"I frowned at what Anne said. Is he Scott? Did Kayler and he know each other? Were they friends? Kayler was very smiley with the guy, they were like at some kind of barbecue, behind them you could see Kayler's group of friends and an older man, maybe Kayler's father. There was also a girl looking at Scott and Kayler with a frown. It seemed she didn't like them being friends much.
"Scott and Kayler were friends?" I asked, standing up.
"Yes, they were very close friends," she replied. "Scott's mom must have forgotten about that photo," she commented.
Poor Scott. Who would've thought he would die so young and in such a cruel way. He wasn't bad-looking. What a shame.
"Let's go," Anne grabbed my elbow.
"Should we take her?" I inquired.
She hesitated for a moment.
"I don't know."
We went up to my room and I left the picture on my nightstand where last night my photo was that stupid Kayler took; Why would he want a picture of me? Is he going to cast a spell on me?
Just stupid thoughts.
"Girls, what are you doing up there?" Mom's voice rang out.
We went downstairs and headed to the dock where Mike and mom were pushing the small boat into the water, until they succeeded. We approached them.
"Here they are," Anne says, handing fishing rods to mom.
I observed Kayler's house, there was activity outside; they were setting up a grill and placing chairs, just like I had seen in the photograph. A barbecue. All of Kayler's friends were there and Paige's friends, but there was no sign of him.
"Put these on," she said, handing us life jackets. I took mine.
"Is this necessary?" I questioned. Mom and Mike were already done putting theirs on. Anne just shrugged and started putting hers on too.
"Yes, anything can happen out in the depths of the lake. Plus, I feel better knowing we're protected," she replied.
Mike found the oars and helped mom into the boat. They had a small bucket in the boat with some weird stuff. Is it bait?
"Look who came out over there," Anne purred, looking in the direction of Kayler's house.
I looked too. There he was with... Paige kept walking.
"Come on, girls, get in," mom urges.
I took Anne's hand and we started climbing into the small boat. I was nervous. We sat in the middle, while Mike began rowing towards the center of the lake.
"This will be fun!" Mom exclaimed.
I smiled, raising my eyebrows. Anne did too.
"Oh, now we're the center of attention," Anne whispers.
I look towards Kayler's house. Everyone there, including him, is looking at us amused. Some whistle and mom just waves at them. How ridiculous we must look with these life jackets.
"Well, we're here," Mike says, stopping rowing and looking for the bucket with the fishing rods.
We were in the middle of the lake, in front of Kayler's house, it looked bigger from here. And it's obvious that they don't let us see and murmur things. Now I think it was a bad idea to come... But you know what? I don't care, we're going to have fun, period.
I stood up and dragged Anne with me. The boat moved a bit, causing us to stop abruptly.
"Careful," mom says, handing me a fishing rod.
"I don't know how," I confess, wrinkling my nose at a dead smell. Ah, it's the bait that Mike is taking out.
"It's easy, you just have to hold it and wait for a fish to bite the hook, then you just pull," Mike explains.
Mike threw the bait into the lake and also put some on the hook of our rods. The four of us sat there waiting for a cute little fish to be caught.
Every now and then I glanced at Kayler, he was watching me. We had several minutes like that until I felt the rod move and then we all stood up immediately.
"I think I got one!" I said.
"Pull, Carolina, pull!" mom says.
That's what I do. I think it's a big one.
"I'll help you," Anne helps me get the damn fish out but nothing.
Mike and mom joined in to help us, but the more we pulled, the more resistant it became.
"It's not working!" I shouted.
I think we were the center of attention because all the guys were looking at us, but the incredible thing is that they gave words of encouragement for what we could catch.
In the boat it was chaos, I think I was dizzy from so much movement, Mike pulling from one side, mom from the other, Anne alongside me and my hands were already hurting.
"Don't move so much, we're going to fall!" Anne screams. I think she can't swim either.
"Get that fish out, don't let it beat you!" someone shouted. The four of us in the boat turned to see who shouted. It was a man, I think it's Kayler's dad. The guys behind nodded and Kayler just laughed.
Damn him. He'll pay.
We kept at it but the rod slipped from our hands, falling into the water. The movement made us lose our balance and we fell into the water.
"Aahh!" Anne and I screamed in unison.
I submerged quite deep from the fall but then I surfaced thanks to the life jacket. Now I thank mom for this. I coughed a bit because it prevented me from swallowing water. I looked around to find mom, Mike, and Anne. They started to come out, coughing too.
"Mom!" I searched. "Anne!" I searched again but she wasn't there. "Anne!" I kept shouting.
