Chapter 155 155. Traffic laws
Quinnie

“You didn't have to come, you know?” I said to Sebastian for the third time.

He gives me a hard look. “You and Jace are out here of course I was coming with you.”

“Oh, drop the serial killer stare, it's not fooling anyone you know,” I snap looking through another pile of shirts and holding one up to Jace.

This boy is growing like a weed.

Jace looks just as unimpressed as his father, just with more of that special brand of childlike petulance.

I swear he's seven going on seventeen.

“We’ve been to twelve stores already,” Sebastian complains. “When you said you were going shopping, I didn't realize you intended to buy him an outfit for every day of the year.”

“If you're going to complain, go sit over there with Kade.”

I point to a cluster of chairs at the front of the store, dubbed the “husband section.”

SebStioan give me a look that I take to mean, you’ve-got-to+be-out-of-your+mind. “No thanks.”

“Bash, you can see us just fine from over there. We are okay.”

“I'm sure you are, but you're safer if you're in arms reach.

I roll my lips together but don't say anything. I know the kind of stress he's under right now.

It's the same kind of street that has had an influx of pack mates seeking me out for someone to speak to.

The thought of being thrusted back into strife, of being back into a possible war, has everyone on edge.

It doesn't help that there is a psycho around killing people.

If it wasn't for the fact that there were things we needed I wouldn't have left pack lands but winter is coming and we can't receive deliveries inside the pack.

Jace tries to go with his uncle.

“Not you,” I warn.

“But, Mom….,” He whines, “My feet hurt.”

“Aww, poor baby.” I coo. “You’ll live.”

Jace gives his father a look and shrugs as if to say, I tried.

And what a pathetic attempt it was.

Jace can easily play for hours so there is no way he is feeling tired right now.

Sebastian pats his shoulder and I glare at the both of them.

The nerve to try and play me.

After getting a few more things, I finally decided to take pity on them. I declare that I'm done and am met with three collective sighs of relief.

“I'm not that bad!” I gripe. “Come one I guess you guys have earned some lunch.”

Sebastian takes bags from me and I give him a grateful rib on his chest.

“Finally, I think my stomach has started to eat itself,” Kade whines.

I jab him with my elbow. “You're just as bad as Sebastian.”

I lead them to the food court and we grab a seat there so they can dig in.

“Can I have ice cream after?” Jace asks, taking a bite of his double cheeseburger.

“Sure. I could go for a cone,” I say excited by the thought of a sweet, creamy treat.

Sebastian leans into my ear. “I’ve got a cone you can lick.”

A shot of lust coils between my legs.

“Behave, we're in public.”

“I don't mind an audience,” he says.

I turn and nip the bottom of his lip in warning but it has the opposite effect and Sebastian growls low, wanting.

“Hello, you're not exactly alone here,” Kade says with his nose scrunched in disgust.

“Yeah. No kissing where people can see,” Jace seconds.

“How do you think you got here,” Sebastian teases.

“Eww,” Jace said with the enthusiasm of a kid who still thinks all girls are gross.

Goddess help me when that changes during his juvenile years.

“Alright, let's finish up,” I tell the boys.

Once we're done eating, I grab Jace's hand and we all go to the ice cream shop before heading out to the parking lot.

The parking lot is quiet, our footsteps echo on the pavement floor as we make our way to the jeep. Kade and Sebastian are ahead of us, situating the bags in the car, before climbing into the drive and passenger seat.

Looking over to the side I see Jace's ice cream melting, sliding down the e side of the cone. I stop and dig into the bag to pull out a wet wipe.

“Jay come he—

A screech of tires drowns out my sentence as a large black minivan comes flying down the narrow pathway.

Without thinking, I tackle Jace out of the way of the car, wrapping my arms around his head to protect him from the fall.

I think that the car is going to drive past but instead it screeches to a stop.

The door opens and a male with a baklava jumps out.

