Chapter 86 DON’T SCARE ME AGAIN
Chapter 86 DON’T SCARE ME AGAIN
Kennedie
I stared at the screen, my reflection faintly visible in the glass. My entire body could not even move, paralyzed with terror.
Behind me, the emergency room doors finally opened.
The doctor walked out and I held my breath, scared that if I even did the wrong thing, my sanity….. Not just that, everything would come crashing down.
“How is he?” I asked my voice low.
The doctor smiled “he is stable now, but still unconscious”
“Can… please can I see him?” I asked and the doctor nodded “yes you may, but be careful not to overwhelm him”
I nodded my head “will do, thank you”
I entered inside the room and closed the door behind me with a soft click, and there he was.
He just lay still on the hospital bed. He looked so vulnerable with all of those wires and tubes that trailed after him. At least he was breathing just fine. I tried to console myself with that as I observed his chest rise and fall steadily.
Not that it even did much, my chest still felt so freaking tight as I looked at him.
I took a few slow steps forward, my legs trembling. It was like my legs had forgotten had to move, or it was in fact that damn concussion that the nurse was warning me about.
But none of that even mattered.
It was just that Desmond like this, it felt so wrong.
I had never seen him weak, he was always my pillar protecting me form everything even when trouble just seemed to follow me like a dark cloud.
I pulled the chair closer and sat beside him, my fingers hovering above his hand for a second before I finally gathered the courage to touch him, wrapping his palm in the both of my palms.
He felt so warm.
Thank God, he was warm.
The moment my fingers wrapped around his, the tears came. At first it was just the silent tears with the soft rocking of my shoulders and soon I could no longer control it. It turned into those fucking ugly sobs with hiccups.
My tears trickled down and dropped onto the bed sheets like soft rain.
“Why did you do that huh?” I whispered, my voice cracking, “You idiot, do you think that you are invisible?”
My thumb brushed over his knuckles, memorizing the feel of him. He was like a feather right now, one wrong touch and he could just disappear.
“You don’t have to throw your life away for me Desmond… how am I going to live without you?”
My chest hurt, so much that it was even painful to breathe.
“I am right here Desmond and I am terrified that you will not be ok”
I leaned forward, resting my forehead against the edge of the bed, my grip tightening on his hand. My tears soaked into the sheets now, and I didn’t even care.
“I can’t lose you Desmond, not when you’ve made me fall-”
My voice faltered.
I lifted my head slowly, studying his face.
Even in his unconscious state, with all the bruises that covered him form the accident, it was so unfair that he still looked this good.
“I don’t want you to protect me I it means that you will hurt yourself for me” I sniffed.
My fingers trembled where they held his.
“You have to come back to me Desmond please” I said.
I swallowed hard, my heart pounding.
“I think that I’m falling for you,” I confessed quietly, the words slipping out before I could stop them. “This is so fucked up”
I squeezed his hands tighter “so I need you to open your eyes, okay? You don’t get to do something like that and then just leave me here alone with it.”
My lips pressed together as another wave of tears blurred my vision.
“So please,” I whispered, my voice breaking completely now. “Open your eyes.”
There was a long second and nothing happened.
Then his fingers twitched in mine.
I froze.
I gasped loudly, my eyes widening as is eyelids fluttered, once, twice, before slowly lifting. His gaze was unfocused at first, cloudy with sleep and pain. Then his eyes settled on me.
“Princess,” he rasped.
“Wait let me go get the doctor” I said quickly and stood up but he held my hand “please baby… stay”
A sob tore out of me before I could stop it.
“You fucking idiot,” I cried, and before I could even think about what I was doing, I smacked his chest.
Not so hard, but enough for him to feel it.
“Ouch,” he groaned immediately, wincing. “I just woke up and you seriously want to send me back?”
I laughed and cried at the same time. “This is not fucking funny,” I said, hitting his chest again, lighter this time. “Don’t ever do anything like that again.”
He shifted slightly, his grip tightening around my hand despite the obvious discomfort. “I missed you,” he said softly, his voice still rough. “Give me a kiss.”
I pulled back instantly, glaring at him through watery eyes. “I am serious, Desmond.”
He nodded, his expression sobering. “I know.”
“I can’t be here without you Desmond- fuck! I just can’t” the tears were back again.
He brought his hands to my face and wiped the tears from my eyes “please Princess, give me a kiss”
I hesitated, would I hurt him if I did?
He rolled his eyes and brought my face closer to his own before he placed his lips on mine. It was soft, careful but it still packed so much feeling.
“You’re impossible,” I muttered, resting my forehead on his.
“There,” he murmured. “Worth it.”
I smacked his chest again, ignoring his hiss. “Don’t scare me like this again” I said.
He nodded “I promise Princess, I am not going anywhere”
I hugged him “I missed you” I said.
And I know it was weird that he was the one hurt but here he was still comforting me. He rubbed my back slowly “I am fine babe”
I closed my eyes and just focused on the comfort that he was bringing me.
The stalker, Andrea… every other thing.
I would think about it all later.
