Chapter 58 ASHLEY’S ARREST

Chapter 58 ASHLEY’S ARREST
Elias
One week of silence. No messages. No threats. No Ashley.
Elias started to believe it might actually be over.
Then Tuesday morning, his phone rang. The detective.
“Mr. Reed. We arrested Ashley Mitchell this morning.”
Elias’s grip tightened on the phone. “For what?”
“Violating the restraining order. She showed up at your workplace yesterday. Security footage caught her in the lobby asking for you.”
“I didn’t see her.”
“That’s because security escorted her out before she could reach your floor. But the footage is clear. She knew she wasn’t supposed to be there.”
“What happens now?”
“She’s being arraigned this afternoon. Likely released on bail. But this gives us leverage for a stronger order. Possibly criminal charges if the DA pursues it.”
After hanging up, Elias told Alex everything.
“She came to your work?” Alex’s voice was tight. “What if security hadn’t caught her?”
“They did. That’s what matters.”
“Is it? Because she’s just going to keep trying. Bail means she’s back out there. Still angry. Still obsessed.”
“What do you want me to say? That we’re safe? We’re not. But we’re doing everything we can.”
Alex paced the apartment. His hands shaking. “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t live waiting for her to show up. To do something worse.”
“What choice do we have?”
“We could leave. Move somewhere else. Start over.”
“Alex. We have lives here. Jobs. School. We can’t just run.”
“Why not? If it means being safe?”
“Because running means she wins. She gets what she wants. Us gone. Broken. Giving up.”
Alex stopped pacing. Looked at Elias with red eyes. “Maybe I’m okay with that. Maybe I’d rather give up and be safe than keep fighting and lose you.”
“You’re not going to lose me.”
“You don’t know that. What if she escalates? What if she brings a weapon next time? What if this ends with one of us in the hospital?”
Elias crossed to him. Pulled him close. “That’s not going to happen.”
“How do you know?”
“Because we’re not going to let it. We’re going to keep fighting. Keep documenting. Keep pushing for real consequences.”
Alex buried his face in Elias’s shoulder. “I’m so tired.”
“I know. Me too.”
That afternoon, Katie called. “Ashley made bail. She’s out.”
“Already?”
“Yeah. Her parents posted it. But there’s a condition. She has to wear an ankle monitor. Can’t go within 500 feet of either of you. Or the university. Or Elias’s work.”
“Will that stop her?”
“It should. If she violates it, she goes straight to jail. No bail.”
“And if she doesn’t care? If she’s willing to go to jail?”
Katie was quiet. “Then you call 911 the second you see her. Don’t engage. Don’t try to handle it. Just call.”
Elias went back to work the next day. Jordan had increased security. Her photo was at the front desk with instructions to call the police if she showed up.
“This is insane,” Jordan said. “You shouldn’t have to work like this.”
“I know. But what choice do I have?”
“You could take a leave. Work from home until this blows over.”
“For how long? A month? Six months? Forever?”
“However long it takes.”
But Elias didn’t want to hide. Didn’t want to give Ashley that power.
He worked. Went home. Stayed alert.
Alex did the same. Classes. Library. Straight home. No detours. No coffee shops. Just the same safe route every day.
Two weeks passed. No sign of Ashley. The ankle monitor kept her away.
“Maybe it’s really over,” Alex said one night.
“Maybe.”
“You don’t believe it.”
“I want to. But I’ve thought it was over before. And it never was.”
October came. Fall colors. Cooler weather. Campus beautiful with red and gold leaves.
Alex’s senior year was halfway done. Applications for grad school spread across their dining table. Essays and transcripts and recommendation letters.
“Have you decided where you’re applying?” Elias asked.
“Here. And maybe two other schools. But I want to stay local.”
“Because of me?”
“Because I like it here. Because my life is here now.”
“What if you get in somewhere better?”
“Define better. Better program? Or better for us?”
“They’re not the same thing?”
“No. And I’m choosing us. If that’s okay.”
Elias kissed him. “That’s more than okay.”
Life started feeling normal again. Work. School. Dinner together. Movie nights. Small routines that felt like building something real.
Then on October 15th, Alex came home from class white-faced.
“She was there,” he said.
Elias’s blood went cold. “Where?”
“Outside the literature building. Just standing there. Watching. When I saw her, she smiled and walked away.”
“Did you call the police?”
“Yeah. They’re looking for her now. But Elias, she’s not wearing the monitor anymore. She cut it off.”
“What?”
“The police said it stopped transmitting this morning. They’ve been looking for her all day.”
Elias grabbed his phone. Called the detective.
“We have a warrant out for her arrest,” the detective said. “She’s violated bail. If you see her, do not approach. Call 911 immediately.”
“She was at the university. At Alex’s building.”
“How long ago?”
“Twenty minutes.”
“We’ll send units to canvas the area. But Mr. Reed? She’s escalating. Be very careful.”
They locked every door. Closed every window. Elias called building security. Explained everything.
“We’ll do extra rounds tonight,” the guard said. “If we see her, we’ll call the police immediately.”
At 10 PM, someone knocked on their door.
Both of them froze.
“Don’t answer it,” Alex whispered.
Elias looked through the peephole. His sister.
He opened the door. Katie rushed in. Her face was pale.
“Ashley called me,” Katie said. “She’s threatening to hurt herself. Says if she can’t have Carter, nobody gets to be happy. She specifically mentioned you two.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know. She wouldn’t say. But she sounded unhinged. Desperate.”
Elias called the detective again. Told her everything.
“We’re treating this as a credible threat,” the detective said. “I’m sending officers to your building. They’ll stay outside overnight. Do not leave your apartment.”
Alex was shaking. “This is never going to end.”
“It will. It has to.”
But at midnight, the building's fire alarm went off.
Loud. Piercing. Impossible to ignore.
Everyone had to evacuate. No choice. Fire code.
They grabbed their phones. Their wallets. Went into the hallway with everyone else.
Down the stairs. Out into the cold October night. The whole building stood outside in pajamas and confusion.
Fire trucks arrived. Firefighters went inside. Checked every floor.
“False alarm,” one of them announced. “Someone pulled the alarm on the third floor.”
Elias’s apartment was on the third floor.
He looked around the crowd. Searching for Ashley. For anyone who didn’t belong.
Then he saw her. Standing across the street. Just watching. Smiling.
Their eyes met.
She raised her hand. Waved.
Then turned and ran.
Elias lunged after her but Alex grabbed his arm. “Don’t. That’s what she wants.”
Police sirens in the distance. Getting closer.
But Ashley was already gone. Disappeared into the night.
And Elias knew this was far from over.
