Chapter 21 Chapter 21
Gabriel
“The last girl is gone.”
Alistair , ripped his mask from his face, the night vision goggles already swinging from his fingers and came to stand next to me.
“That’s good.” I meant it with all the heart I had left but it didn’t sound like it.
Sometimes I hated that about me. That I was so lacking in emotion. Well apart from anger and evidence of that was all over the floor.
“Are you ok Gabriel?” He knew better than to ask that but he did anyway and honestly out of everyone who knew me I was more likely to answer him honestly.
Alistair wasn’t a king although he might as well have been. He was from a family like ours, but poorer and without the power.
Crime was in his blood, just like it was in mine. But unlike me I didnt think he liked these little side quests as much as I did.
Deep down he was a thief not a killer.
But he owed our family , and now he was loyal and more than that he agreed with Finns side quest to rid the world of the filth that littered it.
The kind of filth that kidnapped little girls.
It had made him worthy of my trust.
More than that it made him worthy of my friendship.
Ripping the night vision from my own face I rubbed my hands over the scars, coating my palms in the sweat.
“Yeah.” I mumbled. Why wasn’t I calmer? Usually doing this helped me but I felt more on edge than ever.
Standing next to me , he surveyed the damage. “You were even less in control than ever Gabriel. What’s going on with you?” Reaching his pocket he pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
I watched the orange glow for a second before I sighed. “That shit will kill for Ali, do you have one for me?”
Laughing he tapped one out of its packet. “I think the line of work we are in will kill us before the cigarettes do Gabriel. Well not you,” he side eyed me. “You’re already dead right? What name did you use to get out of the country this time.”
I smirked at him. “You know I can’t tell you that.”
Shaking his head his eyes went back to the bodies on the floor.
Sucking in another deep smoky breath he finally turned to me. “What do you want to do with these asshole?”
I wanted to kill then all over again, that’s what I wanted to do. The beast was prowling beneath my skin. Demanding blood or-
Well he couldn’t have the other thing. Several countries lay between me and Audrey.
“Leave them.” I toed the nearest body with the toe of my boot. “As a warning to the others.”
Alistairs eyebrows shot up. “Finn won’t like that. It might get back to your brothers.”
“Fuck them all.”
Alistair laughed but it was a humourless sound. “Sounds like you are home sick?” Arching an eyebrow he studied me and his smile told me he knew more about my personal life than I thought.
“Any particular reason?”
“Yes.” I snapped off the lit end of the cigarette between my fingers and crushed the rest before stuffing it into my pocket.
I might not care what my family thought but I wasn’t stupid enough to leave my dna for the authorities to find.
“Finn says there is a woman.”
I lifted my eyes to him. “It’s the same woman as always.”
“The same? You’re still watching her?”
I rolled my eyes. What a stupid question. “Always.”
That was why I couldn’t calm down. I needed to see her. It had already been hours. Longer than I had gone since she had moved back to Corals cottage.
“Have you made contact?”
“Yes.” Pulling out my phone I dialled into the cameras that tracked Audrey’s every move.
She should have been back home by now but the house was in complete darkness. Nothing moved.
My eyebrows shot down in a scowl. Where the hell was she?
“And how is that going?”
“It’s going fine. Great in fact.”I didn’t look up from the phone.
Where was Audrey? A million thoughts rushed through my head. Each one of them worse than the one before.
Had something happened to her?
Was she hurt?
Had someone taken her.
“Is everything ok?” Reading my expression Alistair glanced down at the phone and frowned.
“Wow brother you really are going all stalker on her ass aren’t you. That’s not what I would call making contact. This isn’t ok Gabriel.”
“Ok so I’m working on it.” I gritted out. “She will come round. Where the fuck are you Audrey?” I muttered. Clicking on a few buttons I found the feed to the cameras at my house and my bedroom came into focus. Lit only by the light from the lamp by the bed.
She was curled up on my bed, my diary clutched to her chest and my blankets pulled up over her legs.
My heart soared. She was in my bed. In the bed we would one day share.
“Oh ok maybe it’s going better than I thought. That your girl Gabriel?”
Silently I nodded.
She was asleep in my bed, she felt safe there.
It just went to prove that Audrey was mine.
“She’s pretty.”
I killed the feed. I knew she was pretty but I didn’t need Alistair ogling her when she was sleeping.
“Yeah she’s beautiful.”
“Well I’m glad things are going well between you two because it’s going to make this next part easier.”
I whirled at him. “What does that mean?”
“I wanted to tell you before but Finn said after was best. It’s about my contact here. The one who told me about these girls.”
“What about him?”
“Not a him a her. Jasmine.”
“And?” I didn’t understand why any of this would stop me getting the next flight home and hopefully crawling into bed with my woman before dawn.
“She says she’s your sister.”
A shock wave snapped my spine straight. “I don’t have a sister.”
Alistair looked at me evenly. “You do now.”
