Chapter 40 CHAPTER 040
Linc Dmitri POV::
Amelia didn't show up yesterday. I didn't call Marcus to check. I felt she still didn't feel ready to see me yet. And then I got busy. She stayed on my mind all throughout, but I didn't reach out to find her. She needs space, I will give her space.
"Hello, boss." Marcus's voice comes on the call.
There is only so much space I can give her. I miss her. I don't mind brushing that whole situation aside if that is what she wants. It is probably just something she said without meaning to. She was in the throes of an orgasm I gave her, of course she slipped up. I can excuse it.
"Marcus. I didn't see Amelia yesterday." I say sternly. I know he told her about my request but she refused.
"Oh! I told her to see you and she left. I thought she left with you. She didn't come back after." Marcus says, sounding as puzzled as I am feeling.
"She left the firm after coming back from lunch and didn't return?" I ask just to be sure.
"Yes. All three of them actually. Ashley and Tyler. I don't know if that is why she didn't show up, but it must be connected somehow. I am sorry about that, Sir. I definitely saw her headed for the elevator."
So she was headed here and changed her mind? That seems strange and unlike her.
"Is she here currently?" I ask.
"Uh, no. Tyler is also absent which is very unlike him. But Ashley is here." Marcus says.
"You are saying Amelia didn't show up to work today after leaving during lunch yesterday?" I couldn't give a fuck less about the Tyler kid. Though I would appreciate it if he shows up to work according to schedule.
"Yes sir."
"Send Ashley up right this instant." I say and end the call before he can reply.
I call Amelia's number and it rings and rings without an answer. I don't know what to think but I feel something is off somewhere. I can't place my finger on it but the feeling is there and I can't quite shake it.
I hear a tentative knock at my door on the third time of me calling Amelia's number to no success.
"Come in." I say gruffly. My bad mood is flaring and I am not interested in reining it.
Ashley walks in, looking everywhere but at me.
"Hello, Mr. Dmitri."
Fuck. She knows. I can just tell. Though I can't really tell how much she knows about me and Amelia but I am certain she knows enough. It is obvious in the way she won't meet my eyes. The Ashley I met a while ago was bold and outspoken.
I don't know how to feel about that and I don't want to think about it right now. There is also an apprehensiveness to the way she is standing in front of me. Wringing hands and shifty eyes. Something is up with Amelia and God help me if it has to do with Tyler. I didn't like how Marcus kept going on about both of them missing from work yesterday and now today.
"Where is Amelia?" I say, cutting straight to the chase. I am not interested in anything else.
"Uh, she is at home." Ashley says, she looks like she would rather be anywhere else but in my office.
"And why is that? Is she sick?"
"Uh...no sir. She is not." She says.
"Then why is she not at work? Without a notice or anything." I am getting restless but I can't let her see it. I don't care what she knows about us, I am still Linc Dmitri, CEO of Titan's Construct to her.
"I...I don't know, sir." She stutters.
I know she is lying but I don't want to bother her anymore than I have to. She obviously has more loyalty to her friend compared to me.
"Okay, you can go." I dismiss her and she bolts out of the office like it was on fire.
Something is definitely wrong and I am going to find out what it is.
"Charlotte."
"Yes sir?" She replies immediately.
"Cancel any appointments I have today. I am going to be out of the office and I don't know when I am going to be back." I say already getting up to pick up my suit and slinging it over my shoulders.
"Okay sir."
I am already out of the office.
On my way down the elevator, I debate whether to take my car or just walk down to her apartment. It is a five minutes drive. But I could use the walk to clear my head. I feel hot and agitated. And I can't figure out why.
My decision is made for me when in my absent minded state, I end up at the parking lot. Mr. Peter hurries to open the passenger's door for me, he looks surprised that I would be going out without an aforementioned appointment but he doesn't say anything.
"Don't worry. I will drive myself." I say, moving away from the opened door. He simply hands me the keys and moves aside.
I put the car in gear without thinking much about it, the morning sunlight splashes on my face as I peel out of the underground parking space. I only have my destination in mind as I weave through the slight traffic of downtown Manhattan. I haven't seen her face in almost five days and I can't believe how much I miss it. The golden hue of her long hair. Her full rosy lips. The mischievous slant of her brows. How she looked when she is mad. At me. I miss her scent.
Fucking hell. I wonder how I managed three whole years without seeing her once. Maybe that is why I shouldn't have called her to come back. Fuck Kathryn and her fucking last wishes. Who did she think she was, asking me of that favour?
I should have turned my back on mother and daughter after what Kathryn did to me. My mind flashes to the message Arthur sent me. That is the fucking rat Kathryn cheated on me with.
I should calm down. My chest is rising and falling as I find a spot to park in front of the apartment complex Amelia stays in. A place I bought her.
I take the elevator up to her floor without any hassle at reception. I own the building. I can walk in and out whenever I wish.
"Amelia." I say when I reach her door, feeling breathless.
