Chapter 56 Lucky Girl
Nami couldn't stop sighing after learning a fact she still found hard to believe. Levi was her adoptive father? She didn't know what crazy thing Levi Sanders couldn't do?
He was only 25 years old, but he already had a 19-year-old adopted daughter who was more suited to being his little sister or girlfriend than his daughter.
Seeing Nami's constant strange behavior and constant sighing made Lea and Sydney start to feel uneasy. Nami had met Professor Levi, someone she had missed so much, today, and instead of looking happy and excited, she looked utterly depressed.
"Nami, what happened to you? Come on, you met Professor Levi today, shouldn't you be happy?" Lea blurted out, annoyed by the gloomy atmosphere in their room.
"I have a question to you, guys!" She said. It was hard to say. But she felt like she couldn't keep this burden to herself.
"What's wrong?" Lea and Sydney asked simultaneously. They had been waiting for Nami to speak.
"How would you feel if someone you admired so much turned out to be your own father?"
"What do you mean?" Lea began to feel uneasy, but Nami immediately fell silent and stopped asking.
"Levi is my father."
"WHAT...?" Lea and Sydney screamed hysterically at the crazy confession that came out of her mouth.
"I really can't believe this!"
"What are you saying, Nami? Are you saying that Professor Levi is your father?" Lea asked aggressively and intensely.
Nami took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. She recalled her conversation with Levi earlier today, and it made her feel sad.
"S-since you're my adoptive father, w-we're still not related by blood, right?"
"Of course not!"
"T-that means in the future, I might become someone other than a daughter to you and-"
"That can't be!"
"W-what?"
"You're already registered as my daughter, and that's legally valid. Because you're a child without biological parents and grew up in an orphanage, I can't remove or revoke my name from your identity documents. If I do, you'll no longer have an official identity and your status will be reduced to that of an undocumented citizen, making it difficult for you to obtain employment and other rights."
"B-but I-" She couldn't continue. It felt like she would forever regard Levi as someone she deeply respected. Remembering their conversation today made her want to cry.
"Nami? What's wrong? Why are you silent? Tell us what really happened?" Sydney asked. She was worried because Nami looked so disappointed.
"Levi is my father, my adoptive father."
"Your adoptive father? How is that possible?"
"When I was 13, Levi adopted me without my knowledge. I was born and raised in the Everdeen Orphanage on the outskirts of Hellenes City. Children in orphanages are unable to have legal identities, unless they are adopted by a family, who gives them a new family name and identity that allows them access to education, healthcare, and good jobs. Without legal identification and legal guardians, we were worthless children in the orphanage, who could easily be dismissed without anyone caring."
"Nami?"
"I always thought I would never be accepted by anyone, and my dreams of having a family crumbled as I got older. But strangely enough, I went to a good school and found work easily, even though I ended up getting fired. It turned out it was all because I had been Levi's daughter since I was 13. He secretly gave me his family name, and strangely enough, he kept it a secret from me for years."
"You said that Professor Levi was the one who helped you every time you got into trouble, right? Maybe because he was the one responsible for your life," Lea said. Hearing this made Nami feel very sorry because she had always been a troublemaker for Levi.
"Yes, Levi always looks for me if I don't come home."
"It must be because he loves you so much, Nami!" Sydney said. She put her hand on Nami's shoulder, trying to convince her that she was lucky.
"I'm just sad that he only told me now. I've always burdened him with all the problems I've caused. Even though many people opposed me, Levi never gave up on me." Nami's eyes welled up with tears, remembering Levi's kindness, which made her feel unworthy of expecting more.
"You're so lucky!" Lea said. She sighed and sat down at her desk with her arms folded across her chest.
"Lucky?"
"Hey, who wouldn't want a father like Professor Levi Sanders? You know how rich he is, right? The Sanders family is known as one of the richest families in the world, and Professor Levi Sanders is among the top 10 richest people in the world. Can you two imagine? He's so young, yet he's already that rich. So, why are you so gloomy? You're the daughter of a very wealthy scientist, you should be grateful for that, Nami!"
