Chapter 142
Duncan
I paced my room, my mind reeling with every type of emotion there was imaginable.
Trying to get my head in the right space was a bigger chore than I thought it would be.
Everything was spiraling out of control with no hope of survival.
Watching Anna almost die had broken something in me, no, it had broken multiple things in me.
Her waking up was only a stroke of luck.
A stroke of luck that I had pushed to it's limits. Her almost dying had made us discover something, something I wasn't sure I could tell her yet.
Most of my men were injured, although healed, a lot of them had died...
I swallowed, deciding not to think about the horrible outcome of that night.
A knock came at the door and I turned to find Levi poking his head through the ajar door.
I glanced at Anna, she was asleep again. She looked peaceful. My heart ached for her. She'd fought for us. Had saved me, had saved many of my men with her smart thinking. I was still confused on how she knew those bullies would work but I was glad she was at least okay.
I sighed and made my way out of my room to meet Levi.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice curt and sharp.
"You okay, man? He asked and I stared at him for the longest time before nodding with a sigh.
"I am as okay as a man who's lost a quarter of his men can be,"
I shrugged. It was a nonchalant shrug but I was filled with absolute dread inside.
Levi grabbed my shoulders and squeezed. He'd never been much of an emotional man but for some reason, that was the most emotion I had seen from him and it grounded me just for a second.
"Well, I have checked around and I think you're right. This whole thing is some kind of set up to keep us distractee. The crescent Stars didn't do this... at least the only reason they did this was because they were framed. I checked the camera footage again from Viktor's apartment and the tattoo we saw...Well, I think it was strategically shown for us to see it. Half the footage is missing too and it can't possibly be from any technical difficulties they claim."
Levi looked worried as he spoke. He never looked worried.
" We need to find out the root of the problem."
Levi paused and gave me a words look.
"What?"
"Let's look into Anna. She was the one there,"
"Enough of this nonsense, Levi."
I snapped.
"I'm not saying she's responsible,.I'm saying we shouldn't completely erase the possibly,"
"There are no possibilities. She would never betray me."
"Wouldn't she?" he raised an eyebrow at me
"She is human. She took the fact that you weren't human pretty hard. She went out on a date with Viktor of all people. That woman is a lot of things but she is and was not attracted to Viktor."
"I know she wasn't. She was doing it to spite me."
There was no way, Anna would betray. She loved m. She'd boy accepted it yet but she'd told me she did and that was all I cared to know about.
I wouldn't survive it if she betrayed me. I knew I'm wouldn't. That was why I knew she wouldn't.
Levi shook his head. He was clearly in disbelief but I didn't care.
"I know you're grieving, we all are. But this is serious. This woman can't be trusted,"
"When she first came, I told you to look into her, you told me there was nothing to worry about. Was that a lie?"
"No...but,"
"Then I don't want to hear it. She's done nothing but help us in every single way that's possible. She has helped with our money problems and made them go away. She helped with the ambush and killed more of our attackers. She's one of us, the only difference is she only has a human side."
"I think you are letting your love for her blind you from seeing that you can't trust her."
Just then Jonah walked in.
"Dun, I have some reports that need your urgent attention,"
"What is it?" I asked..
"One of the men we captured. He has confessed."
My eyes widened. We'd been torturing them for a whole week and had gotten nothing.
This was the breakthrough I needed.
"Let's go," i said and began to walk towards the basement with Jonah and Levi behind me
Jonah opened the door to the basement and I walked in.
Inside was a man with bloodshot eyes, a bunch of bruises all over his face and nose, broken arms and legs.
He was chained to an Andrew silver and iron Cross and around his neck was a wolf's bane brand that pierced into his skin, inflicting pain and weakening him. he looked ready to die.
At the far left of the room we're various torture devices like Hollow Fang Mask, Bloodletting Rack, Binding Circle of Thorns, The Silver Slicer. Wolf's bane
"Speak." I said to the disgusting man that had killed my most trusted man.
He stared at me.
"I didn't do it."
"Didn't do what?" I demanded,my hands clenched. The urge to punch him continuously into a wall overshadowed my senses.
"I'm not from the crescent star Mafia. I... I was hired." he choked on his own blood, coughing over and over again.
. gritting my teeth, I walked forward
"By who?" I demanded.
"Someone that wanted us...he wanted us..." he began to cough uncontrollably, blood spilling out of his mouth and nose like a rushing tap.
"Speak!" I snapped impatiently, the anger had settled on my chest, making me erratic. It was taking me every ounce of strength to prevent my wolf from taking over and clawing his gut out.
"He hired us to confuse you. He said if I was captured, we should tell you that he was coming for you and soon it will be too late to stop this war.
I stiffened.
"Who is ge?" I gritted.
He began to cough uncontrollably again, almost coughing out his own gut.
"His name... his name is Azael. He wants you to know he's coming for you."
Azeal.
I should have known.
