Chapter Ninety Seven
*Enzo*
After our talk I took myself back to the bed and laid there thinking heavily about what we were going to do next. Because one thing Dom was right about is Moretti wasn’t going to back down and he was definitely going to hit hard with something we may not have ever dealt with before.
My first priority was Gabriela. I needed her to be safe, needed her to be somewhere that Dario could never find her in case something horrible went wrong. She was the most important thing in my life right now and I will never forgive myself if something happens to her while facing Moretti. He’s going to want her back I knew that for sure, but I was going to make sure that never happened again.
And there was one sure way to do that where he wouldn’t be able to just take her from me. One sure way to keep her safe and to keep her with me for good. While marrying her would help solve one issue, it still wasn’t enough to keep Moretti back from doing whatever the hell he wanted.
But first, I needed to talk to Charlie.
The door creaks open and the doctor pokes his head in. Seeing me lying there he smiles and looks to Dom next.
“I see you boys are awake now. I thought I heard some whispers in here. I want to check on you both.” He walks over to me first pulling out a small pen like light. He frowns when he sees I no longer have the IV in my arm. Tsking in disproval he checks my eyes with the bright light.
“I also see you are disregarding your health. Your pupils look good. How’s your head feeling? Any dizziness, nausea, any vertigo going on?” He shoots out as he puts a hand behind my head and starts gently massaging.
“Just when I stood up earlier, no nausea though. It’s getting less out of focus and more steady.” I tell him truthfully.
He gives me a look as if deciding whether or not if I was lying to him. But he slightly nods his head. “Well your vitals are good and normal. You have a concussion and while I would love to tell you to stay in bed and get some rest for a few days, I know you can’t. But if you can give it a few more hours at least, you should be fine.”
I slowly nod at that. He grunts and heads over to Dom. “You on the other hand are suffering quite a few serious injuries. You have two black eyes which one of them is sealed shut, it’s swollen so bad. Hopefully there’s no permanent eye damage once healed. You also have two broken ribs along with a nice nasty bruise sporting it. You more than likely have a mild head concussion yourself.”
Hearing him say all that reconfirms my decision where Dario Moretti was concerned. The anger within me was sizzling to a near boiling point and I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t end up killing the bastard for doing the damage he did on my cousin who was more like a little brother to me.
“I’m fine. Nothing but a bit battered. I’ll heal in no time.” Dom grins at him.
The doctor just grunts at him as he too checks his pupils. When he tries to open the swollen eye Dom hisses and jerks making him stop. “I’ll need to get some pressure off that. I’ll bring you an ice pack.”
Just as he says this the door opens again and Charlie walks through looking at my cousin first then to me. “It’s good to see you both alive.” He deadpans.
“All thanks to you.” I state sincerely.
A sheepish look crosses his face as he comes to stand by me. “I could have handled things a lot better. You could have died by my mistake.”
“I could have died getting my head blown to pieces.” I retort back.
A small smile graces his lips as he shakes his head. “So what’s our next move?”
Sighing deeply I become serious in my answer. “We find out where my father and grandfather are at. Assess the situation with the men. Find out what Moretti’s next move is going to be and exactly how angry he is so I can find out if he’s as much as a lunatic as I think he is.”
“Oh, he’s definitely one crazy bastard.” Dom mumbles as the doctor finally finishes with him and takes his leave without another word.
“Did he say anything to you or mention anything while you were captive?” I ask him hoping we could use some kind of information that could help plan our next step.
“Nothing worth really mentioning to be honest. He was more boasting than giving any real kind of information we didn’t already know. He mentioned your dad and Nonno finding my location, but didn’t elaborate more than that.”
“How are we doing about locating them?” I ask Charlie.
“Well, I wished I had thought ahead and put a tracker on your grandfather, but I was preoccupied with other things, and it completely slipped my mind. Now I’m heavily regretting it.” He looked peeved with himself on that.
“But…” He continues, “I did hack into the security system of his hideout where he was keeping Domenico and discovered something oddly interesting.”
Crossing his arms he frowns deeply. “I saw your father’s vehicle pulling up to the first gate before suddenly veering to the right disappearing. I tried to follow with the cameras, but they ended up disappearing onto a dirt path that led to the forest. I found it odd that they suddenly changed paths knowing that your cousin was in there.”
My eyebrows furrow deeply hearing that. “Maybe he got warned?” I ask, wondering who would have warned him right before they were about to enter the compound.
“I thought of that too. But who would warn them when all his men were either with you or getting ready to ambush Dario with him and your grandfather? How would they even get tipped off when I had to seriously do some digging to discover Moretti’s true plan?”
“My father is no fool. It’s possible he felt like something was off and made the decision himself. Especially when it seemed way too easy to find Dom.” I supplied.
“But even so, he would have seen the explosion and found out that Dom was rescued. They’re nowhere around and I looked into your father’s security outlets and not even his men are anywhere around. Something’s not right about all this.”
“Has anyone tried calling his cell?” I ask instantly.
“I’ve been kind of busy with these injuries inflicted on me, that I haven’t had the time.” Dom sarcastically inputs.
Rolling my eyes I look to Charlie who was still frowning. “I have hacked into it and didn’t find anything because it’s dead. Your grandfather doesn’t even have a cell so he’s a dead end too.”
“What about Samual?” I ask, just now remembering that he was still here with us.
“I’ll go ask and see if he can get anywhere by calling any one of the guys.” Charlie starts to head out just as the door opens and Gabby comes in with a tray of food piled up.
“Charlie.” I quickly say before he disappears on me again.
He stops and looks over to me. “I need an update on Ivy. We can’t leave any loose ends ourselves.”
He nods, his lips turning thin. “Actually, I’ve already located her a few moments ago. I’m still looking into it, but I found out she hopped on a plane about an hour after her mother died.”
Gabby stops to look over at him with wide eyes. “You found Ivy? Where is she heading?”
He sighs looking displeased. “Apparently Italy. For what reason, I don’t know. But I’ll find out.” With that he leaves the room shutting the door behind him.
