Chapter 50 - Far cry
“Alpha?” I groaned internally but for some reason I feel too tired to open my eyes. There is only pain. My head, my chest . . . burning pain. My side, my arm. Pain. Pain and hushed words in the gloom. Where am I? Though I try, I cannot open my eyes. The whispered words become clearer . . . a beacon in the darkness.
“His left and right ribs are severely bruised and he had a hairline fracture at the right side of the skull but he is healing faster and most of his injuries are already healed.
“Then why is he still unconscious?”
“He will wake when he is ready. Just give him some time.”
“Any news on Miss Rockwood?” The words were anguished, breathless.
“I can’t find her. I don’t know where she is, I tried the finding spell but as if she is totally disappeared from the world.” Now, I recognized that voice. it was Diana’s. the former one was of Asher’s.
Who is missing? Where is Esma? why did I want to hear her voice so badly?
I try in vain to move my hand in response to their voices to catch their attention, in hope they would see I could listen what they were talking. Nothing moves, nothing responds.
Everything is heavy and aching: limbs, head, eyelids, nothing will move. My eyes and mouth are resolutely shut, unwilling to open, leaving me blind and mute and aching. As I surface from the fog, consciousness hovers, a seductive siren just out of reach. Sounds become voices.
“Ravenna took her.” it was Dumeny. Dumeny. It was no doubt it was his voice. He is here. But he was with Esma. she took her. I will myself to move- his voice was strained, agonized whisper.
Dammit. I need to see Emmy. But this darkness, I can’t see anything.
“How can you let her go like that?” August growled his voice cracked finally.
“She had the rogues right under her palm, she got the blade, all of it was planned and we didn’t find it until we were right caught under her trap.” Dumeny's voice was resigned at last.
The darkness encloses my senses again. I feel the long non-existing wall of darkness before me and her. no matter how much I tried it keep pushing me back two steps from her. I feel incomplete, like before.
I open my eyes and looked around. It took me few seconds to realize I was not in the hotel room. I was in my room. I was back in the castle. It’s dark except for a sidelight, and all is quiet. My head and my chest ache, my pulse beats faster than before, trying to adjust or bearing the overbearing pain of my body.
I looked around to see if anyone was here. The curtains were shielding the window making it impossible for me to predict the time. there is not a clock in my room. dammit.
I test my limbs. My right arm smarts, and I notice the IV attached to it on the inside of my elbow. I shut my eyes quickly. Turning my head—I’m pleased that it responds to my will—I open my eyes again.
“Anyone…” I croaked harshly; my mouth dry as desert. No one responds to my calls. I tried three times. still, no one comes to my heed. I carefully tried my right hand to move and winced just when I bend it further to touch my chest.
I closed my eyes and removed the IV and other wires from my body. I take a good look at my abdomen; the wounds were healed leaving the scars to tell the story.
My heads spins as I tried to remember the last time before coming to my death bed. I was with Asher, we were hesding to no mans’ land. But the car crash.
I winced in pain as I put down. My whole body hurts as if I was wrecked by the truck. Literally.
I tried to sit and winced. I closed my eyes and the vague memory of Ravenna comes in my mind.
“Don’t worry about Esma. I will take good care of her.” her words hits with full force. The car crash, Esma? the attack? I tried to remember the words of Asher and Diana.
They took her. I touched the cold floor hurriedly and moved only to face fall on the ground. my feet hurts. I should be totally healed by now dammit. For how long I was out?
I gripped my hair while my chest hurt while I was trying to regain my breathing. What’s going on? My body is refusing my every will to move.
I crumbled as I pushed myself on the floor and make my way out to the room. they took her. I gripped the sidebar as if my life depends on it and once again I forced my feet to stand.
I want to scream. Yell. Call out for help but at the moment my body could condust only one task at a time. surprisingly, my knees didn’t failed me thins time. I carefully yet slowly gain my consciousness and walked down the stairs.
I can’t sense anyone in the castle. Was It really m imagination? I don’t know if I was hallucinating their voices but I am pretty damn sure I saw Ravenna.
I open the door and as soon as the moonlight hit my face I run.
My vision was going blurry. The air seemed thin in here. Thinner than inside. Or maybe my lungs were too weak for my body. I don’t understand why? I wanted to cry out for help but I was trying to breathe.
I run and run in the direction of no man’s land. I didn’t care less if anyone sees me in this pathetic state. I don’t give a flying shit if anyone comes in my way. I want to see her. Emmy. My mate. I coughed.
I fall on my knees again while my hands stopped me from falling this time. I gasp as my hand claws at the ground for support.
My heart as if couldn’t take it anymore finally burst and all the pent-up emotions, I thought I long buried inside me. my insides burns, the tears from my eyes were the living remanence of them.
I feel a gentle touch on my shoulder behind and all the tears I have been holding comes with a full force. “Where is she Diana?” my voice croaked pathetically and I turned back to look at her.
“I can’t sense her.” I finally gathered all the power of my tethering body and look up. Her eyes were also glim with tears. She hugged me but didn’t say anything. I cried and cried in her arms till my eyes dried of tears.
