Chapter 28 Shock and delight ✨🎀
Callum walks into the office from the elevator, his phone in his hand still trying to reach out to Sophia or Martins and Mira, but none of their lines was still going through. They were greetings and bows as he walks past his workers, none of interest to him. His mind was in turmoil.
If he was right, the investors were already here and waiting. Damn being right, he had seen their vehicles in the parking lot. They were here. Callum gulps just as he begins to dial Sophia’s phone line again, getting the same response again that it was off.
“Good morning, Sir.” His secretary greets rushing over to meet him halfway even before he gets to his office. He gets his briefcase from him.
“I know they are here. Just … stall them … buy me some time.” He says turning around and beginning to walk away again. “I just need to reach out to my wife and –
“She is here, Sir.” His Secretary tells him.
Callum stops and turns around to face his secretary at his words. “What?” he questions, quite unsure if he had heard well.
“Your wife, Mrs. Sophia, she is here, Sir. She arrived –
Callum walks past his secretary heading in haste towards his office. “When did she come?” he asks
“About an hour ago, Sir. She-
Callum storms towards his office and throws the door open and there, seated on the sofa by the right hand corner of his office was she. Callum gulped just as his eyes landed on her and his steps slowed. He begins to take slow steps towards her, his eyes not leaving her. “Sophia –
“Oh, here you are.” It was the broker who spoke.
And for the first time, Callum turns to take note of them seated in front of his desk, their face turned towards Sophia, and they all had a serious look on their faces. Callum gulps, looking at Sophia who was not looking at him, and then looking back at all the investors in the room. He could feel the blood draining from his face. What has she told them?
“We were beginning to think we may have to wait all day for you to recover from the aftereffects of your wedding day, Callum. Your wife seems to have recovered from it quicker than you have.” One of the investors says with a smile.
Callum parts his lips to say something, but he found himself unable to utter any word.
“Oh, we woke up together. He just … had something to attend to … to get for me if I must be honest, before heading down here.” Sophia says with a smile on her face when she looks up at him and finds him unable to utter a single word in his defense. He may not be as smart as she had first thought. She smiles at the investors even more brightly. “I had him go get me my favorite burger from my favorite restaurant when we got here. It is his first task as my husband on our first morning as husband and wife.” Sophia says, reducing her voice to almost a whisper in the last sentence, but still loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
Every one of the investors burst out laughing as they all turn to look at Callum before looking back at Sophia who joins them to laugh as though it was the most natural thing to do.
“And were you able to get it, Mr. Kennington? I assure you, you do not want to start on the wrong foot with these women when you are married to them.” One of the investors says, then he raised his left hand up showing his ring to Callum. “I got married two months ago, so I know what I am telling you.” The rest of them laugh again.
“Were you able to get it, honey?” Sophia asks, looking up at him for more than a second since he entered the room.
Callum gulps, his mind taking in the event in front of him. She was here. Sophia was here, she was not gone, she was here in his office, trying to help him still secure the deal. Callum sighs mentally, thanking all the gods that have existed in the world. How had he been so lucky with this masterpiece of his?
“Honey,” Sophia calls again when she notices him still unable to say a word. Slowly, she rises to her feet and heads towards him. She walks forward and stops right in front of him, barely leaving any space between them. She leans towards him, putting her lips next to his ear. “I have been busy keeping them company while you were running late for whatever reason for yours. Now if you don’t say something, we might actually ruin all that effort.” She says to him with a smile beginning to pull away.
Callum immediately wraps his hands around her waist and pulls her back closer to himself. Her scent assaulted his nose in the process. She smelled lovely, as always.
“Don’t you dare –
“Shh!” he whispers at her stopping her from trying to pull away. “Do not take this personally.” He says to her. His voice was barely above a whisper, but loud enough for only her to hear him.
“I will not have you taking –
“Public display of affection was included in the deal.” He reminds her.
“Fine, and that’s all you get. Know your boundaries. Do not make me regret coming here this morning.” She says to him.
At her words, he pulls back slowly and stares at her, and he could see it in her eyes that she meant the word. He gulps, then slowly hugs her and places a kiss on her neck. “Fine. We will choose that penthouse suite you wanted then, honey. You have earned it.” Callum says loudly enough for everyone else to hear, letting go of her and walking away, heading for his desk. “Gentlemen.” He says to the investors and broker with a smile to convince them that things are fine. Things were not fine. He was far from being fine. He was riled up, just from merely being so close to her for the last few minutes. Every part of him was riled up and he would want nothing more but to grab her and …
Callum stops his train of thoughts, shaking his head mentally to rid himself of the very thoughts. It would never happen between them, they would never be intimate. Not after how he messed things up. There may have been a chance for that to happen yesterday, but today, such a possibility was gone with the wind.
“We were beginning to think we may have to give you two the room for some minutes.” The broker says and the others laugh, nodding their heads in agreement. “The desires and inability to detach from each other for newlyweds, I think we all understand it.” he says.
Callum smiles at them, his eyes going back to Sophia who has still not moved from where she stood, where he had left her, since he walked away. He looks away from her and back at the men in front of him. “I would appreciate that, but no. The faster we are done with this deal and you are all gone, the better it would be for the both of us, my wife and I that is, to get going on our honeymoon. So …” he takes his seat. “Shall we?”
