I'm Sorry.
I'm Sorry.
Landon
The air in my father’s office used to smell of cedar and whiskey. Now it reeked of me....of anger, of sweat, of everything that broke too easily. The bookshelves were bare where I’d torn them apart. The desk was cracked from my claws. I hadn’t left the room in two days, maybe three. I didn’t care.
They had failed me again. Every wolf I’d sent to the mountain. Dead, lost, or worse. Kane’s wards held. The bastard thought he could keep her locked behind it, as if she belonged there.
I dragged a hand through my hair, pacing, the sound of my boots grinding over glass. I’d smashed the window hours ago for air, but the cold did nothing to clear my head. Every thought came too loud. Every breath came with her name buried in it.
Amelia.
She’s will be ours again.
“She was never his,” I muttered. “She was never meant to be his.”
No.
The voice slid through the edges of my mind, a whisper I’d long since stopped trying to deny. It wasn’t separate anymore. It didn’t shout. It didn’t argue. It was just there, threaded through my own voice like shadow through smoke.
You saw what she was before anyone else. You built her. You gave her purpose.
“I did.”
You tried to protect her.
“I did.”
He stole her. He hid her away.
My jaw tightened.
A little spark waiting for someone to fan her flame.
I closed my eyes, breathing shallowly. “And now?”
Now she burns brighter. He feeds her fire.
My hand clenched at my side. “We will take her back.”
Yes.
“I just need to get to her.”
Yes.
“She’ll come to me,” I murmured. “When the mountain falls. When the wards break.”
She will. She’ll see you as you are. Not the broken man they made you. The Alpha you were meant to be. Little Spark will return to us.
I let out a ragged laugh.
“She’s mine,” I whispered.
The voice purred approval.
“She’s mine,” I said again, louder this time.
The sound that answered me wasn’t my own voice, but it echoed perfectly when I laughed.
