Chapter 169
Chapter 169
Lily's POV
I stood frozen, the memory of screeching tires and shattering glass flashing through my mind.
"That was months ago," I whispered.
"They haven't stopped," Ryan said, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "That's what Samuel called to tell me. They found evidence of communication. Someone has been trying to bribe the staff at the Denver villa. Specifically Emilia. They’ve been offering massive sums for access codes, for schedules."
I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. Emilia? The kind housekeeper who made me tea?
"The only reason—the only reason—nothing has happened to you in the last three months is because you have been here." Ryan gestured around the room, at the stone walls of Silver Peak. "You’ve been behind the gates of this estate. The security here is military-grade. The staff here aren't hired off an agency list; their families have worked for us for three generations. They are incorruptible."
He took a breath, his eyes pleading with me to understand. "If we go back to Denver... if we put you in a new house with new staff... I can't guarantee your safety. I can't guarantee William's safety. I can't protect you there, Lily. Not like I can here."
I sank back into the chair, my legs suddenly unable to support my weight. The world was spinning. I had thought my enemy was Eleanor, that the threat was her control, her desire to steal my child. But now Ryan was telling me there were invisible wolves waiting outside the gates, waiting for me to step out.
"So..." I struggled to find my voice. "So we stay? Indefinitely?"
"Until we neutralize the threat," Ryan said, nodding vigorously. "It’s the only logical choice. Think about it, Lily. Even the birth—if you had been in Denver when the complications started, without the specialists Grandmother had on standby here... we could have lost you. We could have lost him."
He was using my trauma against me. He was taking the most terrifying moment of my life and twisting it into a justification for my imprisonment.
"So I should be grateful?" I asked, the shock beginning to curdle into anger. "I should be grateful that I was kept in the dark? That I was manipulated into coming here?"
"I was trying to protect you!" Ryan’s voice rose, cracking with emotion. "You were pregnant! You were stressed! What was I supposed to do? Tell you that people wanted you dead?"
"Yes!" I shouted back, startling myself. "Yes, Ryan! Because it’s my life! It’s my body! I am not a child you need to shield from the monsters under the bed. I am your wife!"
"And that is exactly why you are in danger!" He shouted back, his composure shattering completely. He looked wild, desperate. "You don't get it, do you? You still think you can just be Lily Parker, the programmer. You think if you just ignore the Carter name, the danger goes away. You have no idea how ruthless these people are. If you leave this house, you are a target. William is a target."
He pointed a shaking finger at the window. "Out there, you are vulnerable. Here, you are alive. I will not let you walk out of here just to prove a point about independence, only to have to bury you a week later."
The room fell into a ringing silence. Eleanor watched us, her face unreadable, offering no comfort, no commentary. She was letting the fear do her work for her.
I looked at Ryan. I saw the love in his eyes, yes. But it was a suffocating, blinding love. A love that viewed me as a thing to be kept safe, a treasure to be locked in a vault, rather than a partner to stand beside. He was paralyzed by the fear of losing me, so much so that he was willing to erase me to keep me.
A strange, cold calm washed over me. It was the clarity of absolute zero.
I stood up slowly. I smoothed my shirt. I looked at the man I had loved since college, the man I had married in secret, the man I had thought was finally seeing me.
"You're right," I said softly.
Ryan slumped, relief flooding his features. "Thank God. Lily, I promise, we will make it work here. We can fix up the East Wing, we can—"
"You're right about the danger," I interrupted, my voice steady and devoid of emotion. "The danger exists because of who I am to you."
Ryan frowned, confusion clouding his eyes. "What?"
"The target isn't Lily Parker," I said. "The target is Mrs. Ryan Carter. The target is the mother of the heir. That is the person they want to hurt. That is the person who needs military-grade security and a fortress to survive."
I turned to look at Eleanor. She was watching me intently now, her eyes narrowed. She understood. She saw where the logic led before Ryan did.
"I didn't sign up for a life where I have to be locked away to stay alive," I said, turning back to Ryan. "I didn't sign up to be a liability you have to manage. I love you, Ryan. God knows I love you. But I cannot live as a prisoner of your fear."
"Lily, please," Ryan stepped forward, reaching for me. "It’s temporary. Just until—"
"It’s never temporary with your family," I said, stepping back out of his reach. "There will always be a threat. There will always be a competitor, or a scandal, or a reason why I need to be hidden, managed, or controlled. I am done."
"What are you saying?" Ryan’s voice was a whisper.
I took a deep breath. The air in the room felt thin, sharp.
"I am saying that I am not the one in a dangerous position," I said clearly. "Your wife is."
Ryan froze. "Lily?"
"I want a divorce."
The words hung in the air, heavier than the portraits, colder than the stone walls.
Ryan’s face went white, as if I had physically struck him. "No. No, you don't mean that. You're upset. You're scared."
"I have never been more clear," I said. "If I am not your wife, I am not a target. If I am not a Carter, I don't need your grandmother's protection. The competitors won't care about a single mother living in a condo in Denver if she has no tie to the Carter empire."
"You can't," Ryan choked out. "William..."
"William is your son," I said, feeling tears prick my eyes but refusing to let them fall. "He will always be your son. But I will not be a casualty of your legacy. I will not let you lock me in a tower because you're too afraid to let me live in the world."
I looked at Eleanor. "You wanted the heir safe? You wanted the problem of the 'unsuitable wife' solved? Congratulations, Eleanor. You get both."
I turned and walked toward the door. My legs felt like lead, my heart felt like it was being ripped out of my chest with rusted hooks, but I didn't stop.
"Lily!" Ryan screamed my name, a sound of pure devastation.
I put my hand on the doorknob. "I'll be in the suite packing my things. I expect the legal team can draw up the papers by the end of the day. After all, you're very efficient at handling liabilities."
