Chapter 124 124: Who Were To Me
He followed Cam like a spy, his feet landing noiselessly on the floor.
They were currently in Echelon, the place THC reserved for top players.
He lived there, too, and if Baby did, too... then things were about to get really complicated for him.
The elevator slid open, and Saint watched, as Cam pressed for the fiftieth floor.
"Damn it," he muttered, gritting his teeth.
If Baby resided in a condo on the 50th floor, then running into him from the 49th floor was inevitable.
He was impatient, something was eating at him from the inside out.
He needed to see Baby.
However, appearing all of a sudden would look bad, especially after how he left things between them.
Right?
Who was he kidding, of course!
He paced the lobby, thinking of how he was going to speak to Baby.
Suddenly, the elevator pinged again and out walked Baby, Cam beside him.
He quickly hid beside a wall, watching Baby like some freak.
"You have no idea, Cam. I swear, I almost sent money to that dude, turns out he was only impersonating Oliver," Baby snorted.
"Come on, Baby. You know Oliver would never ask you to send him some urgent funds... the guy's stinking with money... just like the rest of us," Cam said with pride.
Baby chuckled as they approached the exit, "Yeah... I know that. It was just a moment of misjudgment." he said, drawing his blue hoodie over his head.
Saint watched them go, unable to move for a few seconds.
"Oliver?" he murmured, his hands clenching beside him.
So Baby kept contact with Oliver and not him?
It sounded like they've gotten real close in the past year.
He sighed.
Baby was a beauty to behold in the past. But, now, he was devastatingly irresistible.
It wasn't his place to admire what he'd let go, but he couldn't help himself.
Seeing that Baby didn't act harsh toward him, he took that as a sign of maturity. Maybe they can become best buddies, there's nothing wrong in being friends with an ex, right?
He moved, intending to trail Baby and Cam, but he paused.
He looked down at his still sweaty attire and shook his head.
If he was aiming at a reunion with Baby, he needed to look neat.
No, he wasn't trying to impress or win him back. He was just trying to look...
Forget what he was trying to look like. He was speaking to Baby and that was final.
After a few minutes, Saint was standing in front of the Echelon, dressed in a black expensive shirt and trousers.
Luckily, Cage had posted a picture, tagging Baby in a nearby restaurant.
His location was locked in.
He put his shades on and headed toward his car.
Fifteen minutes drive, that's all it took for Saint to park in front of the fancy restaurant.
Stepping out of his car, he slid a hand in his pocket and walked inside the building.
Immediately, he saw Cage speaking to a staff and strode over to him.
"Yo, Kross, where's your darling darling?" Cage asked, smirking.
Saint smiled, "Resting her pretty self, Cage. Are you here alone?" he questioned, his eyes slowly scanning around the room.
Everyone he looked at brought disappointment to his soul.
They were not Baby.
"Nah, here with some other guys. Oh, and I ran into that Danvers guy..." Cage paused, watching Saint carefully.
"What? Where is he... I mean, they?" Saint asked.
"You know, I heard all about your partnership with Danvers at Westbridge. Hope come you two aren't that close as I heard?" he cocked a brow, waiting.
Saint almost groaned in frustration.
He wasn't in the mood for this.
"We were teammates. After qualifying for THC, he chose to join the team in London and I chose to stay home. Make sense?" he explained like he knew the whole story.
He couldn't possibly go, 'Oh, yeah, I dated him and dumped him on the championship day, and now he hates me and wants nothing to do with me.'
That would warrant another lengthy question from Cage which he wasn't interested in explaining.
"Ahhh, I see," Cage murmured.
"Alright. With me or you wanna catch up with your ex captain?" Cage asked, taking a bill from the staff.
Saint cleared his throat. Cage was right... "ex."
"I'll definitely catch up with you guys later. Where is he?" he asked as calmly as he could, hiding his impatience.
"Vip. Take your left," Cage directed, "I'm at the top," he said, patting Saint's shoulder, and then left.
"Vip," Saint murmured as he weaved past neatly arranged tables.
He turned a corner and paused.
Right in front of him stood the VIP door.
Baby was right there, having his peaceful meal.
Should he wait?
Maybe Baby might lose appetite if he sees him.
Suddenly, the door slowly started to open and Saint was stuck.
He didn't know what to do.
There was no time to hide or act composed.