My wolf snarls, her maternal instincts overriding her submissive nature.

Before I can shift he kicks out and my head snaps to the side hitting the concrete floor.

“Mom!” Jace screams.

A roar comes from somewhere behind.

Sebastian.

His rage lights up the bond like a spark on a line of gasoline.

“Hurry up,” the man in the front seat shouts.

My wolf surges to the forefront, protecting my pup the only thing on my mind.

“Jace run!” I order knowing that the further he is away from them the better.

I shift out my claws and attack, slashing at his chest.

“Fucking bitch,” the male hisses.

I'm no match for the dominant male, but I’m not looking to win. All I need is to be distracting enough for Jace to get away.

He back hands me so hard my head spins like I'm fighting off an episode of vertigo.

Then hands are one and I'm taking into the dark cab of the car.

The door slams at the same moment a heavy impact rocks the van.

I know it's Sebastian's wolf slamming his body into the Van trying to knock it over.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” the driver yells.

The tires scream as the driver floors the gas pedal backing up quickly before jerking forward.

My body rolls, slamming from one wall into the other as the car twists and turns down the winding path that leads to the outside.

The big bastard who took me puts a heavy boot on top of me to hold me down. He presses down so hard I cry out.

Despite the pain, I thank the Goddess that they have me and not Jace.

Taking off his balaclava he runs a hand through his sweaty, greasy hair.

His face looks like that of a toad, bloated cheeks, large round eyes, unfortunate features really.

I struggle against him even though my head feels like a tilt-a-whirl.

“Hold still or I’ll hurt you,” he cautions.

Something hot and wet is dampening the back of my head.

As much as pride hates it. I have to play this smart so I stop moving.

He roughly secures my hands behind my back with what feels like zipline but could just be plastic like rope.

Confident I'm secure he looms over me, his foot still squarely on my back.

Breathe, my wolf reminds me. Don't allow our mate to worry unnecessarily.

She's right. I don't want to risk Sebastian getting hurt because he rushes in here to save me.

I just have to clear my head enough to use my ability.

“Not so tough now are you,” he taunts, putting his weight down harder.

“Coming from the guy who picks a fight with a woman less than half his size, it is not that impressive.”

For a moment I think he is going to hit me again but he simply stares at me.

No he leers at me.

Eyes taking on that smarmy edge that sick males get when they are finally in a position of power over someone.

He inhales deeply, and that look gets even slimier.

“You might want to watch your mouth, little submissive,” he sneers.

The way he says submissive is alone to the way one might address someone they feel is beneath them.

My opinion of him plummets so low, archeologists will have trouble finding it 500 years from now.

“Why? Am I speaking too fast for you?”

He snatches the corner of my hair and yanks it up the rank order of his breath singing my nostril hairs.

“That mouth is going to—

“We’ve got company,” the driver shouts.

The toad lets go of my hair and clomps to the small window in the back.

“Fuck. I thought they’d take more time bringing the runt back to the pack,” he says. “Gun it, Vin.”

I look outside the window and see the recognizable black Tahoe swerving through cars at a speed that has to be breaking at least five traffic laws.

Sebastian's anger is violent, a rolling storm ready to take anyone who stands in his way.

The van picks up speed but the amount of cars in front of us prevents them from going faster.

A sharp turn takes us off road into the hills that lead to a forest up ahead.

“They're gaining on us,” the toad yells as if his partner is purposely slowing down.

Brain fog clearing until only a dull thumping remains, I get ready to make my move.

I suppose I should be grateful for their belief that as a submissive there is no possible way I could put up a real struggle against them.

It will certainly give me the advantage here.

The driver looks back at the window, then his eyes widen with desperation. “I say we take care of her here. Toss the body out onto the road when we're done. That should distract them long enough for us to get away.”

“The boss won't be happy about that.”

“Who gives a fuck. I cannot sign up to get my all torn apart for some bitch.”

That's when it hits me Jace was never the target, I am.
