Chapter Sixty Two
Chapter Sixty Two
Michael POV
As I disembark the small jet, I see the black Tahoe waiting for me. Antonio steps out, waves his hand and gets back inside. My men unload and follow, one climbing in with me and the rest rushing towards the entrance to the terminal from the tarmac. I glance over and see that the plane that Thomas Cain was on is at its gate. I assume they are still disembarking but can't know for sure.
I climbed into the passenger seat and nod at Antonio. "Let's follow around to the front of the building. Jack should be calling me any minute with an update."
"Sure," Antonio puts the SUV in gear and follows the orange cones that indicate the route that a car is supposed to follow to leave the tarmac.
"How's Camilla?" I ask, knowing he'd been spending a lot of time at the hospital.
"She seems to be recovering. I didn't actually speak to her or enter her room." I nod and look out the window, watching as he steers the car around to the arrival lane.
My phone vibrates in my pocket, and I take it out to see that Jack is calling. "Yeah," I answer.
"I've got eyes on him. Lower level near baggage claim. Looks like two of his guys are with him, they must have been here waiting at baggage claim. I didn't see them on the flight," Jack's voice is hushed.
"There should be a car outside waiting for you," I tell him. "Carmine set it up," I glance over at Antonio, and he nods to confirm. "Black Tahoe." Antonio nods again.
"I'm going to follow behind and see where they go, we are near exit 4 of the terminal. I would think they'd walk outside here, don't you?"
"Probably. We will park to the back of the arrivals, wait and see what goes down and follow. Let me know if they get into a vehicle," I tell him. "Try to catch the plate."
"Right," Jack hangs up.
I dial John, "Where are you?", I say before he says anything else.
"Escalator to baggage claim, following Cain's bodyguard that came off a separate flight. Jack has Cain in sight. Do you want me to follow this guy or link up with Jack?"
"Follow but be discreet. I think they know what you look like, but they don't know Jack." Jack was one of my men who flew into Chicago after all the shit went down, I sent him to the airport because he was an easy one to conceal, since none of Cains men have seen him before.
Antonio snickers next to me and I turn to him with a glare as I disconnect the call. "Something funny?" I ask.
"They don't know Jack." He shrugs. I hear a guffaw from the backseat, and I can't help but smile too.
"Alright," I say. "Very funny."
He slides his SUV in behind a lifted red pickup towards the end of the line, but hangs back enough that we can see around the truck.
Antonio picks up his cell and dials. "I have him. Everyone needs to be in place." I sit and watch him with eyes narrowed. "You take orders from Jimmy if you can't reach the boss." Then he hangs up and looks over at me. "One of the SUV's," he points to a grey one with dark tinted windows that rolls by us slowly, "driver says he was supposed to pick up someone and when he tried to confirm with Nick, he got no answer. Jimmy told him to keep his ass here and do what the boss told him earlier today." He shrugs. "One of the bosses' henchmen was trying to direct him elsewhere. We take orders from the Don or from Jimmy. No one else."
Right. I face forward, watching as people rush by, eyes peeled for a potential threat. My phone vibrates with a message. It's from Jack. Black Town Car, plate 437BBX. Outside exit 4.
I flash the screen at Antonio, and he pulls out, rolling up towards exit 4. We watch as Cain and two other guys that I don't recognize load into the town car. Jack spots us when I roll the window down halfway and walks over and climbs in the back seat.
"John," I growl into the phone, "We've got him. Stay on this bodyguard. There's a grey SUV with dark tinted windows to pick you up curbside, parked outside exit 6," I say this as I look over my shoulder to confirm what door I saw the grey SUV Antonio indicated. "Wait to see what he does, and you follow." I disconnect and give Antonio a nod as the town car begins to pull away and we follow behind at a respectable distance.
The traffic is unbearable in this city. "I don't know why my sister wanted to live in this fucking city," I mumble as Antonio weaves between cars, a hair from every bumper he squeezes behind.
Antonio laughs, "Like Chicago is better. Or Vegas for that matter."
"Vegas is better," I say with a grunt. "A lot fucking better."
I glance in the side mirror and see several other SUV's doing exactly what we are. "They with you?" I ask Antonio.
He glances in his rearview mirror. "Yeah, the two black Tahoe's and that white Mercedes with the dark tint."
"Who the hell drives the Mercedes?" I ask.
"That's Jimmy's car, I'm guessing he's planning to peel off in case he's got to follow the town car, because it's less conspicuous. Boss's orders." It makes sense I suppose. I'd think in a city like this though, no one would pay any mind to SUVs with dark tint. Too many diplomats and important people trying to hide out in plain sight here.
"Do we have some place we can take this guy?" I ask. "Don't want to just kill him in front of a bunch of people who can then identify us, and I'm not one for killing innocent people either."
"Warehouse," Antonio says. Suddenly he slams on the brakes and hits the horn. "Shit, shit, shit."
"What the fuck," I say. I look up to see the black town car that had been only a couple cars ahead of us break off an exit, cutting off several people in the process and nearly colliding with a concrete barrier. "Did he make us?"
Antonio is on his phone, barking at someone, not paying me any mind. The grey SUV whizzes past us on my right and cuts into traffic, taking the same exit. "How the fuck do you people drive in this shit?" I ask.
Antonio whips out of the traffic, rolls down his window and flips off the car in front of us, then takes the exit. He hits the gas, flying up on the grey SUV. When I look behind us, the white Mercedes is there. "Where is the other black SUV?" I ask.
"Following Cain's bodyguards, or at least one we could identify by sight. They took a different exit," he says. Horns are honking and we are flying.
Antonio makes a sharp left and then comes to a stop. There is the grey SUV that holds Jack inside, and the white Mercedes. Stopped. Waiting for a train to cross. I watch as Jimmy climbs out of the car, resting his arm on the roof and looks around like he's trying to find an alternate route. He slams his fist on the roof of his car and turns towards us. "We fucking lost them," he yells. "Fuck!"
I take a deep breath. We still have the hope that John is still following the bodyguards. Finding these guys in this city won't be easy if they choose not to be found. "Take me to my sister's apartment," I suddenly tell Antonio. "I'm going to stay there. I have an idea."
"What idea is that?" he asks.
"I imagine they have been watching her place, so it shouldn't be that hard for us to find them. I just have to sit and wait."
"We have a guy there already," he offers. "Daniel. Lives in the apartment two floors down."
"Well, they expect to see him; he lives there. They may not even realize he's one of your guys, but my point is, they will be watching, and if they are watching, I'm going to see them. And when I see them, I'm going to find out where that fucker is. Once and for all, this is going to be done."
Antonio nods, throws the car in reverse, backing down the street. He narrowly misses another car before throwing the SUV in drive and squealing his tires as he speeds off in another direction. These guys drive like they have a death wish.
