Chapter 91: Been busy
Thomas found Scar Face near the west wing just as the afternoon sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the stone walkway. He had been looking for him for over an hour, irritation tightening his jaw with every step.
When he finally spotted the familiar build and calm stride, relief mixed sharply with frustration.
“There you are,” Thomas said, closing the distance quickly. “Where the hell have you been?”
Scar Face stopped and turned slowly, his expression unreadable. “Looking for me?”
“I’ve been all over the place,” Thomas replied. “I needed you.”
Scar Face studied his face for a moment. “You look like someone who found trouble.”
Thomas let out a short laugh. “Trouble found me. On the farm.”
Scar Face’s eyes sharpened. “What kind of trouble?”
Thomas lowered his voice instinctively. “I stumbled on something underground. A hidden access point.”
Scar Face straightened slightly. “An underground?”
“Yes,” Thomas said. “Perfectly concealed. Steel door. Digital keypad.”
Scar Face didn’t interrupt, but his focus intensified.
“I tried cracking it,” Thomas continued. “But it needs a code. I’ve already used some attempts. There are only three tries left before it locks permanently.”
Scar Face frowned. “You didn’t tell anyone else?”
“What sort of stupid question is that?” Thomas said firmly. “Not yet. I came to you first. But I will soon start telling everyone!!!”
Scar Face laughed then stepped closer. “Jokes apart, what makes you think it’s important?”
Thomas exhaled slowly. “Because it’s hidden under the farm, Uncle Scar. Because someone went through a lot of trouble to make sure no one ever finds it. And because my gut tells me whatever’s down there isn’t small.”
Scar Face was quiet for a few seconds. “Did you notice anything else? Symbols? Patterns? Anything near the keypad?”
“I looked,” Thomas said. “Nothing obvious. That’s why I need you. You notice things I don’t.”
Scar Face nodded once. “Alright. We’ll talk more about this later. Not here.”
Thomas frowned. “Later? Uncle Scar, this could…”
“I said later,” Scar Face cut in calmly. “Walls listen.”
Thomas clenched his jaw but nodded. “Fine. But we don’t have much time.”
“I know,” Scar Face replied. “And I don’t ignore instincts.”
They were interrupted by approaching footsteps.
Scar Face looked up first.
Audrey had just entered the mansion grounds with Willa by her side. Audrey pushed with her usual composed stride, sunglasses still on despite being indoors now. Willa followed closely, her posture slightly tense, eyes moving cautiously as she took in her surroundings.
Scar Face’s gaze lingered on Willa.
He didn’t stare openly, but he noticed her, the way she walked, the way she held herself, alert yet restrained. His eyes narrowed slightly, as if committing her presence to memory.
Thomas noticed the shift. “You know her?”
“No,” Scar Face said quietly. “But I will.”
Audrey stopped briefly to speak to one of the staff, giving instructions without removing her glasses. Willa stood silently beside her.
That was when Tennessee appeared.
“Audrey,” he called gently, stepping toward her. “I heard you were back. How are you holding up?”
Audrey told Will not to even slow down.
Willa pushed Audrey past him as if he didn’t exist.
Tennessee turned, stunned. “Audrey?”
Willa kept walking, heels clicking sharply against the floor, disappearing down the hallway.
She hesitated, glancing back at Tennessee with an apologetic look before attending to Audrey.
Tennessee stood there, hands at his sides, frustration and concern flickering across his face.
Scar Face watched the entire scene silently.
“Cold,” Thomas muttered.
Scar Face said nothing.
From the upper floor, partially hidden behind the railing, Yvonne leaned forward slightly, observing the scene below. Her eyes found Scar Face almost immediately.
She smiled.
Slowly, deliberately, she lifted her hand and winked at him.
Scar Face looked up just in time to catch it.
Their eyes met.
Her smile widened, confident and knowing.
Scar Face’s expression didn’t change, but something unreadable passed through his eyes.
Yvonne turned and disappeared back into the corridor upstairs, still smiling to herself.
Thomas followed Scar Face’s gaze. “Seems you’ve been busy.”
Scar Face finally looked away. “Focus.”
Thomas sighed. “Right. The underground.”
Scar Face nodded. “We’ll handle it. But carefully.”
The mansion buzzed faintly with movement, people passing, conversations murmuring but beneath it all, tension settled quietly, waiting.
