Chapter 117 Mother
Kristen's POV
Five days later.
"It was hard to recognize him because he was wearing a hoodie like a face like being with me is no different from walking on eggshells.
"And so you jumped on him," I still glare at her because I am still upset with her. She blatantly told me she was drunk when she climbed on Calhoun. It was the night he went looking for me.
"I am so sorry, Kristen. Had I known it was Calhoun, I wouldn't have acted that way." Sapphire pouts as she puts her hand on my arm.
"Just forgive her," Maddy implores on behalf.
"Believe me when I say I have no eyes for your man," Sapphire continues, using her with her huge baby blues.
"That's enough," I stop her because it's working.
"Where exactly did you run to? Calhoun looked over everywhere for you," Maddy suddenly pops this.
"I just decided to take a break from him," I tell them, which isn't even a lie. But I still leave out the rest of what happened.
"What happened between you two?" Sapphire has her eyes narrowed in their sockets as she turns to me.
"Had a fight?" Maddy asks innocently.
And I nod, not wanting to tell them about the whole Emilia saga. Because it's enough already
Calhoun and I are back to normal and it's all that matters.
"Have you heard?" Sapphire suddenly drops this.
"Heard what?" I ask with keen interest because I know she wants to gossip.
"That Ben called off his wedding with the girl he was supposed to marry, simply because an ex-girlfriend of his showed up on the day of his coronation?"
And I clamp my mouth shut because my friends have no idea it's me and I want it to stay that way.
"Woah, who is this ex-girlfriend, Ciara?" Maddy seems curious.
"It might be," Sapphire taps her chin thoughtfully.
"If they hadn't tagged it ex-girlfriend, I would have thought it was Kristen." Maddy giggles.
"Me too," Sapphire agrees.
And I do my best to keep my mouth shut. Thankfully the rumors were spread and my name was left out of it. But why? Could it be that Calhoun served them a warning to leave my name out?
"So what will happen to Ben Gregory, will he take another wife?" I question Sapphire. because I don't want to seem silent throughout the discussion before they start suspecting it's me.
"I'm not sure, they said he's chosen to be single for a while," Sapphire looks unsure of herself.
"He's still young. Maybe he wants to fuck around for three years and then settle down at age twenty-five," Maddy kisses her teeth before grinning sickly to herself.
"Right, he's too young to take a wife. Not man enough or fully developed. Plus he needs to work on his anger management." Maddy seems to agree with her.
"That's not entirely true," I speak up because there's this tugging feeling in me that needs me to defend Ben.
"What?" My friends question me in unison.
"I mean to say he's not as bad as they portray him," I say quietly.
"How do you know?" Maddy raises a brow at me.
"Have you forgotten the
ime you two met I he told you he'd
never speak with you again?" Sapphire gently jabs her shoulder against mine as she reminds me of this.
"Yeah, so rude," Maddy frowns.
"Well, he's now an Alpha. The weight of the responsibilities piled on his shoulders is enough to make him change." I explain.
"You speak as if you know him too well," Sapphire examines my face.
"Have you two met up since graduation day?" Maddy blinks
"No," I lie because I don't want them to know what transpired
between me and Ben.
"Better," Sapphire shoots me a straight look, "Keep out of his way for good because I'm sure he hasn't gotten over you yet."
I tuck my hair behind my ear and say nothing else.
We're still walking around and drinking our smoothies.
I put my dark shades above my forehead and sigh heavily. "What?" They chorus, staring at me carefully. They do this all the time because I'm pregnant.
"It's been quite a while since I shifted and ran," I point out.
"Why? Is pregnancy making you lazy?" Maddy raises a brow at me.
"Not entirely. I just seemed to forget about it. And Calhoun goes for a run every morning. I watch him through the window." I make this known to them.
"Do you want to join him?" Sapphire looks at me.
"Sometimes," I purse my lips for some seconds before continuing, " But he needs some time alone, as an Alpha and a businessman. I
shouldn't be around him at all times."
"Yish, you're already sounding like a married Luna," Sapphire
smacks my shoulder.
This makes me bubble with chuckles.
Come to think of it, I never thought about being the Greyhound's
Luna.
When I get married to Calhoun, I'll ultimately become his Luna and rule beside him. Make decisions in his absence.
Oh my god! It crossed my mind several times but I never thought so
deeply about it.
"Why are you frowning," Sapphire asks me.
"What?" I blink.
"You just frowned as if you recalled a bad memory," Sapphire
continues, her blue eyes searching mine already.
"Oh," that's all I can say.
"Kristen..."
My breathing seize for a second when I hear the familiar voice of my
mother.
"Natalie, Hey," my friends acknowledge her presence when she nears us. And I can't fail to notice how stiff and tensious things seem
to be.
"Sapphire, Maddy. It's been a long time since I've seen you girls,"
she beams at them before giving them one-arm hugs.
Mom's really here.
This is the first time in five months I am seeing her.
And I still have this tingling of guilt running deep within me.
Her husband divorced her to marry me. And now, I am carrying his
child.
"Mother," my voice is loud, distinct.
"Oh my god, you're pregnant!" she gasps and it is obviously the first
time she's learning about the pregnancy.
Her eyes are large in their sockets as she fixes them on my bump.
I can see Maddy and Sapphire exchanging a look.
And Mom surprises us all by stepping forward and pulling me into a
quick hug.
She is carefree around me but I don't think I can be that way with
her, after so much has transpired between us as mother and
daughter.
And I don't want to think she's faking things, because the hug seems
to have lasted longer than normal.
It makes me feel uncomfortable but I don't pull away from the hug. Because of how she treated me five months ago. When Bruce was willing to take me to Calhoun's office, she approached me.
