Chapter 47
The scene in the hospital was in constant replay within Juliette’s mind. She wrapped her arms around herself and sighed deeply hoping the overwhelming despair lessened. This time she really got herself into trouble! She should have been professional with Blaze, shouldn’t have let him in. Emily entered the bed room and sat at the edge of the bed. She stared at Juliette in an obvious manner.
“How are you?” She asked the one question plaguing her mind. Emily and Juliette had been friends since high school. She was married but her husband worked out of the country a lot. He’d be home for a couple of weeks and then gone again. It was a hazard of his job but it was a small price to pay for love. Emily had less extravagant dreams than her husband. She was once an engineer but she’d given it up to allow for a family. Now she had a perfect flower shop where she’d even been responsible for floral arrangements for all sorts of functions.
Juliette looked at Emily. “I am fine; I think it was probably mild food poisoning.” Juliette commented.
“I wasn’t talking about your sudden illness.” She replied and a pair of icy blue eyes flashed across Juliette’s mind.
“That’s a subject I am not such how to approach.” Juliette answered truthfully.
“Does he know how you feel about him? Because from what you told me it sounds to me as if he more than just wanted you physically.” Emily responded.
Juliette shook her head, “Why should I tell him? He wouldn’t care any way. I am pretty sure he doesn’t want me Em.”
“Jewls-“They both stilled at the sound of Juliette’s ring tone. Juliette picked up the phone and answered cautiously.
“Miss Juliette, this is doctor Jorden. I have called to relate your test results.”
“Is anything wrong?” Juliette’s voice hitched a tone higher.
“No. You mustn’t think that! In fact its fabulous news, you are in fact very healthy.” He assured.
“Then why was I in such a state this morning?” Juliette grew confused.
“It’s because you are three weeks pregnant.” He responded happily. Juliette’s eyes melded with Emily’s in worry. Emily even more confused.
“There must be some mistake.” Juliette eased.
“Mistake? My dear not at all! I know of your condition but miracles do occur.” He sounded gaily and Juliette’s heart constricted. Pregnant? She’d tuned out and only managed to hear the doctor making an appointment for her to come in a couple of days later.
The call ended and Juliette dropped the phone soundlessly on the bed beside her. She looked out into a distant world and felt her body chill, she began to shake. Her body otherwise still her expression set in stone and this worried Emily.
“Juliette! Juliette?” She shook her slightly, a plea for her to speak to her.
Juliette locked gazes with her best friend, her vision clouded, her breathing escalated to what surpassed normalcy. “I-I I’m pre-“
Emily’s eyes widened and she engulfed Juliette in a comforting hug. “You’re pregnant?” She whispered and felt Juliette nod against her shoulder.
It’s been a couple of days since she found out about her pregnancy and now she was determined to do whatever it took to ensure this was a successful one. Leaving her appointment the doctor had told her it was too early to ensure success seeing that her case was a special one.
“Juliette?” She turned to see Jonathon, she smiled and welcomed his company.
“How are you?” She asked.
“Fine. You? Is everything alright?” he asked nervously, his eyes committing the image of the hospital in his mind.
Juliette smiled. “I am just fine!”
“Jonathon? I thought you’d never arrive!” They both spun around to look at Juliette’s doctor, Mr Jorden. The kind doctor looked between them and smiled. “I didn’t know you were acquainted with my nephew, Miss Juliette.”
Juliette looked at Jonathon, “We worked together. I am really sorry but I must be going. Jonathon. Doctor.” Juliette responded politely and left.
Jonathon looked after her, something was off about her. He’d known Juliette for a couple of years. She was like a younger sister to him and he felt that responsibility when he saw how dispirited she appeared.
“Uncle, is everything alright with her?” Jonathon asked.
“With Miss Juliette?” The doctor inquired and Jonathon nodded.
“She is perfectly fine! Well as fine as an expecting mother would be!” His uncle exclaimed in joy.
Jonathon turned his gaze to where she was walking before. Juliette pregnant? He felt a sense of pride and happiness for her. He didn’t even know she was seeing someone, but he was sure the news was a joyous one.
Blaze sat at his desk, he wasn’t sure but he swore his employees were avoiding him even more than usual. He’d grown more arrogant with the loss of Juliette and it appeared that people preferred to stay away from him. He continued to view his files the action for the first time seeming worthless. For the first time all the money and fame he collected over the years lost its appeal.
He was interrupted by a steady knock. “Come in.” The door eased open and Jonathon walked through carrying more files and Blaze had the urge to set them on fire!
“I have completed the accounts.” He rested then on Blaze’s desk and when Blaze hadn’t said a word he took it as his cue to leave.
“Oh I thought you’d want to know.” Jonathon spun around to look at Blaze who still hadn’t looked at him. “Juliette’s doing fine.”
This caught Blaze; he raised his head in an agonizingly slow movement until his icy eyes met Jonathon. “Excuse me?”
“Well I hadn’t seen her around in a while and when I found out about the baby I realise you must’ve given her time off.” Jonathon elaborated.
Blaze still hadn’t announced Juliette’s resignation; part of him hoped she would change her mind. Then it clicked the sentence Jonathon gifted.
“Baby?” Blaze echoed.
“Yes I recently found out about her pregnancy.” Jonathon spoke and anxiously looked at his watch. “I have to go, I have a meeting in a few minutes.”
He was then dismissed by a wave of Blaze’s hand. He was too stunned to speak.
Juliette was pregnant? How? Most importantly, was he going to be a father? The idea did strange things to him, but then confusion held him. Why didn’t she tell him?
Pregnant? The word still seemed foreign to him. Could it be true?
