Chapter 44 Hey Buddy
Chapter 44 Hey Buddy
"She will be fine, Mr. Queen," the doctor assured as he reached for his bag. "All she needs to do is rest a little and take her medications, and she will be fine."
"Thank you very much, Doctor Hariton." Ezra's gaze was drawn to the bed, where Heather was sound asleep, wrapped in blankets. When he woke up for work this morning, the rain had already stopped, and it bothered him that Heather had never texted or left a note showing that she had already left. He made the decision to call her, but he heard her phone ring from the room he had assigned to her.
He was perplexed. It was already after seven a.m., and she had not left yet? Or did she leave her phone at home? Before entering her room, he knocked on the door first. He did not hear any response, so he went in, and he was surprised to see her there. He approached the curtain and pulled it up, allowing the morning light to enter the room, but all he could hear was a hum.
He walked over to her bed. “Heather,” He called, but all she did was hum, which bothered him, and he checked her temperature. It was burning. Then he took out his phone and dialled his family doctor's number. He also informed Milan that he would be unable to stop by, and that she should inform Miss Facer of this after her shoot.
He wondered how the shoot would go without him.
"I will see you to the door." Dr. Hariton trailed behind Ezra as they approached the elevator. “Ah. Also, do not tell my parents about anything."
"Certainly, Mr. Queen."
Ezra watched Dr. Hariton exited the elevator and returned to the room. He walked in and saw Heather already seated, her back rested on the board. "You should not put yourself through that. You should be lying down."
Heather shifted her gaze to him. "I am so sorry for causing you so much trouble with my sudden illness." He could see how pale her face was.
"How did you get sick all of a sudden? I am not going to say that cut made you sick because it was not even deep."
"I was not lying when I said the rain beat me on my way here last night."
He fixed his gaze on her, as if he were trying to figure out if she was lying, but she appeared too sick to be lying. Perhaps the rain had really made her sick. He exhaled heavily. "You are welcome to stay here until you feel better."
"Of course not. I do not want to disturb your peace."
He coughed and spoke under his breath. “You have already done that.”
“Did you say something?”
“No. No. It is all right. You can stay here until you feel better, and until then, I will have to keep an eye on you and make sure you take your medication to get better faster." So you can leave. He finished to himself.
“Ezra. I don’t think you should stay here with me and skip work.”
“Oh. That is not something I intend to do."
"So, what did you mean by keeping an eye on me?"
"I planned to hire people to do that for you. Take care of your needs and everything."
“Oh.” Heather's expression shifted.
"Do not get me wrong. I missed work today, and heaven knows how much money I have lost. Anyways…” He looked down at his wristwatch and turned his face toward her. "I need to get out of these clothes and call the people who will look after you. In the meantime, I am hoping you can keep up."
Heather simply nodded. "I am going to be fine." What is the point if she cannot even persuade him to stay by her side when she is sick? She sat there watching Ezra walk to the door. Once he was gone, she took out her phone and dialled Scott's number.
“Hey, Hills. What is the matter?” He had the voice of someone who had just been awakened by his phone.
“Hills? Really? Did I wake you up?”
"Sort of. What is going on? Your voice sounds weak.”
"Thank you for noticing, but I am sick with a cold. Do not be worried; I will be fine."
“Alright. If you say so. Where are you at? Home? The hospital? Let me know so I can have someone bring soup for ya.”
"You do not have to do that, Scott. I am already receiving care.”
After a few moments of silence, Scott spoke again. “What? You do not have any smart friends to look after you, and your mother is occupied. Your dad is at the hospital, so make things clear.”
Heather scoffed. “Don’t be rude with your words.”
“Am I wrong? You do not have any smart friends. I am literally the only young and hot man in your life.”
“You are wrong. I have smart friends.”
“Since when?”
"Ezra is one of my friends. He is smart." Scott began to laugh in response to her words. “It is true.”
“Since when did he become your friend?”
“Since last night.”
Scott sighed over the phone. “Heather, I told you to take things slowly with him, and he will come around, and in the meantime, you and I should…you know…get involved and keep doing what we do. You serve me yourself, and I make you feel the best you have ever felt.”
