Chapter 275 Cat and Mouse 31

Chapter 275 Cat and Mouse 31
Cat

Nerves gripped me so badly that I was shaking by the time I ended the call.

Two days of planning didn’t seem like long enough. It constantly felt like we hadn’t thought of everything. There was so much that could go wrong and I knew from glancing at all of their faces that we all realised it.

It felt wrong, somehow not to bring the men into our plan. They would be able to protect us. In fact they would be seriously pissed when they found out we had gone behind their backs.

But I also understood why the women crammed into my tiny space hadn’t told them. It had nothing to do with keeping secrets and more to do with doing something for themselves.

A dark cloud had been hanging over their heads for a year and for some of them it had been a lot longer. I couldn’t blame them for wanting to take matters into their own heads and finishing this once and for all.

Slowly, my hand still shaking, I placed the phone down on the counter top and sucked in a breath. “It’s done. She’s -“ i swallowed hard. “Meeting us at five.”

Mairi nodded first and for a second but not for the first time I was amazed at the way she read lips so easily. Leaning forward she pulled the pad of paper towards her again.

I’m coming.

Everyone read it and turned to her. “No.” That was from Lottie. Her eyes were wild. “You have your adoptive child now. You have a family.” She said firmly.

Dana touched Mairi's arm, drawing her attention to her. “It was already agreed ,Mairi.” She said every word clearly. “You and Daisy stay out of this. You both have children that need you.”

I stared between them completely confused. Next to me Melody leant into me. “Her and Gunner have been informally caring for one of the orphans. It’s not official but they have pretty much adopted-“

I nodded in understanding. I knew from the grapevine that Mairi was unable to have children. It didn’t surprise me that they had decided to adopt.

Mairi's lips thinned. “We all have families.” She scribbled angrily. “And I have more reason than most to want this over and done with. I might not be their only victim but I am one.”

The others sat back, unease on their faces. Then I looked at hers and realised that they were fighting a losing battle. Mairis face was set. She was coming whether we liked it or not.

I sighed. “Has anyone told Daisy?”

“I text her. She’s going to tell Raven as four forty five. That should give the guys enough time to get to us if they are all at the new club house.”

Again a flicker of surprise flowed across my face. “You guys have a new club house?”

“Somewhere was found a while ago. psych was helping-“ Lottie paused and bit her lip.  “I’m sorry.”

I waved her apology away. “I can hear his name without breaking down.” I lied as my heart spasmed in my chest. Even hearing his name was painful. I doubted it would change for a while but even if I didn’t quite like this plan. At least doing this was helping keep my mind off of things.

“Anyway.” I pushed any thought of Psych out of my head. “What’s the plan now.”

“I guess some of us go on ahead and lay in wait. I don’t want you alone up there without back up.”

Thank god for that because I didn’t want that either.

“Is anyone going to be armed?”

They shared a look. Each one of them umcomfortable.

“Do any of you know how to use a weapon?”

Lottie nodded, so did Dana which wasn’t surprising seeing as she used to be a cop. Mairi raised her hand and I blinked at her in shock.

“Gunner has been teaching me.” She scribbled on her pad.

That made sense too.

“Ok.” I nodded. “There’s a shotgun behind the bar. I guess we should take that.”

“Yeah.”

Silence fell around us, each one us lost in our own thoughts. And I knew what they were thinking because this was such a huge risk. So much could go wrong.

“What food are we bringing?” Melody asked and all eyes turned to her. I stared at her for a second and then I burst out laughing. With everyone we had to worry about that was she wanted to know.

Once I started laughing I couldn’t stop. Tears streamed down my face to drip down my chin.

It was hysterically funny.

The laughter that spilled from all of our lips eased the tension and it made me feel better.

“Ok.” I said and stood. “I guess we all have things to do before we get there.” I said firmly. “Lottie can you go and get a child car seat or pram?” God it felt good to take charge. The pram or child seat was a massive part of our plan. We needed Stella to think that Daisy and her baby were with me. After all they had been the last people she threatened.

Lottie nodded.

Mairi waved a hand in front of us, drawing her attention back to her.

“I’m going to stay here with Cat.” She scrawled. “Gunner knows when I’m lying.” Her lips twisted in a wry line. “And he’ll fuck the secret straight from me.”

We stared at her with our mouths open.

She shrugged, completely unashamed. “I know I’m weak.” She scribbled. “But at least I’m honest.”

That sent us howling again.

“Yeah.” I reached down to hug her. And she squeezed me back. “Stay with me. We can drive up together.”

Part of me wanted to demand she go back to her man, so she could be safe. Mairi had already been through so much. The scars around her lips were testament of that but I knew she wouldn’t do that and I couldn’t order a grown woman to do something she didn’t want to.

“Ok.” My shoulders moved up and down as I sucked in a breath. “Do we all know what we need to do?”

Silently they nodded.

“Then let’s get moving. I’ll see you all in,” I checked my watch. “Two hours.”

This plan might be bat shit crazy but it was going to work.
