Chapter 119 Caught In The Enemy's Web Or Not
Calhoun's POV
"Kristen," I pause from the game of chess I am playing with her father, to stare at my beta who just made his presence known.
"She's not yet back from the outing she went with her friends," Bruce informs me.
And a frown hits my face as I stare at my wristwatch. It's 9:15 PM.
"It's late already and she's not one to stay out till this time," now, I don't want to think Kristen was persuaded by her friends to go drinking with them. Maddy and Sapphire are wild wild girls, one was having a threesome with two men and the other was at the club, drunk as fuck and dancing in the midst of men.
Stopping Kristen from being friends with them is out of the picture because she's known them like since forever. But I still need to caution her on how to be around them. She went on an outing with them the other day, only to get kidnapped and traumatized by Jack the Rogue Psycho.
"Let me go find her," Bruce volunteers, upon sensing my worry.
"I'll do that instead, she's my daughter after all," Stewart rises from the chair he's seated opposite me.
Bruce and I exchange a look but we don't say a word.
Stewart is trying so hard to fit into Kristen's life, after being away for twenty-one years. So I ought to let him. He should be the worried father, after all, I'm sure Kristen will appreciate it.
"Stay back Bruce and let him go," I direct this to Bruce.
"Are you sure, Alpha Calhoun?" My beta raises a brow at me as if he's unsure of my command.
"Why, yes. He's Kristen's father after all. I can't stop him from going to find his daughter," I point out the obvious. And I don't fail to see how the look of relief settles on Stewart's face.
"Alright, as you wish," Bruce nods at me.
And I watch Stewart until he's finally out in search of his daughter.
More than three hours passed, and there's still no sign of Kristen or her father.
At this point, I know I cannot stay put anymore.
"Bruce," I call the attention of my beta and he quickly hurries to my side.
"Let's go find my mate," I am almost out of breath as I give this order.
It feels like deja Vu that I am going in search of Kristen again.
Seven days ago, we separated from each other because she wanted space from me, only for me to head back to her school apartment and get informed by Stewart that she ran away.
And then, I began my search for my mate. Going to her friends and even dropping by at Natalie's.
Bruce told me earlier on that she was with her friends and when Stewart volunteered to go get her, I couldn't stop him. Because I wanted both father and daughter to bond. Only for Stewart to not
return.
Worry is getting the best of me. It's impossible to think straight when I haven't seen my pregnant mate in twelve hours.
"Wait a minute, what if Stewart is trying to hurt Kristen and this was all his plan?" I stop Bruce when he is near Sapphire's door.
"Don't overthink too much, Calhoun. I don't see that guy as a threat anymore." Bruce shoots me a look.
"Anything can happen," I tell him.
"Just calm down, Calhoun..it might be that Kristen is spending the night at her friend's," Bruce pats my shoulder, reassuring me that nothing has happened to my mate. But why do I still feel something isn't right?
"Why didn't Stewart return to inform me?" I almost glare at him.
"Maybe she told him she would call you, forgot to do it, and slept off. Do you know how hard it is for pregnant she wolves these days? They quickly fall asleep," Bruce states and I don't know if he has any idea of what he's saying since he hasn't been around any pregnant woman before, save for Kristen.
"Her phone is switched off, I've been trying it for the past four hours, "I sigh.
"Maybe her battery is down," Bruce says.
"I want to think you're right, Bruce," I thin my lips as I stare at him.
"Just don't make any assumption until you hear from her friends,"
he continues.
And upon knocking on the door, Sapphire comes out.
"Is Kristen here?" I go straight to the point.
"Alpha Calhoun, why are you here at such an ungodly hour," she
seems a bit sleepy. And I can feel my heart swelling in my chest, upon registering that Kristen isn't here.
"Hurry and speak up!" I order.
"She left us at 5 pm," Sapphire speaks quickly as if she's afraid of me.
"Where did she go?" I ask.
"Natalie showed up unexpectedly and offered to take just Kristen out, "she replies.
"What?" My eyes are growing large already.
"It's true, Alpha Calhoun. She left with her mother, after assuring us
things were alright," Sapphire concludes.
Upon clenching my jaw, I turn away from Sapphire.
"What's on your mind?" Bruce is walking really fast to keep up with
me.
"Something is obviously wrong," I manage to reply. My mind is
already clouded with the awful thoughts of my ex-wife torturing my
pregnant mate.
"You think Natalie would hurt Kristen?" Bruce narrows his eyes in
their sockets as he stares at me.
"I know so, she wants to get back with me," I state, upon
remembering how Natalie acted five days ago.
"How sure are you? The last time I saw her, she was being all affectionate towards Kristen." Bruce stares at me as if I am being too
much.
"That was five months ago and she was faking things," I point out, raking my hand through my hair as I blow out calm breaths so I won't panic. But it's not helping. Kristen is with Natalie.
"You might be wrong," Bruce shrugs nonchalantly as if I am taking
things too far.
"Just shut up, Bruce!" I snap, already infuriated to the core.
And Bruce hurriedly stayed silent, upon sensing my anger.
"Do you know what happened the night I went to Natalie's?" I grit out, wanting to not yell at my beta.
"You went to Natalie's?" Bruce's eyes almost bulge right out of their
socket.
"Fuck, yes. I had gone in search of Kristen everywhere..and I had no choice but to go there. Yes, it sounds incredulous but I did go there, hoping that I would find Kristen there and that was five days ago." I explain, trying as much as I can to keep my temper in check because losing it at this point will not solve a thing.
"Christ, what happened!?" Bruce looks completely perplexed.
"Natalie thought I came to reconcile with her," I tighten my fists.
"Oh, my..shit!" Bruce seems to have a hard time believing this.
"And when I asked about Kristen. She got upset, and rained insults at me." I swiftly narrate my encounter with my ex-wife, who will be my mother-in-law in three months.
"Now I can see why you're so tense," Bruce's eyes are still welled up
in their sockets.
"Because Natalie still wants me and she'll do everything to get me
back," It's insane how I know her so well. She might go about fooling other people that she's changed, but I know she hasn't. "Meaning she'll hurt Kristen if she's given the opportunity?" Bruce
inquires.
"I know so. She can't just show up out of the blue to take Kristen out. Something's wrong." My voice is rough because my throat is thick. "Let's go find my mate!" I add.