If that was Baby behind that door, then Baby was about to meet a mortified man.
Cam walked out of the door and paused.
The moment his eyes fell on Saint, his eyes darkened with rage.
"I knew you couldn't stay away. Spying at the Echelon lobby wasn't enough for you?" Cam asked, his jaw working tightly.
Saint inhaled deeply, swallowing hard as he tried to find his voice.
Words weren't needed to see how deep Cam hated him.
This was what he expected from Baby.
Hate.
Anger.
Revenge.
Not whatever that was.
"Please, Cameron... I need to speak to Baby," Saint spoke quietly, his eyes pleading.
Cam cracked his neck, "Yeah? Speak to my fist!" He launched his fist on Saint's face without warning.
Saint was knocked down in an instant.
"Bastard, get up!" Cam roared and gripped Saint's collar, punching him again, and again, and again.
Saint let him.
He deserved it.
If Baby felt anything toward him, then maybe Cam was his nemesis.
"Stop! Stop immediately!" A female staff came and tried to pull Cam off Saint but failed.
"Stop! Help! Security!" she screamed.
The VIP door burst open and Baby burst out, his eyes widening as he took in the scene.
Moving fast, he grabbed Cam's waist and pulled him away from the bleeding man beneath him.
"Cam, what the hell? This is a public space, why are you hitting him?" he asked, tightening his arms around Cam.
Cam was glaring, glaring at Saint on the floor.
"Here he is, he was beating this man up," the female staff returned with two security men.
"No," Saint coughed, standing from the floor, wiping the blood that was trickling from his lips to his chin.
"I'm fine, sirs. Thank you, really," Saint said, nodding at them.
The security men stared at Cam for a while before they nodded at Saint and left.
"I'll kill you –"
"Cam, enough!" Baby roared, pinning Cam against the wall.
"Stop, what's gotten into you?" Baby questioned, frowning.
"Baby," Saint called behind him, blinking to clear his vision.
"You're really asking to die," Cam muttered.
"Stay," Baby said slowly, pointing at Cam's face before releasing him.
Slowly, he turned to face Saint, furrowing his brows as he took in the bloodied face of the man in front of him.
"Look, I apologise for my friend. I think he had too much to eat and needed exercising... truly, we are sorry." Baby apologised, offering Saint a bandana from his pocket.
Saint shook his head as he took the bandana from Baby, holding it in his hands.
He wasn't about to spill it with his blood.
"He's right, Baby. I deserve it–"
"And more, bastard," Cam cut him off.
Saint nodded, "And more..." he locked his eyes with Baby, expecting something, anything.
Again, he was met with nothing.
His heart twisted fast in his chest, hurting more than the pain on his face.
"I'm sorry, Baby. I know I don't have the right to speak to you, or even show my face in front of you, but I just want you to know that I've lived with the guilt all year. I tried reaching out to you but all I got was radio silence and it left me devastated. I made my choice, I know, but I was hoping we could stay friends–"
Cam's snorting cut in, pausing Saint for a while.
Saint took a deep breath and continued, "I was hoping we could stay friends, Baby. I can't stay without having you as part of my life... please..." he murmured.
Baby scrunched up his face in confusion, staring at Saint's serious face for a while before he slowly turned to look at Cam.
"What is he talking about?" he asked, perplexed.
Cam shrugged, "Ask him."
Baby faced Saint again, "Um... what are you talking about?"
Saint froze, his whole body going numb when he looked into Baby's eyes and saw no lies in them.
It can't be... no, it can't fucking be.
"You... don't remember me?" Saint's voice was filled with dread, his pulse racing from fear.
Baby scratched the back of his head and sighed, "Look, man, I'm not supposed to say this, but I have no other choice. I've encountered a lot of similar cases over the year and I truly apologize if I hurt you by not following what you were saying back there..." He glanced at Cam, unsure if he should speak or not.
Cam nodded at him, supporting him emotionally.
"A year ago, I was told I had this life-threatening car accident. Luckily, it only took my memories and not my life. So, seems like you're someone I should know. Who were you to me?" Baby asked calmly, smiling encouragingly to Saint.
Saint's world shut down.
Not slowly.
His world slammed against his face like a speeding train, knocking the breath out of him.
He could take a beating.
He could bear the curses... even welcome the hate and insults.
But Baby forgetting him?
That was a death sentence.l
