Chapter 133 The Betrayal

Chapter 133 The Betrayal

Inside — Thirty Minutes Later

The farmhouse kitchen was crowded.

Sophia sat at the head of the table, Victoria in a portable crib beside her. Alexander stood by the window, watching the fields. Marcus paced. Kat leaned against the counter. Claire sat in the corner, still silent.

General Marcus Kane—a barrel-chested man with a scarred face and eyes like chips of ice—stood at the foot of the table, a tablet in his hand.

"I've been tracking Rafael for six months," Kane said. "He has three safe houses in the tristate area. Two in the city. One in Connecticut."

Kat frowned. "Connecticut?"

"Greenwich. A mansion on the water. He bought it under a shell company last year." Kane pulled up satellite images on the tablet. "This is where he retreats when he feels threatened. Fortified walls. Security cameras. A private dock."

Alexander studied the images. "How many men?"

"At least twenty. Possibly more."

"And Elena Vasquez? The journalist?"

Kane's expression darkened. "We believe she's being held in the basement of his Manhattan safe house. But we can't confirm without sending someone in."

Sophia leaned forward. "Then send me."

Every head in the room turned.

"Absolutely not," Alexander said.

"Listen to me," Sophia said, her voice steady. "Rafael wants the USB. He wants me. If I go to him—publicly, openly he'll focus on me. That gives you time to find Elena. To get Claire somewhere safe. To protect Victoria."

"No." Alexander crossed to her, his eyes blazing. "I didn't break out of prison to watch you walk into a trap."

"It's not a trap if I'm the bait."

"Sophia—"

"I'm done hiding." She stood, facing him. "I spent years running from who I was. From what I did. From the people I hurt. I'm not running anymore. If Rafael wants a war, I'll give him one. But I'm not sending anyone else to fight it for me."

The room was silent.

Claire spoke for the first time. "She's right."

Everyone looked at her.

Claire stood, her hands shaking but her voice firm. "David called me last night. He said Rafael knows about the farmhouse. He knows about Elena. He knows about everything."

She looked at Sophia. "The only way to end this is to face him. Together."

Alexander's jaw tightened. "You want to use my wife and daughter as bait."

"Your wife?" Sophia blinked.

Alexander met her eyes. "We never divorced. The papers were never finalized. You're still Sophia Blackwood. And I'm still your husband."

Sophia's heart pounded. "Alexander—"

"We can argue about it later." He turned to Kane. "What's the plan?"

Rafael's Manhattan Safe House — 2:00 PM

The building was a converted warehouse in the Meatpacking District. No signage. No windows on the ground floor. Security cameras on every corner.

Sophia stood across the street, alone, the USB drive in her pocket.

She had insisted on coming alone.

Alexander was in a van two blocks away, watching through a sniper scope. Marcus was at the farmhouse with Victoria and Claire. Kat and her men were positioned on the rooftops.

Kane was inside undercover as a maintenance worker, feeding them intel through an earpiece.

Sophia took a breath.

Then she crossed the street.

The door opened before she could knock. A man in a black suit muscular, expressionless stepped aside.

"Ms. Hart," he said. "Mr. Castillo is expecting you."

Sophia stepped inside.

The warehouse had been converted into something out of a nightmare.

The main floor was empty except for a single chair in the center of the room.

Chains hung from the ceiling.

The walls were covered in soundproofing foam the kind used in recording studios.

Or interrogation rooms.

Rafael Castillo stood by the far wall, a glass of wine in his hand. He looked exactly as Sophia remembered slick, confident, dangerous.

"Sophia," he said, spreading his arms. "So glad you could make it."

She stopped ten feet from him. "Where is Elena Vasquez?"

"Straight to business. I respect that." Rafael set his wine down. "She's downstairs. Unharmed. For now."

"The USB is in my pocket. I'll give it to you when I see her walking out the front door."

Rafael smiled. "You're not in a position to make demands."

"I'm the one with the USB." Sophia held it up. "And I'm the one who can destroy you with it. So yes. I am."

Rafael's smile faded. He nodded to one of his men, who disappeared through a side door.

Five minutes later, Elena Vasquez was pushed into the room.

She looked terrible bruised, bloody, barely able to stand. But her eyes were alive. Burning.

"Sophia," Elena croaked. "You shouldn't have come."

"Neither should you." Sophia turned to Rafael. "Let her go. Then you get the drive."

Rafael studied her for a long moment. Then he nodded.

The guards dragged Elena to the front door and pushed her outside.

Sophia watched through the security monitor as Elena stumbled across the street then disappeared into an alley where Kat's men were waiting.

"Your turn," Rafael said.

Sophia held up the USB. "You want it? Come get it."

Rafael's eyes narrowed.

Sophia smiled cold, sharp, dangerous.

"You wanted a war, Rafael. Congratulations. You just started one."

She threw the USB into the air.

Time slowed.

Rafael lunged for it.

The security cameras exploded.

Two Blocks Away

Alexander pulled the trigger.

The shot took out the main power line to the warehouse. Darkness flooded the building.

Then Kat's men breached the front and back doors simultaneously.

Flashbangs. Smoke. Chaos.

Alexander was already moving, sprinting across the street, his weapon up.

Inside, the world was screaming.

Rafael's men stumbled through the smoke, disoriented, firing blindly. Kat's team moved like shadows silent, efficient, deadly.

Alexander found Sophia in the corner, pressed against the wall, her hands over her ears.

"Sophia!" He grabbed her arm. "We need to go!"

"Rafael—"

"Is mine."

A figure emerged from the smoke.

Rafael. Blood streaming from a cut on his forehead. A gun in his hand. His eyes wild.

"Alexander," Rafael said, almost laughing. "I heard you broke out of prison. Bad decision."

"I've made worse."

Rafael raised the gun.

Alexander didn't flinch.

"You think killing me will solve anything?" Rafael said. "I'm a symptom, Blackwood. Cut me out, and another grows in my place. Cross. Tanaka. Someone worse."

"Then I'll cut them out too."

Rafael's finger tightened on the trigger.

A shot rang out.

Rafael staggered.

Behind him, Claire Moretti stood in the smoke, a gun in her shaking hands.

She had followed them. She had come anyway.

And she had just shot Rafael Castillo.

Rafael looked down at the blood spreading across his chest. Then he looked at Claire.

"You..." he whispered.
