Chapter 161

Serena’s POV.

As I paced back and forth in my dimly lit room, the weight of uncertainty pressed heavily upon my shoulders. Thoughts swirled within my mind like a tempest, each one more foreboding than the last. The impending threat of Douglas's sinister scheme to awaken the ancient dark god, Aerok, loomed ominously over our heads, casting a shadow of fear and doubt over everything we held dear.

My fingers clenched and unclenched, my nails digging into my palms with each restless step I took. My gaze flickered to the window, where the moon hung low in the night sky, its silvery glow offering little solace to the turmoil raging within me.

But amidst the chaos of my thoughts, one concern burned brighter than the rest – Graham. My love, my anchor in this storm of uncertainty. I couldn't bear the thought of losing him to Douglas's wicked machinations, couldn't bear the thought of facing this darkness alone.

As if on cue, I heard a soft sound behind me, and before I could react, there he stood – Graham, the embodiment of strength and warmth in the midst of my turmoil. His presence alone was enough to soothe the frayed edges of my nerves, to ease the relentless pounding of my heart.

Without a word, without a second thought, I closed the distance between us, my arms winding around his neck as though they had a will of their own. And then, without warning, I kissed him – a desperate, fervent kiss born of fear and longing, of uncertainty and hope.

Graham staggered back slightly, taken aback by the suddenness and intensity of my actions. But then, as if awakening from a daze, he responded in kind, his lips meeting mine with a hunger that mirrored my own. In that moment, everything else faded away – the looming threat of Aerok, the weight of our fears – until there was only us, lost in each other's embrace.

For a fleeting instant, the world outside ceased to exist, and all that mattered was the warmth of Graham's lips against mine, the reassuring strength of his arms around me. In that embrace, I found solace, I found courage, I found the unwavering belief that no matter what trials lay ahead, as long as we faced them together, we could overcome anything.

As our lips melded in an intoxicating dance of passion and desperation, a sudden chill swept through me, sending shivers down my spine. It was as though a dark cloud had descended upon us, tainting the air with its malevolent presence. And then, just as quickly as it had come, a vision ripped through the fabric of my consciousness, wrenching me from the blissful oblivion of our embrace.

In that fleeting moment, I saw it – Graham, kneeling before an altar bathed in the eerie glow of moonlight, his eyes glazed with an otherworldly fervor. And there, looming above him like a specter from the depths of a nightmare, stood Neris, the goddess of resurrection. Her voice echoed in the recesses of my mind, cold and unforgiving, as she declared Graham's soul to be hers, a sacrifice to appease her insatiable hunger.

My heart seized within my chest as the vision played out before me, each word a dagger to my soul. I felt as though the ground had been pulled out from beneath me, leaving me suspended in a void of despair and disbelief.

In the wake of my sudden stillness, Graham's embrace faltered, his concern evident in the furrow of his brow as he searched my face for answers. His voice was urgent, tinged with a hint of fear as he pleaded for understanding, for reassurance in the face of my newfound silence. I only heard the voice, his words were blurred, all I could hear were Nersis’s words and none of his. He was desperate for answers.

But how could I explain the unexplainable, the horror that had unfolded within the depths of my mind? How could I find the words to convey the weight of what I had seen, the terror of what awaited us?

My gaze met Graham's, and in that moment, all I could see was the man I loved, the man whose very existence had become intertwined with my own. And yet, beneath the surface, there lingered a darkness, a shadow that threatened to consume him whole.

Trembling, I reached out to him, my fingers trembling against his skin as I searched for solace in the warmth of his touch. And then, with a voice that trembled with emotion, I whispered the question that echoed through the caverns of my mind.

"Why, Graham? Why would you do this?"

As Graham's gaze met mine, confusion and fear danced within his eyes, mirroring the tumultuous storm raging within my own heart. His lips parted, poised to question the accusation that hung heavy in the air between us, but the words died on his tongue as he registered the intensity of my accusation.

"Serena, what... what are you talking about?" he stammered.

Anger flared within me, fueled by the bitter taste of betrayal that lingered on my tongue. How could he stand before me, innocent and unaware, when I had seen the truth laid bare within the depths of my mind?

"Why would you sacrifice your soul to Neris, Graham?" I demanded. "How could you do that to yourself? To us?"

Graham recoiled as though struck, the color draining from his face as he struggled to comprehend the accusations I hurled at him. And then, with a heavy sigh, he seemed to deflate before my eyes, the weight of his confession hanging heavy in the air between us.

"Serena, listen," he began. "I... I was dying anyway. There was nothing anyone could do. I couldn't bear the thought of leaving you, of facing this darkness alone. So I did what I could. I made a deal."

The truth hit me like a tidal wave, washing away the anger and confusion in its wake, leaving behind only a hollow ache that echoed through the depths of my soul. He had sacrificed himself for me, for us, without a second thought.

Tears stung at the corners of my eyes as I looked at him, my heart heavy with the weight of his sacrifice. "You didn't have to do that, Graham," I whispered hoarsely.

But before I could protest further, he pulled me into his arms once more, holding me close as though afraid to let go. "For you, Serena," he murmured against the curve of my neck. "I would do it all again in a heartbeat. My soul is yours to take."