Mike had a mom.
Suddenly something surfaced next to me.
Anne.
"Anne, are you okay?" I asked, as I approached her.
"Yes," she nodded, starting a launcher.
"Are you okay?!" the man asked again.
I looked in his direction. Everyone was focused on us, they were even crowded on the small dock that looks like mine. Kayler looked worried at me, something that might have come but I couldn't.
I ignored him.
"Yes!" mom replied. "Thank you!"
I started pushing myself to the boat. Mike got up first and helped mom up. After that he gave Anne his hand, I was still a little too much to get to it. Don't judge me, I can't swim.
"Come on, keep going," mom said.
I swam until I reached the small boat, Mike took my hand and pulled me up. Sometimes I think I weigh nothing.
"Are you okay?" mom asked.
I nodded and they sent me alongside Anne, mom sent herself alongside her and Mike too. We're all soaked.
"And the oars?" Mike asked.
I looked to my left. There were the oars, getting away from us.
"Running away from us," I pointed out.
They opened their mouths in surprise and then closed them. We crossed our arms indignantly. We're a walking disaster.
How do we look right now? I can only hear laughter from the guys. Okay, this is embarrassing.
"Don't worry!" someone shouts. "We'll rescue you now!"
We turned our heads to them. Kayler came out of a kind of garage that was partly on land and partly in the water. He came out in a boat, which does have a motor and not oars, along with another guy. In no time they were in front of us, not wanting to laugh.
"Kayler, you're our savior!" mom exclaimed, being the first to get into his boat.
He's nothing he said, smiling at him.
The other guy approached Anne.
"Hello, he had this."
She looked at me and then at him.
"H-hello," she stammered.
"I'm Apollo."
I left them talking alone because I see that there was left over; Mike had already passed too, Kayler as soon as he looked at me approached me and gave me the arm of the arm to help me.
"It wasn't necessary for you to come," I murmured, passing me also.
He raised an eyebrow.
"In these moments I would only prefer you to tell me" Thanks, Kayler, you saved us "and give me a kiss."
I smiled amused.
"You wish."
Apollo helped Anne and, when everyone could in the boat, he started. Goodbye, little boat.
Minutes later we arrived at the dock. Mom got out first, then Mike, then Apollo helped Anne and then, unfortunately, Kayler to me.
"See you, Carolina," he whispered. "Whether at night or in the morning, maybe you wake up like today."
And he began to move away. I know what he means by "Maybe you wake up like today." Memories worry me about the window.
***
After a long day Anne had to go home, it was already night and she said she didn't want to be outside at night. We don't know what can happen, I agree too.
"Goodbye, Mrs. Lane," Anne said goodbye, to get in the passenger seat.
He was driving mom's car. I started
"What a day, right?" I commented, so as not to notice my nervousness.
I had my eyes fixed on the road, but whenever I could I could look at the forest. As spooky as ever.
"You don't have to hide it," she whispered. I looked at her questioningly - I know you're afraid to come alone.
God! Am I so obvious? But why wouldn't I find myself coming to drop off Anne before it got dark?
"That's why things happen to me, because I'm stubborn.
I cleared my throat.
"The truth is... Yes," I confessed. "But don't worry, as long as I don't go into the forest, I'm fine."
I wanted to convince myself of that, but I couldn't. I felt a strange sensation in my chest, a feeling that maybe something bad could happen.
"Stop, there's my bike."
I stopped in front of Anne's bicycle. She got off quickly to put it in the back, and in no time, she was sitting next to me.
"That was quick."
"Better safe than sorry."
Half an hour later, we were arriving at the town, the lights, the people. Here I feel safe. I stopped at a two-story house and said goodbye to Anne; we would see each other tomorrow at school. Now it was up to me to be strong. I ventured back onto that lonely road, towards the forest. We drove for many minutes; I played music to avoid that silence... So silent. We were almost at the turnoff for Kayler's house and then mine.
You could say I was going as fast as this could go. Almost there, just a little more and... Boom! I heard an explosion from the front. I stopped immediately and turned off the music. My breathing was heavy. I looked around; there was only forest. The moon was shining. I opened my door and stepped out slowly to see what was wrong with my mom's junk.
That sounded ugly.
Ah, a tire exploded. Damn it! Why do these things only happen to me?
"Ugh! What did I do to deserve this?" I complained.
It was more than obvious; I had to walk.
The longer I wait, the later it gets. Come on, Caro, almost there. If I run, I'll get there sooner. So I did, I ran. But then a howl made me stop dead in my tracks, paralyzed.
Shit.