Heather rolled her eyes. "I am at his house right now, Scott. I even spent the night there."
“What? That is not possible. Ezra would not have just anyone there."
“I am not just anyone. I was the love of his life.”
"Until you betrayed him with me. Which you continue to do."
“Scott. Stop babbling nonsense. You and I are just passing the time until I can get Ezra back."
Scott could not stop himself from laughing. “Alright. I do not mind playing second fiddle. This is my preferred role. It is forbidden, and that is what keeps you coming back for more, and you will keep coming back even if you and Ezra end up together. Heather, you need me. I am the ying to your yang.”
Heather made a frustrated face in response to his words. Where did he pick up those phrases? “I will call you later. You are starting to irritate me."
"How about I drop by? We can all catch up."
"Do not even think about coming here, Scott."
“I am coming.”
Suddenly she heard a beep. She became perplexed. “Scott. Scott.” She yanked the phone out of her ear and dropped it on the mattress. “Damn it!”
Meanwhile, Ezra ended the call and sighed as he set his phone down on the table. He took off his clothes, opened his wardrobe and reached for a more comfortable cloth to wear.
As he approached his bed, his thoughts turned to Emma. Would she be alright? Would she be okay without him? He would not have been in front of her during the shoot if he had gone to work, but he could not help but think about how difficult a time she must be having by now.
Milan had just called to tell him how the camera crew had set up the cameras and that the shoot was about to begin. Instead of asking about Emma, he asked about all of them at once so Milan would not have to think about it, and also questioned him about why he was concerned about Emma.
He sat on the bed and he was restless. He did not have anything to do. He got to his feet and reached for his phone. She was in the middle of a shoot, so he could not call her. He was also unable to leave the house because he could not leave Heather alone in his home. Then something occurred to him, and he groaned. Emma would be furious if he paid a visit to Zoe while the public was watching.
He was only used to going to work in the morning and returning at night. Every day, except Wednesdays and Fridays, when he goes to the hotel to see Scott or has his own alone time on Saturdays. He was getting bored, and it was killing him.
As he turned his phone back on and scrolled through his contact list, his finger came to a halt on Scott's name. His friend would lift his spirits. They could even drink while they talk. But Heather's presence was going to make things awkward. Scott was completely unaware that she was in his house. Ezra felt it was unnecessary to inform him because nothing was going on between him and Heather.
He shook his head and skipped Scott's name. He smiled as his hand paused on the next name. "She will do." He then tapped it and held it up to his ear.
After a ring, the phone was picked up, and Winter's voice reached his ear. "Why are you calling, brother? This is so unlike you. Are you sick or something? Is this some kind of emergency? Should I call mom?”
"I am alright, Winter."
"It does not appear to be so."
"And what makes you think that?"
"It is 11 a.m. and you are calling. You don’t like being disturbed when you are at work. And you are calling my cell. Should I go on?”
"I just do not think it is a big deal to talk to my sister."
“Really?”
“Yes, really.”
“Oh, brother. I think I know what this is.”
Ezra's brow furrowed. “No, you don’t.”
“This is about Emma, isn’t it?”
"What exactly are you yemming about?" He was really curious and hoped his sister hadn't done something stupid again.
"Don't you want me to play a prank on her, to get her to come to you? Wasn't that the reason you called me?”
“No. It isn’t.” Except that I am incredibly bored, and you are the only person I can talk to. He sighed. “No. It isn’t. I was just checking in on you."
"Are you sure you are okay?"
“Yes. Winter, I am doing fine." The house alarm that beeped drew Ezra's attention. “I will call you back. Someone is inside my house."
“Are y—”
He hung up. He got to his feet and took his phone with him. Perhaps it was the caretakers he had called earlier to look after Heather. He heard his name as he approached the door, and the voice was familiar.
When he walked down the stairs and into the living room, he was surprised to see Scott seated on the couch. "Hey buddy," Scott said with a smirk as he looked up at him. His hand waved to Ezra.
“What are you doing here?”
“What do you mean?” He leaned back on the sofa. "Is it a crime to pay a visit to my best friend?"
