CHAPTER 84
CHAPTER 84
ALEC'S POV
I watched as she read something on my phone.
“Is everything okay? The toddlers?” I asked, worried.
“You have a text from someone. I don’t really understand it.” She whispered and handed me my phone.
I read the text from Mila and smiled. “It means we are going home, Carla. Now, can you give me a second? I need to make a call.”
“No.” She snapped, and I frowned, “No?”
“Make the call here. I want to hear what happened. I want to know who tried to kill us.” She proposed, and I nodded, already dialling Mila.
“Hey. Got my text?” Mila said immediately, and I exhaled, my chest expanding.
“Who did it, Mila? What … How did you get it quickly? In a matter of hours?” I asked, confused, but very grateful.
“I was already looking into it. You should be thanking me, fucker, not asking me questions.” She informed me dutifully, and I chuckled, “Thank you, Mila, but I still don’t understand. Give me a second and I’ll call you back.”
I ended the call and led Carla home. Then, I called back Mila.
“Come on, Alec. I’m busy.” She groaned, and I scoffed. She was still the same woman.
Carla took the phone from me and spoke. “Hi, Mila. I’m Carla Ivanov.”
“Oh, hello, Ms Ivanov. I know who you are.” Mila responded, humour in her voice. I watched their interaction.
“Well, I don’t know who you are, but I have a feelng that won't be the case for long. Now, can you walk me through how you were able to get this done when Alec’s team couldn’t?” Carla questioned, obviously impatient.
“Long story, but I cracked into the traffic cameras, and the Gala’s cameras too. I put two and two together. It didn’t take me long to figure out that, apart from Elizabeth McCarthy and Viktor Ivanov, there was someone else who had been watching you and Alec,” She explained easily, and I frowned, “Micah?”
“That was my first thought, too, but it wasn’t Micah. He was clean, and we know that he isn’t bold enough for that.” She scoffed.
“Then who?”
“I don’t know,” Mila responded, reluctantly.
“What do you mean you don’t know?” Carla probed, confused.
“I mean, I don’t know. I was able to get to a man, one of the connections to the shooters, through whom I found someone else, then another person and other. It is a chain that leads to a dead end. Whoever tried to attack you wasn’t really attacking you, Carla, but Alec. I have an idea of who this person might be, but I can’t be sure.” Mila disclosed, which only made us more confused.
“Mila, I don’t understand anything you just said.” Carla groaned.
“Alec, care to fill her in about the problem you have been facing in Colombia?” Mila urged.
“Ah,” I exhaled, realising that was what she meant.
“What problem?” Carla glanced at me, and I explained, “We have been facing a bit of setbacks with our shipments and goods. Initially, we thought it was someone in our circle, but we realised that someone from the outside was attacking the Mafia Families in Colombia. Every single one of us. We don’t know who it is. I have tried looking into it, but have been met by constant dead ends.”
This was a constant problem, and it was the cause of my headaches. Someone was attacking us, making a fool of us.
And worse, our informant had stopped dropping hints and information, like his mission was fulfilled and he didn't need us anymore.
We never found out who it was either.
“And you think whoever this person is, is the same person that attacked us?” Carla said slowly.
“Yes, but you have nothing to worry about. I have eliminated every loose end. You are safe, but you know there is always a loaded gun pointed at your head, Carla? Your father was the head of the Ivanov Mafia, which your Uncle is now running to the ground. You are also intertwined with Alec, which makes them scared because for the longest time, your families have been enemies, but now, this union or whatever you call it, threatens the existing status quo. There will definitely be another attack, so just be ready.” She enunciated carefully.
Irritation flared in me because she was right.
“Just to be clear – I can go home now?” Carla frowned.
“Yes, you can. The shooters and their whole network have been eliminated.” Mila said a bit too cheerfully.
“Eliminated? You killed them?” Carla questioned cautiously.
Mila was silent for a second before responding. “Yes, Carla. I killed them. What did you think I did? Made them breakfast?” She snapped, and my eyes widened, so I cut in.
“Alright, enough of whatever that is. Thank you, Mila. We need to discuss this in length, so are you sticking around this time?” I tested the water.
“Yes, I am sticking around. You owe me, remember?” She snorted, and I nodded, “Alright. See you soon, then.”
“Maybe we can get breakfast sometimes.” Carla blurted before I ended the call, and I glanced at her, wondering what she was playing at. Mila was silent, probably similarly confused.
“She will like to,” I answered and ended the call before Mila could say something insane.
“Are you ready to go home?” I smiled at Carla.
“Oh, I am so ready. I – I didn’t expect this at all. Thank you very much, Alec. I owe you everything.” She hugged me warmly, and I hugged her back, my mind wandering. I could ask for a date to settle the scores, but I knew that would only make things worse, so I kept quiet.
“Let’s get ready and surprise everyone, which reminds me, we need to get some stuff for everyone on the way. Can we make it home this night? Or should we leave in the morning?” She rambled, and I watched as she came alive, a butterfly coming out of its cocoon.
Her happiness was a shot of ecstasy. It was euphoric. I would do everything to keep her happy, even if it means going to war. I knew the next couple of months wouldn’t be easy, but I was ready to fight.
