. Convinced myself your letter was a mistake, or a joke, or something I should worry about. But I’ve read it seventeen times since Tuesday, and I keep coming back to one thing: you see me.
The words came faster now. Honest. Raw. The kind of honesty he usually kept locked away.
I don’t know who you are. I don’t know your name or your face or if we’ve ever spoken. But you see me in a way I thought was impossible. You see the searching. The hope. The quiet fear that I’m just going through motions.
His hands were shaking. He kept typing.
You asked if I’ve found what I’m looking for. The honest answer is no. I’m graduating in four months with no plan, no certainty, no idea if I’m moving toward something or running away. Most days I feel like I’m performing a life that stopped feeling real months ago.
But your letter made something feel real again.
He paused. Read what he’d written. Almost deleted all of it.
Kept going instead.
I don’t know what you want from this. If you needed to send those words into the world and you’re done now, I understand. But if you want to keep writing, I’ll keep writing back.
You said I make the world feel less lonely. I want you to know: so do you.
He stared at the screen for a long time. Then, before he could overthink it, he typed one more line.

Just his initial. Not his full name. A compromise between anonymous and known.
He printed it. Folded it. Found an envelope in his desk drawer. Addressed it with the number from the original letter.
Now it sat on his desk, sealed and ready.
All he had to do was mail it.
Elias picked it up. Put it down. Picked it up again.
Outside his window, car lights swept across the ceiling. Someone laughed on the street below. The heating system clanked and groaned.
Normal sounds. Normal night.
But Elias felt different. Cracked open in a way that should have scared him but didn’t.
He grabbed his jacket and keys.
The campus mail center would be open until ten.
