Worth Fighting For
Emily’s POV
The room was small and intimate, yet unsettlingly foreign. The soft glow of a lamp stretched long shadows across the walls, distorting them into shapes that shifted with every flicker. The air was thick with the scent of something floral, though beneath it lingered a sadness, a heaviness that clung to the atmosphere like an oppressive fog.
The room was cluttered, with clothes, shoes, bits of jewellery scattered across the space, but my gaze inevitably landed on the portrait.
A woman’s face stared back at me.
My heart stopped.
She looked exactly like me. It was as if I were staring into a mirror, yet her eyes… those weren’t mine. Still, the resemblance was undeniable. Every feature mirrored my own.
I froze, my breath catching in my throat, my hands trembling as I reached out to touch the cold frame. The glass was smooth beneath my fingertips, chilling against my skin.
“Jason…” My voice barely broke through the stillness as I turned to him, hoping for an explanation, yet afraid of what I might hear.
Jason stood beside me, his eyes fixed on the portrait, his jaw set tight. There was something in his gaze, something distant and unreachable, that made my chest tighten with unease.
“Who is she?” My voice cracked, barely above a whisper.
He didn’t answer immediately. His gaze lingered on the portrait, and when he finally spoke, the hesitation in his voice crushed me.
“She’s… Amara. The woman I lost.”
The words hung in the air, suffocating, and I could barely breathe. My mind raced, trying to connect the dots, but the truth was too painful to grasp. I looked at the portrait again, unable to tear my eyes away from the woman who looked so much like me.
“I loved her…” Jason’s voice faltered, and I felt the weight of the confession in my bones. Each word was a jagged shard cutting through me.
Jealousy surged within me, bitter and sharp. Fear. Sadness. It all collided in a storm I couldn’t escape.
Why couldn’t I be enough?
Jason’s gaze softened as he turned back to the portrait, his eyes glazing over with memories. “Our love wasn’t supposed to happen. My father arranged our marriage, but… I fell for her. She was everything to me.” His voice trembled, as if he were unravelling at the seams. “And she gave me the most beautiful gift, our daughter, Aurora.”
I could see it clearly then. He had never truly let her go. No matter how much he tried to bury it, Amara was a part of him that couldn’t be erased.

The room, the portrait, the silence, they all spoke of her. It felt as though I were standing in the ruins of something I would never be a part of.

Jason’s voice broke the silence again. “When I found her… lying dead in front of my house, the Marinos… they took her from me. My world shattered. I didn’t want to live in a world without her.”

I couldn’t listen anymore. The words cut through me like a blade.

“But Aurora,” Jason continued, his voice breaking, “Aurora kept me going. I didn’t want to love again. I didn’t want to open myself to that kind of pain. But then you came into my life, Emily… and you destroyed everything I’d carefully built.”
I turned to him then, my heart pounding as he stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. The intensity in his eyes made my breath catch.
“Listen, sunshine,” he said softly. “I fought so hard not to have feelings for you. I did.” His voice wavered, but he pressed on. “But the more I tried, the deeper I fell for you. And it scares me. You scare me.”
He stepped closer, his gaze piercing mine. “Even though you look like her, Emily, you’re not a replacement. I don’t need one. I loved Amara. But what I feel for you… It’s different. It’s more. It’s something I’ve never felt before.”
His words echoed through me, each one settling into something I couldn’t quite decipher.
“I can tear her name from my skin if it would prove that you are the only one who has my heart,” he whispered, his voice hoarse.
I wanted to say something, anything, but his words left me breathless, stirring emotions too intense to name. The weight of it all made my body shiver with a mix of longing and pain.
“I need you to understand,” he said, his voice raw, as if each word were a battle. “You are my life, my very essence. You consume me in ways I can’t even explain, and that will never change. But I need you to see why I never wanted to dig up this part of my past. Losing Amara shattered me. I can’t even find the words to tell you how much. I didn’t want to open those wounds again, to feel that ache all over. So I buried it, from myself, from Aurora, from you, hoping I could move on. Hoping I could open my heart to someone who truly matters. To you.”
My voice trembled as I finally found the strength to speak. “Jason…”
He reached out, his hand trembling as his fingers brushed mine. “It doesn’t change the fact that I love you, Emily,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion, a mixture of fear and tenderness. “When I look at you, I don’t see her. I see you. The woman who’s made me feel things I thought I’d lost forever.”
Tears blurred my vision as the weight of his words sank in. He wasn’t replacing Amara with me. I wasn’t living in her shadow. He loves me, here and now. And that was all that mattered.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “For making you open this part of yourself that you didn’t want to. I never meant to bring up all the hurt you’ve been hiding.”
He smiled, but it was bittersweet, a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Yet there was something soft in the way it lingered, like an unspoken promise, fragile but real.
“You wanted to meet Amara,” he murmured gently, as if treading on delicate ground. “Now you have. I just hope it doesn’t change anything between us, because I can’t lose you, Emily.”
His words hung in the air, heavy with fears we had yet to face. The shadows of his past lingered in his eyes, but so did something else, a glimmer of hope. Something lighter. Something new.
And in that moment, despite the uncertainty of where this path would take us, I knew one thing for certain.
I didn’t want to walk it without him.
“I am yours, Jason Russo,” I whispered, my heart pounding in my chest.
Without thinking, I closed the distance between us and pressed my lips to his.
The kiss began soft and uncertain, as though we were both afraid of the depths we might fall into. But soon it deepened, raw and vulnerable, all the emotions we had held back finally breaking free.
In that moment, despite everything, the chaos, the pain, the scars of the past, I knew this, us, was worth fighting for.
