I breathed and began to pace again when I realized
"Hey, hey. Relax. We'll figure this out. But only if you listen to me," Tim said, pulling me towards the couch and forcing me to sit.
He'd arrived an hour after I had called him and had searched everywhere but nothing and nobody.
"What am I going to do? What if this is Duncan?"
"I doubt that. You'd be dead by now if it was him,"
That was true. I had seen him kill Zoe. He wouldn't hesitate to kill me whether or not we were intimate didn't matter to him.
"Then who could possibly know about my past, my entire life? My mother?"
Tim was quiet for a sec before he spoke.
"Maybe Alice sent it?"
"Then what is the letter?" It was definitely not Alice.
"Then maybe you should take this as a good thing. Whoever sent this knows about your mother and who you are."
Whoever sent this had the ability to make or break me.
"That's not helping my fear," I stood up as I ran my hands through my hair.
"Wait it out. I'm sure they'll get in touch. They are going to try to blackmail you or try to get you to do something for them. If that's the case, let's hope it's not something detrimental but this is an opportunity to find your mother's killer,"
I sighed. Be that as it may, I didn't like being in the hands of anyone. It never ended well.
"Look, I'll station a few officers here to watch the house. Anyone that comes in, you'll see them first. I could wire the place to, just to be safe,"
I nodded. "Thanks Tim. This means a whole lot,"
Tim ruffled my hair.
"So, what did you need those drugs for?"
He asked.
"Viktor. I'm going to his apartment today,"
He nodded.
"Be careful."
"I always am,"
Tim gave me a pointed look. "Not lately you haven't."
He said. He was right of course but I wasn't about to admit that.
"I'll be careful."
I added and he nodded.
Just then his phone rang and he picked it up.
"I'll be there in twenty," he said after a pause and then hung up.
"Who was that?" I asked.
"There's been a homicide in the area. I have to go,"
"I'll come with you,"
"Is that a good idea?" He asked and I shrugged.
"Who cares? Someone out there knows who I am,"
"But Duncan doesn't yet,"
Tim said.
"Good point but I'm still coming. I'll wear a disguise,"
"Alright then, come on,"
Tim drove us to a light street cordoned off by yellow Police tape. The flashing red and blue lights of the police car flashing.
Officers moved in controlled urgency, speaking in hushed tones while forensics examined the crime scene.
I slipped out of Tim's car wearing a pixie blonde wig.
Tim drove us to a dimly lit street cordoned off by yellow police tape. The flashing red and blue lights cast eerie shadows against the surrounding buildings.
Officers moved in controlled urgency, speaking in hushed tones while forensics examined the crime scene.
A detective I didn't recognize walked towards us with his eyes looking grim.
He was wearing a blue dress shirt with the sleeves folded all the way to his elbows.
He looked jacked and his hair was in a low ponytail
"What do we have?" Tim asked.
"It's gruesome," he said and then took a quick glance at me.
"Who are you?"
"Don't worry about it, she's with me,"" Tim said and the man shrugged.
He turned around and Tim had I fell into steps beside him.
"So, what do you think happened?"
"Not sure. Some type of wild animal,"
I gasped when we passed under the tape.
There was a man or woman on the floor in the pool of their own blood, headless.
I tried not to puke.
It wasn't just headless, it looked like some kind of animal had bitten off his head from his neck and then his hand and part of his league.
His gut was open, his insides on display.
"Jesus Christ!" Tim exclaimed, looking away. He looked about ready to puke and I couldn't blame him.
I'd never seen anything so gruesome in my life.
I glanced at Tim. "What could have done this?"
"No idea. We assume some kind of animal."
"What kind of animal would do this"
"Only thing I can think of is a lion, tiger, or a cheetah."
The detective said with a shrug. He didn't seem fazed at all which made me question my mental fortitude.
I was restraining myself from puking my guts out.
"Have we found any of these animals in the area?"
"I'm sure if we had then there would have been reports by now,"
Tim shook his head.
"Have the forensics do an autopsy. We have to find out what the fuck is going on,"
"Yes, Tim,"
Tim and I left the crime scene and began to look for clues.
"What the hell was that?"
I asked, my mind stealing reeling from the image I had just seen.
"Whatever it is, it's not natural,"
I rolled my eyes. "Let me guess... Vampires?"
"I know you don't believe me but whatever attacked that man was not an animal,"
"That's a possibility. It could just be an insane serial killer,"
"I guess we'll find out then,"
He said.
We searched around the area but there was nothing out of the ordinary
Just as we were about to leave, a rustling sound came from the alleyway ahead
Tim and I exchanged glances before cautiously moving towards the source. My heart pounded as I reached for the small knife hidden in my boot and Tim reached for his gun.
A trash can tipped over and a stray cat darted out, hissing before disappearing into the darkness.
Two more came out of the same place, shocking us both all over again
I exhaled, relieved but Tim remained tense. He scanned the shadows as if sensing something I couldn't.
"Let's go," he muttered, his jaw clenched. "I have a bad feeling about this,"
So did I
