Monsters
BEN POV
I slowly open my eyes, and the room is pitch black. The last memories come rushing back to me like floods consuming me.
It was a setup.
That woman and the baby were only there to distract me so that I could get away from the public eye.
Luring me to the bathroom was the only way to get me alone.
I already knew the person behind this attack, and it was none other than my crazy ex-boyfriend.
My throat feels dry, and I feel like the walls are closing in on me.
“Zane?” I call out in the darkness, and my voice only seems to echo in the vast room.
Shit.
I needed to keep calm for the baby’s sake; if Zane notices that I’m freaking out, it will be the end of the world, and I would never be able to forgive myself if something happened to the baby.
“Please, can we just talk?” I whisper tiredly.
Tears fill my eyes because, deep down, no one will be able to come to my rescue.
The lights suddenly turn on, and my gaze lingers around the room.
It was some sort of warehouse filled with junk and boxes.
All the windows were sealed shut, and I couldn’t even tell if it was day or night.
Where was I?
I was bound to a chair in the middle of the room, and I had no way of escaping.
There was nothing useful close to me.
I couldn’t even use my hands.
The heavy metal door suddenly opened, and Zane emerged with a smug smirk playing on his lips.
The bastard has always been overly confident.
I swallowed hard when I noticed that he had a gun in his hand.
He closed the door and turned to look at me.
“Sweetheart, I couldn’t resist your call… What do you want us to talk about?” he taunted, crossing his arms over his chest.
I frowned at him.
“Do you think you’ll get away with this? Someone will eventually realize that I never got on that plane, and they will know that something happened. It won’t be long before Ambrose shows up with the police and you’ll be locked away like the animal you are, Zane.”
He raised an eyebrow at me.
“Are you done with your little speech? Besides, no one is ever going to find you, Ben, and your sugar daddy won’t even find a trace of you, and I promise I’ll make sure of it.”
He sighed deeply.
“We wouldn’t be in this situation if you had just agreed to marry me, but no, you had to act like a saint and call off our wedding all because I cheated on you once with some girl I barely remember.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“You think I called off our wedding because you cheated on me? No, you did more than just break my heart that night because you fucking raped me and made me feel like it was my fault. For years, I blamed myself each freaking day.”
There was absolutely no remorse in his eyes.
He hasn’t changed, and he will never change.
He scoffed in annoyance.
“Come on, Ben, suck it up. I could have married any bitch I wanted, but I fucking chose you—not because I loved you and all that shit, but because my father made me do it in order to have access to your grandfather’s assets.”
It was always about the money.
The color drained from my face.
“Darling, don’t flatter yourself; you’re beautiful to other men, but truth be told, you’re not even my type, and that’s why during our relationship, I never touched you, Ben… because your existence itself made me feel repulsed, and I couldn’t fucking stand you.”
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Are you crying right now?” he mocked.
My hands were tied behind my back, and I couldn’t wipe away my tears.
Our eyes locked in a frenzy.
“If you don’t even want me, why are you bent on ruining my life? I mean nothing to you, Zane, and my grandfather’s company has nothing to offer you because it’s bankrupt.”
He rolled his eyes at me.
“Do you know what my father did to me when he learned that you called off our wedding? You’re not the only victim here, Ben. My father wasn’t some fucking saint, and he was pissed off when he saw the news… He was violent with me, and I only disappeared to undergo surgery because I was beaten up beyond recognition.”
His face became blank, and I couldn’t see any vivid emotions.
Zane was damaged, but it didn’t give him the right to continue hurting people so that he could feel better about himself or his shitty parents.
“Even when I got out of the hospital, he constantly reminded me about the money I lost… and one day, I snapped because I was filled with so much rage and pain.
I picked up a knife and looked at him like he was one of those monsters in my dreams… He kept insulting me, and I finally understood why my mother left him—because my father wasn’t human.”
“He was a demon, and so I stabbed him… until all the fire dimmed. I’ve never felt so relieved to have someone’s blood splattered all over my face.”
His eyes met mine.
“I had his blood on my hands, which meant that my father would never be able to hurt me again.”
My lips began to tremble when he started to walk toward me.
“My life wasn’t bad, Ben, but the day I met you, everything changed, and I’m only doing this to remind you how much your existence ruined my life. So, the only way to find peace is by destroying you.”
I shook my head.
“Zane… it’s not too late; please let me go, and I won’t tell the police anything.”
He looked at me like I had lost my damn mind.
“Do you honestly think I would let you go? I’m not that stupid.”
He knelt down in front of me, rubbing the gun against my cheek, making me shiver.
“Sometimes I feel like I fell in love with you, Ben… because we are not so different from one another. We are both monsters, only because we never wanted to become evil creatures, but because of our family’s influence.”
I closed my eyes as he pressed the gun against my temple, making me sob.
“Your grandfather forced you to marry a man for money… and you screwed him over by having an affair with your father-in-law.”
He burst out laughing.
I felt him wiping away my tears.
“Don’t cry… I’m not going to kill you yet.”
“Be a good girl and open your eyes for me,” he whispered.
I slowly opened my eyes.
He smiled and took out his phone.
“Let’s call that sugar daddy of yours, and maybe his son can tag along; after all, they both fucked the same woman.”
The phone was on loudspeaker, and I heard his voice.
It was Ambrose.
I sniffled softly, and Zane gestured for me to remain silent.
“If you want to see your little whore alive, come to the location I’ll send you with your son… If you involve the police, you’ll get back your darling in pieces.”
“If you hurt her, I will end you,” Ambrose warned.
Zane didn’t seem intimidated.
“We can chat all you want, dear Ambrose, but I really don’t have time, nor do I care.”
He hung up and placed the phone in his pocket.
Zane stood up.
“People are always predict
able, Ben. I know that he won’t come alone, and he’ll probably involve the police, but I have a backup plan.”
He took off his shirt, and my eyes widened in shock when I noticed a bomb strapped to his naked chest.
He winked at me.
