Chapter 30

“Charlie’s dead,” yelled Bernie as he came rushing into the hotel room in Odessa.

“What?” said Phillip seated in a bath tub in the middle of the floor. Bernie shoved the newspaper under his nose and pointed to the article.

Choctaw Charlie a Half Breed Indian of Louisiana shot and killed the Sheriff of Laredo and seconds later he in turn was gunned down by an unidentified lone Gunman. The scene of the shooting took place in the office of the Sheriff of Laredo as he was trying to arrest Choctaw Charlie on a charge of murder which took place in East Texas. The lone gunman was dressed in black and carried a very fancy revolver. He rode out of town before anyone could get his name. The Texas Rangers are looking into the matter.

“I don’t believe it,” roared Phillip as he stood to get out of the tub. Bernie handed him a bath towel which he ignored. “This is outrageous,” he yelled as he began to pace the floor. Bernie kept trying to give him the towel. “How long are the authorities going to allow this murderer to roam free?”

“You need this, Phil,” begged Bernie holding out the towel.

“What I need is to get my hand’s on Christopher Le Monte . . . that’s what I need, and don’t call me Phil.” He started to open the door to the hall way.

“Stop,” shouted Bernie.

“What on earth for?” asked Phillip annoyed with his brother.

“For this,” he held up the towel once more “and your cloths,” he explained.

Phillip looked down, suddenly he realized he was dressed only in his . . . birthday suite. He went quickly to the tub and climbed back into the water. “This bath cost me two dollars so I better get my money’s worth out of it.”

“Right, Phil,” said Bernie with a sigh.

“And don’t call me Phil,” he demanded loudly.
