CHAPTER EIGHTY-FIVE
CHAPTER EIGHTY-FIVE
Alexis POV
I wasn’t wasting any time with making the calls I needed to make to find out what Sarah had been doing with herself in the past 20 years.
I know Jericho didn’t approve but I wasn’t taking any chances with her.
Especially when I know that Cassie could end up getting hurt.
That was a risk I wasn’t going to take.
I walked out of the room and left Cassie and Jericho to it.
I knew that they needed their privacy.
Jericho had a look on his face that told me as much.
Plus, I had work to do.
I dialled the only man I knew would be best for the task at hand.
The phone rang through after a moment.
A grisly voice picked up.
“Fred.”
“Alexis.”
“I have a job for you.”
“I need you to find out everything you can about a Miss Sarah Masters.”
“Father Dennis Masters works security in the Hamptons.”
“I want to know everything from the past 20 years.”
“And Fred, make it snappy this is time sensitive.”
I hung up just as quickly as I made the call.
There wasn’t any need for pleasantries.
My family had been dealing with Fred for years.
He was all business.
Not one for conversation.
Which was best in his line of work.
I’m sure he would have the information I needed fast enough.
As I turned to head back into the room, I heard the front door close.
I walked into the room to see Cassie hugging herself.
“Jericho left?”
“Seems abit of a weird time to leave but ok.”
She looks at me, tears in her eyes.
“What’s wrong?”
“Did he upset you?”
“That fucking prick I told him if he ever hurt you, I’d kill him.”
I turned to chase after him.
Give him a piece of my mind when…
“No Lex.”
“It’s not Jericho’s fault.”
Cassie’s voice stopped me in my tracks.
“It’s just a lot you know.”
I slowly walk back into the room towards her.
“I know.”
“But I’ve got my best guy on it.”
“Don’t worry Cass we’ll find out why Sarah’s back and what she wants.”
She nods.
And then starts to giggle.
“What’s so funny.”
I ask her.
“The fact that you have a guy.”
She carries on giggling.
“When did you become a secret agent.”
This made me laugh.
“Well, when you have money and people around you try to get at you for that money, it’s nice to make sure their the right people in your life.”
She looked at me with worry in her eyes.
“Did you have to use your guy on me?”
She asked innocently.
I looked at her but couldn’t answer.
It wasn’t the fact that it was a stupid question.
Or that I actually never used Fred to find out about Cassandra.
It was the fact that the thought had never even crossed my mind.
“Lex…”
I was brought out of my thoughts.
“Hmm.”
“Did you?”
I shook my head.
“Never.”
“Promise.”
She smiled a little.
A little relieved I presumed.
“So, where did Jericho run off to?”
She sat down.
“Back to the office.”
“He had some business to take care of.”
Yeah, sounds about right.
I thought.
Work always came first with Jericho.
But these last few days I had seen a different side of him.
And he does seem genuinely concerned about this whole Sarah situation and what it could mean for Cassandra.
Maybe there was hope for him after all.
Cassie POV
Jericho leaving left me with a sense of loneliness.
I told Alexis I was going upstairs to lay down.
My mind was spinning I needed to rest it.
She told me that she was going to make a few more calls and that she would catch up with me later.
As I watched her leave the room with a look on her face that told me she was enjoying what she was doing.
I turned towards the stairs and headed up.
This day was draining me, and I needed it to be over with.
By any luck Alexis, Jericho and Alex might be able to pull something together and find out why she was really making a comeback.
As I was fathoming the outcome that would soon be presented to us, I walked into my room and headed straight to my bed.
I needed to sleep so badly but just as I was about to find comfort in my bed my cell started to ring.
“Argh.”
“Why can’t I just get a break.”
I cried as I grab for my cell to answer for it.
Without even looking at the caller I.D. I answer.
“What now.”
Big mistake.
“Hmhm.”
“Is this miss Knox?”
I knew straight away by the voice on the phone who it was.
“Yes, sorry this is Miss Knox.”
“This is Mr McCormick.”
Great start Cass.
“Yes sir, I know.”
“What can I do for you?”
“I was just wondering if it was possible for you to come down to the office and fill out some forms for HR before your start on Monday morning.”
Of course.
When I want to rest something always comes up.
But I couldn’t tell Mr McCormick that.
“Sure, thing sir.”
“I’ll be there within the hour.”
Despite my body screaming at me no.
“Great news, see you soon.”
“Bye.”
“Bye Mr McCormick.”
And then the call ended.
As I put my cell down and started to get ready to head over to McCormick Publishing’s all I wanted to do was sleep.
I looked at my bed with a longing look.
My body aching to be in it.
My mind screaming at me to rest.
But I knew that wasn’t an option right now.
I left my bedroom with anguish and headed on down the stairs.
Alexis must have heard me because her head popped out of her room.
“Where you off too I thought, you were going to rest.”
I turned back to her.
“Yeah, change of plans.”
“Mr McCormick wants me over at the office fill in some paperwork with HR.”
She came out of her room fully.
“Oh yeah, with everything going on I totally forgot about your new job.”
“Yeah, to be honest so did I.”
We both laugh.
“Anything on Sarah?”
I ask.
I don’t know why I thought it would be done so quick, but something told me that Lexi had a few tricks up her sleeve.
“Nothing concrete yet but as soon as I do, you’ll be the first person I tell fuck Jericho or Alex.”
I laugh even more so at her reply.
“Thanks, I guess.”
She laughs more also.
“Well, I have to get going see you later?”
“For sure.”
I wave to her.
Head down the rest of the stairs and out the front door on the way to my new job.
