CHAPTER 82
CHAPTER 82
ALEC'S POV
“Change of plans,” I said, looking at my brother, Luca, Viola and Bertram through the screen.
“Change of plans? If you are thinking of coming here, then don’t even. You are not walking Carla back into a warzone!” Bertram snapped, and I shook my head angrily, “Watch the way you fucking talk to me, and anything I say goes! You didn’t hold her while she fucking cried for her children. I did.”
Carla was asleep in the bedroom. She cried herself to sleep, and I was never getting that sight out of my head. It would haunt me for the rest of my life because I did this.
“I don’t like this dick, Alec, but he is right. You can’t come back until we get the situation under control.” Gabe pointed out.
“We are closing to cracking it.” Luca assured me, and I shook my head, “You are not close enough. Carla cried herself to sleep because her children were taken from her. I took her away from her children. I need this done quicker. We no longer have the luxury of time.”
I didn’t understand why they failed to crack those fuckers in the head and get what I wanted. It had been four days of failure after failure. It was looking bleak. I would have done it if I were there. Ten minutes with me would get those fuckers singing like a bird. If I were with my gadgets too, I would have narrowed it down, but none of them had the kind of expertise I did. One person did, though. Someone I hadn’t spoken to in two years. Someone who owed me a huge favour.
“So what do you suggest? You obviously have something up your sleeve.” Viola called me out.
“We need an extra pair of hands. Someone very good at torturing. Someone perfect at technology, who can crack the mainframes and get us want. We need someone very good.” I expressed.
“You are describing yourself.” Gabe frowned, confused.
“Not particularly. I have an old friend who will be perfect for the job. Her name is Mila.” I stated, my mind wandering to Mila.
“Mila? Mila Vulkov?” Bertram asked, and I nodded, “You’ve heard of her?”
“Who hasn’t? She’s fucking insane.” He spat, and I barked, “Well, we need her, and you better make her fucking comfortable. I’ll call her and get back to you. She will do what you have all failed to do.”
I ended the call before they could respond and called Mila. We hadn’t spoken in two years, but I was sure what to expect. The phone rang for almost a minute before she picked up.
“Well, hello, Playboy. How are you doing?” She responded, and I exhaled softly.
“Hello, Mila. I’m peachy. How are you?” I asked, leaning against the wall, tapping my feet impatiently.
“Oh, I’m splendid, Russo. Heard you were attacked? Guess that’s why you are calling.” She mused, but there was no bitterness in her voice.
“Yes, Mila. I need your help, and you know I will make it worth your while.” I commented, hating how desperate I was, but for Carla, I was willing to do anything.
“What do you need?” She asked, going into business mode.
“Someone shot up my car on my way back from a Charity Gala. It wasn’t just me. I had Carla Ivanov in the car with me," I heard the sharp intake of breath on the other end but I ignored it. "It was her first reintroduction into society. Luca was shot, and I lost some of my men. We are currently in a safe house, and my team are failing at cracking the shooters. I need an extra hand.” I articulated, explaining everything to her.
“I see. Have any clue who might have sent them?” She asked, and I could hear her typing away.
Normally, I would have been worried that she was trying to track me and sell me out to the highest bidder, but Mila was one of the few people I trusted.
“My guess is Viktor Ivanov, her Uncle, but we ran into Elizabeth at the Gala, and she reached out after,” I remarked, massaging my brows.
“Ah, your ex-lover came crashing, but I guess that doesn’t matter since you and Carla are cuddled up on an Island. Perhaps the bad guys do get the girl.” She mused, and I froze, because she knew where we were.
I wasn’t surprised. Mila was a demon with a laptop. She could find a fucking ant if she wanted to. She was also a thief and an assassin. She had singlehandedly done some heists that had shaken the Criminal world and beyond. She had also killed a lot of heads of state and politicians.
“You knew I’d call.” I exhaled, shaking my head in exasperation.
“Of course, but you took your time, didn’t you? Four days.” She clicked her tongue, and I scoffed, “Forgive me for not trying to crash into your life, Mila.”
“Consider yourself forgiven.” She giggled, and I rolled my eyes.
“Calm down, don’t get your panties in a twist. I have a lead I’m working on, and you should get confirmation in a couple of hours. You are going to make this worth my while, Alec, and I don’t want your money.” She inferred, and I frowned, worried about her because this was strange.
“What do you want?” I inquired, and she fell silent for a second before responding, “I’ll tell you when I see you. Keep your phone on.”
Before I could respond, she ended the call and left me with more questions than answers. Mila and I are old friends. We went to the same University in Russia. She, unlike me, wasn’t born with money, but brains. She was always the most brilliant and daring woman in the room. Of course, now, my perception has shifted ever since meeting Carla, but Mila was still something.
Oddly enough, Mila and Cara would make wonderful friends, but Mila wasn’t one to stay. She was a wanderer like Gabe. She could also be whatever we needed in this situation.
A solution.
