Chapter 171
Serena’s POV.
As Douglas rose from the remnants of our battle, his form contorted into a monstrous shape, my heart plummeted with a sickening sense of dread. His body seemed to ooze darkness, a vile substance that seeped from his massive frame like tar, staining everything it touched.
Fear clenched at my chest as I beheld the grotesque sight before me, unable to tear my gaze away from the horror that now stood in our midst. I turned to my mother, my voice trembling as I struggled to find the words to articulate the terror that gripped me.
"What... what is that?" I managed to stammer
Mom's expression darkened with sorrow as she met my gaze, a heaviness weighing upon her features. With a heavy sigh, she spoke, her voice filled with a mixture of resignation and regret.
"That's what happens when Aerok has control over the soul," she explained. "It twists and distorts, transforming the essence of a person into something... something monstrous."
A shiver ran down my spine as I absorbed her words, the implications sinking in with a bone-deep dread. If Aerok had the power to corrupt Douglas in such a way, then what hope did any of us have against such a formidable foe?
The realization sent a chill coursing through me, and I couldn't help but wonder if my own soul was at risk of succumbing to the same fate. I turned to her, my voice trembling as I voiced the question that lingered in the back of my mind.
"M-my soul too?" I stammered, the words barely audible above the chaos that surrounded us.
Her gaze softened with compassion as she looked upon me, a gentle warmth in her eyes that offered a glimmer of solace amidst the darkness that threatened to consume us.
"Your soul is beautiful, Serena," she assured me. "No matter who it belongs to, never forget that."
Her words washed over me like a balm, a soothing reassurance that offered a flicker of hope in the face of overwhelming despair. And as I gazed upon the twisted form of Douglas, I knew that no matter what trials lay ahead, I would face them with courage and resolve, secure in the knowledge that I was not alone.
As Douglas's rage consumed him, his monstrous form seemed to expand with fury, his eyes ablaze with a menacing light. I watched in horror as he turned his wrath towards my mother, Amelia, accusing her of betrayal and deceit.
"You unfaithful mate!" he thundered. "You should have stood by me, trusted me, supported me! Instead, you aid this traitor in destroying me!"
His words cut through the air like a knife, slicing through the already tense atmosphere with a chilling finality. But my mother's response was one of defiance, her own anger simmering beneath the surface as she faced him head-on.
"I loved you," she declared. "Even when your plans grew darker, I remained loyal to you. But I will not stand by and watch as you sacrifice our daughter for your own twisted ambitions."
Tears welled in her eyes as she spoke, her pain evident in every word. "I still love you," she whispered. "But I cannot let you destroy everything in our daughter's life."
But Douglas's response was a vicious snarl, his rage boiling over as he launched himself at my mother with savage intent. Shadows writhed around him like serpents, striking out with lethal force as they sought to strangle her.
Fear gripped my heart as I watched the scene unfold, a sense of helplessness washing over me like a tidal wave. I wanted to scream, to intervene, but before I could even utter a word, it was too late.
With a surge of panic, my powers surged forth, my shadow tendrils springing to life in a desperate attempt to protect my mother. But in my haste, I lost control, the tendrils lashing out wildly, fueled by fear and uncertainty.
"Serena!" I heard someone cry out. My heart hammered in my chest as I watched in horror, powerless to stop the devastation unfolding before me.
At that moment, as darkness threatened to consume us all, I knew that we were teetering on the edge of a precipice. The path ahead seemed fraught with danger, but if there was one thing I was certain of, it was that I would do whatever it took to protect the ones I loved, no matter the cost.
