Chapter 8 Eight

Chapter 8 Eight
Chapter 8
THIRD PERSON POV
“Miss?” The driver called to Lily’s attention when he noticed she had been staring in the direction his boss was at, but wasn’t there anymore.
Lily blinked her eyes and turned to look at the driver.
“Yes?”
“Uhm… since my boss is currently in a long meeting, do you mind me dropping you at your home, if it’s not so far?” He suggested calmly.
“Oh, no, it’s fine. You and your boss have done enough.” Lily uttered, and then she turned to leave without hearing a word further from them.
She immediately took a cab home.
When she finally got home, she dropped her bag, walked into the bedroom, pulled off her clothes, and walked into the bathroom. She turned on the shower, and slowly started washing her body. Although she had a bad day, but at least, the driver who could have made it worse, already corrected his mistakes.
After she was done having a shower, she put on something casual and opened her laptop, then saw an unopened mail from the company. It was an official letter, noting her hire into the company. She smiled at it, then began to research more about the company, and also tried to know more about the CEO, since she was going to be his secretary, but it seemed more like the internet didn’t have pictures of him. Neither was he mentioned.
Lily continued to do other research about her post until she slept off.

~

The next morning, Lily woke up early. For a few seconds, she laid still on the bed, staring at the ceiling as reality slowly returned to her. Yesterday had been exhausting; emotionally and physically. Everything that had happened from the hospital to the mud splash, felt like a blur.

But today was different. It was her first day at work. She was meant to put the past behind and focus on a better her.

She quickly pushed herself up and walked into the bathroom. After a short shower, she stood in front of her wardrobe, thinking carefully about what to wear. This was not just any job. It was a big company, and she couldn’t afford to look unserious.

Lily picked a simple but elegant cream blouse and a fitted black skirt that stopped just above her knees. She paired it with low black heels and tied her hair into a neat ponytail. Looking at herself in the mirror, she took a deep breath.

“This is a new start,” she told herself softly.

No more crying over Kyrian, and no more hoping for what would never be.

After grabbing her bag, she left the house and took a cab straight to the company’s headquarters.

The building was tall and impressive, its glass walls reflecting the morning sunlight. Employees walked in confidently, swiping their ID cards at the entrance, but Lily felt a small wave of nervousness but stepped inside anyway. The lobby was wide and beautifully designed with marble floors and modern décor. She was still looking around when she heard a familiar voice.

“Well, look who we have here.”

Lily turned her head.

Annie stood a few steps away, arms folded tightly across her chest. Her expression was far from friendly.

Lily rolled her eyes slightly. “What do you want this morning, Annie?”

Annie smirked. “Straight to the point. I like that.”

“I’m not in the mood,” Lily replied calmly. “It’s my first day. Don’t start.”

Annie stepped closer, lowering her voice. “Now that you’re working here, you better behave yourself.”

Lily frowned. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” Annie continued coldly. “You’ll be working closely with the CEO. If you try any nasty thing here, just like the way you did with Kyrian, you’ll regret it.”

Lily’s eyes flashed with anger. “Watch your words.”

Annie shrugged carelessly. “I’m just warning you. This is not some place you can play your little games.”

Lily clenched her jaw but forced herself to remain calm. She wasn’t going to let Annie ruin her first day.

“Are you done?” Lily asked flatly.

Annie gave her one last look before turning. “Follow me. I’ll show you to your office.”

Lily sighed quietly and followed behind her.

They entered the elevator in silence. When they reached the top executive floor, Annie led her down a quiet hallway before stopping in front of a desk positioned outside a large wooden door.

“This is your office,” Annie said shortly.

It was a neat secretary’s desk with a computer, a telephone, and organized files.

Annie hissed softly before walking away without another word.

Lily shook her head. “Unbelievable,” she muttered.

She sat down slowly, placing her bag beside her chair. Her heart beat a little faster as she looked around.

This was it. Her new beginning.

“I hope this job favors me,” she prayed silently as she closed her eyes.

Meanwhile, on the rooftop of the building, Zayne stood with his hands in his pockets. The cool morning breeze brushed against his neatly styled hair as he looked down towards the parking area.

He had seen Lily earlier, and had watched as she stepped out of a cab and walked into the building.

He didn’t know why, but there was something about her that caught his attention. Maybe it was the way she carried herself despite looking fragile or it was her stubborn independence. Or it was simply because she didn’t look at him the way other women did.

After a few minutes, he turned and headed towards the exit. When he reached his floor, he walked calmly towards his office. As he approached the secretary’s desk, he noticed a familiar figure sitting there.

Lily looked up at the sound of footsteps, and the moment her eyes landed on him, she gasped.

“You?” she blurted out.

Zayne raised an eyebrow slightly.

She stared at him in disbelief. “So… you finally also got a job here?”

Zayne smiled lightly when he heard that. Apparently, she still thought he was one of the applicants. Before he could say a word, she leaned closer over her desk.

“It’s a good thing you got a job here. By the way, I have something to ask you.” She said softly.

Zayne was about to speak when his phone rang. He pulled it out and then looked back at Lily.

“First ten minutes during break, at the rooftop.” He said to her, and left.

He didn’t know why he bothered doing that, but he was just curious about what someone like her had to say. It definitely had to be worth it.
