Chapter 266 Cat and Mouse 22
Cat
He had said he loved me.
Well not quite but he had said he could fall in love with me and that frightened the hell out of me. It was all I could think about. The entire night, even when he was buried deep inside of me and my mind should have been blissfully free of all thoughts it plagued me.
He. Could. Fall. In. Love. With. ME
I couldn’t let it happen. It wasn’t the plan. This was meant to be casual. Nothing more than two adults coming together in pleasure.
And he had to go and make it weird.
It felt strange when he had held me last night. Because now it felt like it meant something more. And it felt weird this morning when he kissed me softly on the forehead and went to make coffee.
Escaping to the shower and locking the door behind me had seemed to be the only option. I needed a few minutes without his hands on me to think and I knew that if I left the door unlocked then he would follow me, and I would come apart in his arms again.
“Hey I have-“ hair wet and wrapped in a towel I swung open the bathroom door and was halfway out when I froze. I’d been practicing what I was going to say but each memorised word emptied from my head when I took in the sight before me.
There were three extra Reapers in my living room, each one with their old ladies. Each had a steaming mug of coffee in their hands and almost identical looks of shock on their faces as their eyes darted between me and Psych.
“Well this looks cozy.” Violet chuckled. His eyes finally landing on Psychs bare chest. “Did we-“
The heat that flushed up my throat to tinge my cheeks red was instant. I opened my mouth to say something but nothing came out. I knew what it looked like. With Psych in nothing but grey sweatpants hanging low on his slender hips and me in nothing but an oversized tshirt. The outline of my breasts perfectly outlined because I had been a little wet from my shower when I had thrown it on.
I looked away wildly. Had we left condom wrappers on the floor? There was nothing. Psych had clearly tidied up before they had arrived.
“Mind out of the gutter.” Playfully Psych swatted him on the arm with his closed fist. It would have knocked a weaker man backwards a few steps but Copper didn’t even flinch.
“I slept over ,remember. I wasn’t about to sleep in my clothes.” Psych said smoothly and I let out a sigh of relief. Thankful that he had a story that was believable.
“Why are you all here? At?” I glanced at the clock on the wall. “Eight am in the morning? Has something happened.”
Gratefully I accepted a coffee from Psych, jerking backwards when his fingers brushed mine. He threw me a startled look. Dark eyebrows raised in a silent question.
“We are all going to see Daisy.” Dana said softly. A knowing look on her face. “She’s allowed visitors now and-“
“Yeah.” Lottie said with a smirk towards the ex cop. Fuck, my hands shook. They knew. At the very least these two women suspected something was going on. I sent up a silent prayer that they wouldn’t say anything to out my secret.
“Wanted to see if you two wanted to come with us?” She grinned at me.
“Sure.” I shrugged, sipping my coffee and not looking at Psych. “I got them a present already, so I’ll get dressed and meet you there.”
“Or you could ride with me. Makes sense-“
I cut Psych off. “No, it's fine.” Maybe a little too quickly. I hadn’t ridden as back pack on anyone’s bike since my husband and I weren't about to start with him. It was too intimate and after what he had said last night, we couldn’t keep doing that.
I needed to put some distance between us. For both our sakes.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him frown. His eyebrows knotted together and a line appeared between them.
“You’d be safe with me. I know you have a fear of-“
I turned to him with a snarl. “There’s no fear. I just don’t want to ride with you. You’ve already taken over my house and made yourself at home .” I snapped. More angry than I should have been. I huffed out a breath. “I am more than capable of driving myself to the hospital.” I ended even more fiercely.
Psychs eyes widened a little but when he shrugged, his face was impassive. “Sure. Whatever you want. I was just offering.”
The others had fallen silent. It was Copper that broke the silence. “Well cool then, we will meet you there I guess. You coming Psych.”
Psychs eyes were still locked on mine. “I should stay with Cat. Especially now.”
“Go, I’ll be right behind you guys.”
His eyes didn’t leave my face. The others filed out, waving goodbye completely oblivious to the tension between me and Psych.
The second the door clicked shut, he reached for me. “Are you ok? What’s wrong?” His fingers brushed against the back of my hand.
I shook his hand away. “Nothing is wrong Psych.” I snapped, anger making my voice tight. “I just want a moments fucking peace and quiet. We don’t need to do everything together.” Finally I met his eyes. And they were emotionless. “We aren’t together. I am not your girlfriend.”
Something flickered into those dark eyes. Anger? Maybe but hurt as well.
“I know that.” He said in a soft whisper.
“Good.” I turned my back on him, heading towards my room to get dressed and to get a moment to catch my breath. I needed some time away from him. Just a few hours to work out what the hell had happened between us to make him think I wanted something more than casual. “I’m glad you know that because I am never going to be yours.”
