Chapter 99 When It Hurts
Kristen's POV
The tears that I was expecting didn't rain down my cheeks. Not even a single drop. Even as I have tried to force them out.
It's surprising how my eyes are still dry, yet my heart is bleeding.
Why wouldn't it?
There's this gaping hole violently boring through my chest and paving through my heart.
After everything I went through with Calhoun, he still chose to cheat
on me.
It's amusing, isn't it? That men aren't to be trusted, they tell you
one thing and they go behind your back to do the opposite. In fact, they sweet-talk all the women they're having affairs with, to make them believe they're being truthful.
The promises, everything else he's ever told me, he meant none of them. This tall brunette has always been there.
She's everything I am not. And how she confidently sent me the video of a sleeping naked Calhoun, shows that she's always wanted to do this for some time now.
The way she said, 'Our man.'
And then she was naked. Before showing me a naked Calhoun on the bed. It's glaring that they had sex right before the brunette made that video.
Who would have thought someone like Calhoun could ever cheat on me? It's way too insane to even think about it. I mean, he's always been so brazen with his love for me. Stood up for me when I was getting humiliated.
Karma is a payback bitch after all.
This must be how Mom felt when she figured that Calhoun was cheating on her with me.
"Kristen, we should get going already," Dad puts his hand on my shoulder as he sits next to me.
I am too stunned by the video to even utter a word to him. I haven't spoken to anyone in five hours. So they don't even know what's going on with me.
When I fell earlier, Dad was scared. He helped me up and went to calm Janette. Together, they kept questioning me and asking me if I was okay. Still, I couldn't utter a word to them. And so, we've been here since then, and it's already dark.
"Don't tell me you want to spend the night here, Calhoun would not allow that," Dad continues as he looks at me with worry.
If only he knows the amount of pain that name gives me. "Kristen?"
"You should go, I'll stay," my voice is rough and shaky when I let this out. It's as if I am learning how to talk.
"How can you even say that?" Dad scoffs incredulously.
"You need to tell me what's bothering you, and why you've refused to leave this place." He looks at me with all seriousness this time.
"It's my place after all," I look away from him.
"What did you see, Kristen?" It seems as though he's not willing to drop this either.
"Nothing." I bite out.
"There's been a huge change in your mood," From my side glance, I can see him observing me through a squint.
"Kristen!" My heart thuds in my chest when I hear the familiar voice of Calhoun. He's here.
"I knew he would come find you," Dad gives me a small smile.
Curling my fingers into tight hard fists, I clench my jaw because I am starting to feel these destructive emotions once again.
My bedroom door jerks open and a panting Calhoun storms in.
"Kristen..." his steps falter when he sees me. And his mouth parts, closes before reopening.
"Kristen..." The fact that he's calling my name so audibly as if he did nothing, struck more sadness in me.
And the tears which refused to come, arrived in a rush. They stream down my cheeks and the only thing I can do right now is to let out quick breaths to breathe properly.
"Are you okay?" Calhoun nears my side and goes down on his knees in front of me.
I shudder when he puts his hands on top of my thighs and searches my face.
"Shit, why is she in tears? What did you say to her?" He hisses at my father.
"Nothing, Alpha Calhoun," Dad responds with a confused frown on his face.
"Then why is she crying?" Continued Calhoun.
"She was moody but didn't shed a single drop of tear until she heard your voice," Dad provides as he leaves the seat, so as to give Calhoun
space near me.
"Kristen..." Calhoun wipes the tears off my cheeks with his hands, but it's futile because they gush out even more.
"Tell me why you're upset," He dares look at me with affection. When he was inside another woman just a few hours earlier. The more I think about it, the more my heart clenches in my chest.
It's taking everything in me to stay silent and just cry because if I start talking, I'll be throwing a tantrum and smashing things.
"Please tell me why you're in tears," Calhoun implores or maybe he's pretending. He even puts my hand on his cheek and presses a
quick kiss on my open palm.
It's insane how he still affects me this much after I found out the
truth about him.
"You're starting to get me worried, Kristen," He rasps out, "Is it your pregnancy hormones or you're just mad at me because I unknowingly did something to upset you?"
Upon holding my breath, I jerk my finger at my bag on top of the
dressing mirror's table.
"You want me to get it for you?" Calhoun innocently asks, and
slowly, I nod.
"Fine, I'll get it for you," he leaves my side and returns a few seconds later with the bag.
My hand is wavering when I put it inside and fish out the phone.
Calhoun has this puzzled look on his face when I unlock the phone and shove it in his hand.
He holds my gaze for a few seconds before clicking the play button
on the screen.
Thirty seconds passed, and I can see Calhoun's veins bulging out
along his neck. Even his eyes are growing wide in their sockets as if he just saw a ghost.
"Kristen..." my name comes out ragged from his mouth.
