Jasper’s expression shifted when he saw the incoming call. He turned away to answer it.
“Still up?”
“Jasper, my chest is killing me. What if I have some incurable disease? I’m so scared. Can you take me to the hospital for
tests?” Chloe’s voice was frantic on the other end.
Jasper hesitated, glancing back at Allison standing there waiting.
He’d come here specifically to celebrate Allison’s birthday with her, but Chloe’s health scare couldn’t wait.
“I’ll be right there.”
After hanging up, he walked over to Allison. “Chloe’s not feeling well. I need to check on her first. Get some rest, and I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”
Without another word, he pulled open the car door and got in.
The driver quickly handed the cake to Allison before rushing to start the engine.
The car sped away and disappeared from sight in seconds.

She’d thought that if Jasper really wanted to give her a proper birthday celebration, she could treat it as one last meaningful moment together before she left.
But all it took was one phone call from Chloe, and Jasper abandoned her again.
Even though the candles on her cake were still burning.
Here she was, standing alone in the darkness outside her dorm building, clutching a birthday cake with nowhere to go.
Allison watched the candle flames flicker in the wind and made a quiet wish.
“I hope I never fall in love with Jasper again in this lifetime.”
After that, Allison tossed the cake into a nearby trash can, along with the expensive necklace.
She had just settled into bed when her phone buzzed.
The message contained a selfie of Chloe nestled in a man’s arms. She couldn’t see the man’s face, but Allison recognized Jasper immediately.
Chloe: [So what if he helped you celebrate your birthday? Look, whenever I want him, Jasper comes running right back to me.]
Allison lay on her back, staring at the ceiling. While Jasper was with Chloe, she endured the remaining hour alone.
When the clock struck midnight, she marked an X on the sixth

of her countdown with a permanent marker,. Then, she finally let herself sleep.
At first, Allison had actually worried that Jasper might show up to get her. She’d racked her brain thinking of excuses to turn him down.
But three days passed without any sign of him. Of course, with Chloe by his side, he’d obviously forgotten whatever promises he’d made.
Since Allison hadn’t picked up her birthday gift from her adoptive parents and had skipped her usual Saturday visit, they called Sunday morning asking her to come for dinner.
She didn’t refuse.
If she was really going to leave Los Angeles, she owed them an explanation.
She’d always made these weekly visits with Jasper in tow, but this time, she went alone,
Melissa sat gracefully on the sofa, every inch the picture of elegance.
“I heard you’re living at school now?”
“I’m older now. I should learn to be independent,” Allison replied.
“I know you’re angry with your brother. I saw that woman at 3our grandpa’s birthday party. She has zero class. There’s n60:56

most foolish approach. It only pushes him further away. Stay calm and patient. Eventually, Jasper will realize who’s truly right for him.”
“Who he wants to be with isn’t something I can decide anymore,” Allison said simply.
“Has something else happened?” Melissa sensed something was off in her tone.
Even if Jasper had fallen for another woman, given how deeply Allison cared for him, she would have done everything in her power to ruin it.
In the past, whenever Jasper got close to any woman, Allison would cry and throw tantrums until she drove the woman away.
But now, she seemed strangely calm about it all.
