Chapter 119 THE IMPOSSIBLE TRUTH SOPHIA PENTHOUSE ~ NEW YORK

Three days after Victoria was born, Sophia was sitting in her penthouse living room, staring at a diaper like it was a complicated puzzle.
Victoria lay on the couch, kicking her tiny legs and crying loudly. Sophia sighed in frustration.
“Please stop crying,” she begged. “I’m trying to help you here.”
Victoria cried even louder.
Sophia groaned. “How can something so small make so much noise?”
Claire had gone out to buy groceries, leaving Sophia alone with the baby for the first time.
“This is definitely Claire’s job,” Sophia muttered while struggling with the diaper tabs. “Why are there so many sticky things on this thing?”
Victoria let out another loud wail.
“I know, I know,” Sophia said quickly. “You hate my technique.”
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Sophia froze. She looked at the clock.
9:00 AM.
“I’m not expecting anyone,” she murmured.
She carefully picked up Victoria and walked to the door. Using the screen beside it, she checked the camera.
A man stood outside. He was tall, maybe in his late forties, wearing a neat suit. His dark hair was starting to turn gray near the sides.
Sophia frowned.
He looked familiar… but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him.
“Who is it?” she asked through the intercom.
The man leaned closer to the camera.
“My name is Thomas Webb,” he said calmly. “I’m an attorney.”
Sophia’s stomach tightened.
“I have information about Victor Lang that you need to hear,” the man continued. “It’s urgent.”
Sophia’s heart skipped.
Victor.
Slowly, she unlocked the door but kept the safety chain on.
“What information?” she asked carefully.
Thomas looked straight at her. “Information that will change everything you believe about his death.”
Sophia frowned. “And about Alexander Blackwood,” he added.
Her grip tightened on Victoria. “And about your revenge.”
Sophia’s voice became sharp. “What are you talking about?”
Thomas spoke quietly. Victor Lang didn’t die in that car accident.”
Sophia felt like the ground shifted under her feet. “What?”
“May I come inside?” Thomas said gently. “This is not something we should discuss in the hallway.”
Sophia hesitated. Her instincts told her something was wrong.
But curiosity won.
She unlocked the chain and let him in. Victoria was still fussing, so Sophia rocked her gently while Thomas sat on the couch.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Thomas said the words that changed everything. “Victor Lang is alive.”
Sophia stared at him. “That’s impossible.”
“The car accident was staged,” Thomas continued calmly. “Victor has been in witness protection for the last three years.”
Sophia shook her head. “No. I saw his body. I went to the funeral.”
Thomas sighed. “The body was misidentified.”
He pulled out his phone and opened a photo. “This was taken two weeks ago.”
Sophia looked at the screen. Her heart nearly stopped.
It was Victor.
Older. Thinner. More tired.
But unmistakably him.
Alive.
“Oh my God,” Sophia whispered.
Thomas nodded. “Victor has been working with the FBI,” he explained. “He gathered evidence against several criminal groups. Including Helena Blackwood’s organization.”
Sophia sat down slowly. Her legs felt weak.
“So the FBI helped him fake his death?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“But Alexander was charged with ordering the murder.”
Thomas nodded. “That part is true.”
Sophia looked confused.
“Alexander hired Viktor Kozlov to kill Victor,” Thomas said. “But the FBI stopped Kozlov before he could complete the job.”
Sophia felt dizzy. “So Alexander… never actually killed anyone.”
“No,” Thomas admitted. “But he planned it.”
Thomas leaned forward. “The FBI gave Victor a choice,” he explained. “Disappear and help them build a bigger case… or let Alexander go free.”
Sophia stared at him. “And Victor chose to disappear.”
Thomas nodded. “He’s been watching everything from a distance.”
Sophia’s voice shook. “He watched me destroy my life trying to avenge him?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
Sophia stood suddenly. “Where is he?”
Thomas hesitated. “He’s downstairs.”
Sophia’s eyes widened. “He asked me to explain first,” Thomas said carefully. “So you wouldn’t faint when you saw him.”
Sophia pointed to the door. “Bring him up. Now.”
Five minutes later, the elevator doors opened.
A man stepped inside the penthouse. Sophia’s breath caught.
It was him. Victor Lang.
He looked older and tired, but it was definitely him. “Hello, Sophia,” he said quietly.
Sophia couldn’t move. For three years she had mourned him.
Cried for him. Destroyed her life for him.
And now he was standing right in front of her.
Victor looked at the baby in her arms. “Is that—”
“Victoria,” Sophia whispered.
She swallowed hard. “My daughter.”
She paused. “Alexander’s daughter.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“You’re alive,” Sophia said.
Her voice trembled. “You’re really alive.”
“I’m sorry,” Victor said softly.
He stepped closer but didn’t touch her. “For three years I wanted to tell you the truth.”
Sophia’s voice suddenly rose. “Then why didn’t you?”
Victoria started crying again.
“I faked my own death for you!” Sophia shouted.
“I changed my identity! I became Elise Moreau!”
Her eyes burned with anger.
“I tried to send Alexander to prison for murder!”
Victor lowered his head. “I know.”
“And you let me believe you were dead!” Sophia snapped.
“The FBI wouldn’t allow contact,” Victor said quietly. “They said it would ruin the case.”
Sophia laughed bitterly. “Well congratulations,” she said.
“You ruined my life instead.”
Victor took a deep breath.
“Sophia… Alexander still ordered my murder.”
“But he didn’t succeed!” she shouted.
“There’s no body! No victim!”
“He intended to kill me,” Victor said firmly. “That’s still a crime.”
Thomas stepped forward. “Victor’s testimony will help keep Alexander in prison,” he said. “He can now confirm the murder plot.”
Sophia looked between them in disbelief. “You want Alexander to rot in prison…”
She pointed at Victor. “…for trying to kill someone who is standing right here, alive?”
“Alexander is dangerous,” Victor said quietly. “You and the baby are safer if he stays locked up.”
Sophia’s eyes flashed with anger. “Don’t you dare use my daughter to justify this!”
She held Victoria closer. “You let me suffer for three years!”
Her voice shook with fury. “And now you want my help keeping an innocent man in prison?”
“He’s not innocent.”
“He didn’t kill you!” Sophia shouted.
“He tried to,” Victor replied.
