Chapter 278 Cat and Mouse 34

Chapter 278 Cat and Mouse 34
Cat

Stella prowled in front of us like a cornered wild animal. Even though it was us that were pressed up against the railing.

She was wailing right now. Sobbing with fat tears falling down her cheeks but only a few minutes ago she had be screaming at us that it was all of our faults.

We had killed the man she loved. We had drowned him.

It been almost three hours since she had taken us hostage and the sun was setting and I still hadn’t heard one coherent word out of her bat shit crazy mouth.

Every now she swung her gun in an arch , and we all stiffened but for the most part we just sat, half perched on the wall and listened.

The only person who wasn’t out here was Mairi. I didn’t know where she was. I hoped she had gone for help.

But as the minutes crawled on , the less likely that seemed.

Where were the Lost Reapers? Surely by now they were missing their old ladies?

Were they searching for us?

I frowned. Well not us. I wasn’t an old lady. But surely they would be searching for them. The women around me.

“You took him from me. I gave him everything he ever wanted and he still left.”

My temper snapped. “You gave him everyone.” I stressed the last word. “He wanted. You fed him victims. Vulnerable women and girls.”

Her eyes turned toward me. Her gun arm swinging so the muzzle of the gun was pointed directly at my forehead from three foot away.

I swallowed down the fear.

“You don’t understand. I thought you would because you lost your love as well.”

“I did lose the love of my life. I lost him when he was trying to help the people he cared about. Chase and Josh are not the same.” I sneered. “Or are you talking about Wesley? You were involved with both of them weren’t you?”

Stella’s eyes darkened. “I don’t expect you to understand.”

I couldn’t help it l laughed. “You’re right I don’t, you’re a woman who purposely helped men hurt other women. You are no better than them.” I leant forward. Which was probably stupid because if she shot me now I would be dead before I hit the ground. “You’re worse.”

For a second she looked confused. “You don’t understand.” She started crying again.  “I needed to be useful. I needed him to love me and it was the only way.”

I just laughed harder. “You’re pathetic.”

That stopped her tears instantly. Her eyes narrowed on me. “You’ll regret saying that-“

“Oh spare me.” I shook my head. “Those men didn’t love you Stella. They never did. They used you. My guess would be that your husband loved you. He was in the police right? He thought you were a victim fighting against evil like he was.”

She frowned. But I knew I had gotten under her skin. And that’s what I wanted. The longer we could keep her talking the more time we had to make a plan.

And that’s what we needed right now, a plan.

“And you killed him right?” Dana asked from my left. Stella’s eyes turned from me to her but not the gun.

“He loved you and you murdered him.”

“How do you-“

Dana shrugged. “I just do. What happened? He found out that you weren’t really in a wheelchair. Have you ever.”

Stella swung the gun so suddenly that Dana didn’t even have a chance to throw her hands up to protect her face before I smashed across the cheekbone and sent her sprawling onto the floor.

Lottie dropped to her knees to help her. I remained completely motionless. We were losing her, she was spiralling. And was now even more unpredictable than ever.

“That wasn’t it.” I met her blood shot eyes. Fixed on them because over her shoulder I could see a figure in the glass door of the restaurant. Mairi was still here. She lifted her hand, a phone in it and shook her heads

Fuck, she hadn’t been able to call anyone for help. The Lost Reapers didn’t know what we were up to or where we were . All I could hope was that Daisy had told Raven.

“He would have been thrilled if you suddenly had use of your legs again wouldn’t he? Because he loved you.”

I kept my eyes on her but every now and then I flicked them towards Mairi. Shot gun in hand she quietly opened the door and stepped out. The creek of the hinges was loud and I half expected Stella to hear.

She didn’t turn. Her eyes were glued to me.

“He would have believed anything you told him. He did believe everything you told him.” I didn’t even want to think how long she had lied to him. Or how many women she had hurt.

Mairi crept forward and now Melody had spotted her as well. Her eyes widened but she understood the assignment.

We just needed to keep Stella distracted.

If Mairi could get close enough, we could overpower her.

“He found out didn’t he?” Melody straightened. “He looked too closely and realised it was you the entire time he had married a sex offender.” She spat.

“I never touched those girls-“

“Maybe not but you sure as hell didn’t help them. You make me sick.” She spat at her. Melody , an honest to god superstar spat in the face of the woman with a gun.

I didn’t know whether that was brave of stupid

“You killed him because-“ I began to say. When I heard the roar of a bike in the distance.

Stella heard it too. But the crazy smile on her face didn’t slip. “It’s not for you, I blocked all the signals. Did you really think I didn’t know the little deaf mute bitch wasn’t back there.” She whirled, her gun pointing at Mairi. “You wanna know why I killed him. Because he took Josh from me. Just like your men did. So I am going to take you from them. There won’t be anything left of you by the time they find you.”

“He was the one who told you about Josh’s body wasn’t he?” I whispered. My words were cut off by a scream and the loud pounding boom of the gun going off.

It happened in slow motion but at the same time so fast that no one had time to react. I watched horrified as Mairi crumbled.

I didn’t even think. Screaming I launched myself at Stella. Scrambling and trying to wrestle the gun out of her hands. But she was stronger than she looked.

The gun went off again, but I couldn’t look around to see if it had hit one of my friends as the force of Stella’s body slammed us backwards.

We fell over the wall together and down the cliff towards the white waves breaking on the jagged rocks below.
