Chapter 41

DEVON

Fire.

That was the first thing I saw as soon as I got off the ship I was on, a fire that was spreading more and more across the island, devouring everything in its path.

I sighed.

This had to be a joke, I knew there were people who believed that the extinction of humans was the best way, but this? Damn...

This was foolishness.

"My kind always manages to surprise me..." I smiled full of sarcasm, and when the screaming began, I found myself massaging my temples.

However, I also needed to take action and find out what was happening in that place - because it would be useful to tell Lianna, and gain something in return more easily - so I needed a disguise, one that would make it easier for me to stay at the peak of information.

"A soldier." I thought aloud as I saw those idiots running around, my body moving around the corners, reaching the place where the guards - who usually took care of humans - slept.

That place was empty because of the panic, which also made it easy to enter and grab a uniform that was my size, thus blending in with all those things - which even made me grab a bucket to get more into my role.

However, while I—pretended—to help, trying to listen to anything useful, I saw Lianna trying to get off the ship, along with about twenty brutes who were pushing each other to come and help.

"EMILY!" She shouted at some point, her eyes filled with tears, her voice surrounded by despair, "EMILY! GET OUT OF THE WAY, I NEED TO FIND HER! EMILY!" The human tried to make room with her thin and delicate arms, but at some point... she was pushed off the stairs.

DAMN IT!

NO!

I dropped everything immediately to run to her, taking off the top of that tight-fitting uniform to be able to move better in the water, and that human—as I suspected—couldn't swim.

She struggled before I reached her, until her hand was the only visible thing in the midst of that blue darkness.

She couldn't die there.

LIANNA

When I saw what was happening through the window, my eyes widened, and I couldn't believe it.

They had set the island on fire.

Emily.

Emily was there.

She was in the middle of the fire.

I got up from where I was, my hands holding my skirt to be able to run more easily, but I was pushed from side to side by soldiers coming from all directions.

What the hell!

It took me a while to get out of the ship, and as soon as I did, I started shouting my sister's name, trying to make my way through those things that took up so much space.

However, at some point, I found myself on the edge of the stairs, and with that... I was pushed into the sea.

My eyes widened.

"He... elp..." I spoke while struggling, my head doing its best to stay above water, my mouth inevitably filled with that salty liquid at some point.

God.

This had to be a joke, right?

I wasn't going to die like this, right?

In pure desperation.

In pure panic because... I didn't know how Emily was...

"SOME... BODY! HE... LP!" I tried to scream with the last breath in my lungs, only to find myself sinking in that dark, agonizing place—without air.

No...

I didn't want to die.

I didn't want...

No.

No...

"I got you." Devon pulled me out of the water out of nowhere, his strong arms holding me, and his body... was completely marked.

Devon—compared to Caleb—was slightly more delicate in terms of body structure, but... his muscles were no less than Caleb's.

His arms were marked, his chest was defined, and his abs? It was ripped.

Focus, Lianna!

His eyes are on his face!

"Th-thank you..." I stuttered like an idiot, my face finally lifting up.

"Don't thank me yet." He let out with a smile, his body carrying both of us to solid ground, his arms carrying me like a princess.

"What's going on here, soldier?" Caleb approached, his eyes shining like the flames we were behind, "why are you carrying the human?"

The revolt was clear in his pale expression, but honestly? I didn't know why he had to throw this at me, who had just been saved from drowning.

"She was drowning, sir." Devon played the part, adjusting his posture, his eyes fixed on Caleb.

"Drowning?" Caleb's face seemed to have softened, his sapphire eyes turning towards me, his body threatening to approach.

"Yes, sir. Permission to take her to the room?" Devon said before the steps of that black-haired being could come near me, "she seems tired, and still in shock."

"Yes, of course." Caleb responded promptly, his posture adjusting as he looked at Devon, "dismissed."

The redhead's body leaned in a slight bow before leaving, my head and hand resting on his chest, listening to his heartbeat, feeling that wet, transparent clothing...

It was funny.

It was extremely hilarious, how just the existence of this being could make Caleb's existence seem like nothing.

My mind wandered as I was in Devon's arms, and when I imagined what it would be like if that body was on top of me...

What?

Hold on.

No?!

Why was I thinking about that? Why was I...

My face blushed.

But at the same time... it was inevitable, Devon was handsome, and extremely hot. How could my mind not go in that direction?

So much so that my mind immediately started working on fantasies, my body starting to get hot, a warm sensation starting to build between my legs.

Damn it...

Even my breathing was starting to become heavy...

"Alright, here we are... now you can change clothes and-..."

I started to untie my corset, my eyes fixed on Devon who was looking at me with some surprise.

"Well, then I'll leave." He replied, his gaze turning away as he headed towards the door.

"Stay." I pleaded, "I need help to... take this off."

He raised one eyebrow as if questioning whether he should, only to position himself behind me, taking off my corset completely, my body turning towards him, my hands sliding down his neck, chest.

"You need to take this off too, don't you?" I questioned with a mischievous smile, "wearing wet clothes... is never a good thing."

He took off his own shirt while looking at me, his gaze becoming sharper, more intense.

I knew this wasn't something I should do, I also knew I should control myself—because this wasn't the type of relationship that was imposed here—but damn...

How?

"I didn't know you had this side, Lianna..." his voice became velvety, his lips approaching my neck, kisses being planted, his hand sliding down my leg, "is there still something else I need to discover about you?"
