Chapter 93 Aunt-In-Law

Chapter 93 Aunt-In-Law
  Kian
The plan wasn’t to return to Dallas sooner. It was to restrategize—figure out exactly where I’d been going wrong, why every plan to win my ex-wife back had failed. Change my approach and make her see me in a different light.
Plans of winning Verena back were supposed to be my ultimate focus not until I had received bad news from Jaden.
Zita had forged my house documents, put my house for sale online, and was already close to sealing the deal. She’d sold four out of my cars and right now, I was teetering on the edge of losing my sanity.
Because of her, I was forced to return to Dallas, meeting with my legal team, filing reports against her, and trying to have her apprehended in London.
The actual audacity. She trapped me with that lie of a pregnancy and still had the nerve to pull this stunt on me. I was damn sure that if she had never been pregnant, Verena would have returned to me easily.
I managed to recover one car. The rest? No progress made.
I groaned from the pain splitting through my skull. “Mum, can I get painkillers—” I shouted, fixing my eyes back to my phone’s screen.
Jaden hasn’t responded to any of my texts. I had told him not to text back if he didn’t have positive news for me—like the house listing had been frozen.
  “Coming,” Mum shouted in response.
Zita returned none of my calls. I swear, if that bitch were in sight, I would have strangled her to death already.
Mum hurried towards me, holding a glass cup of water and a strip of painkillers in the other. “Does your head still hurt,” Her face scrunched with worry.
I was tempted to say—if it didn’t hurt, I wouldn’t have requested painkillers.
But, I decided not to take out my frustration on her as I took the water from her while she pressed the pills to my palm. “Yes,”
“Sure, you don’t want to go to the hospital. I will drive you there,”
I poured the pills into my mouth, swallowed dry, and gulped down. “No, I just need my house listing to be frozen. I’m fine…”
Her chest heaved, anger contorting her features. “That wretched girl, I still can’t believe she will do this to us..” She turned her head to me, placing a hand on my shoulder. “If she felt one bit of shame or was even remorseful, she would have lain low. I can’t even imagine how devastated you must have been when you saw the news—that she wasn’t pregnant,”
  Devastated?
  Me?
  I was elated.
So glad and relieved that I dropped to my knees and cried tears of joy.
“Or did you know she wasn’t pregnant before? Was that the reason you didn't come to the cathedral?,”
Despite the pain actively splitting through my skull, I forced out a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “I only followed my intuition,”
  Intuition my foot.
When I heard Verena moan over the phone, with the haunting sound of skin slapping in the background, something inside of me snapped—and I knew I couldn’t let her go. That was when I swore ‘damn you’ to Zita, the non-existent twins, my parents, and the CEO position my dad used as a threat to keep me in check.
My phone chimed with a message, snapping me back to reality.
  Jaden.
My heart almost leaped into my throat as I snagged my phone off the table and read his text. Four simple words and relief crashed over me. “The listing has been frozen,”
My eyes closed briefly as I glanced at my mum with a smile. “The company stopped the listing. She can’t sell the house anymore,”
Mum placed a hand on her chest, her shoulders sagging out of relief. “Thank God. This is why you should keep your documents locked away just like your father,”
  “Learnt my lesson,”
“Good. Don’t worry, the next person I’m about to set you up with wouldn’t act this way,”
  My smile fell.
  “What did you just say?”
She reached for her phone and scrolled through it. “Her name is Eugene. She is the daughter of New York’s Mayor. Runs one of the top technical firms in the…”
The anger that festered in the low of my stomach suddenly coursed through me and before I knew it, I snapped. “Mum!”
“What? I am only trying to help you move on,”
I ripped my hand through my hair frustratedly, almost pulling it from my scalp. “Can you please just stop setting me up with people. You are the reason this whole thing with Zita happened and now, you are pushing someone else on me?”
She scoffed. “Are you accusing me?”
“Yes. Both you and Dad are the reason I ended up this way. If you’d never brought Zita into the picture, Verena and I would still be married,”
She rolled her eyes. “You wanted Zita too—”
I cut in. “Not for marriage…you know what, just stop and leave me alone. I’m not a kid anymore and I will be with whoever I like. And that person is Verena,”
Mum stared at me incredulously. “Why are you still so hung up on your ex-wife. She is in a relationship with your uncle for crying out loud,”
“Not for long. Now that Zita and I aren’t together anymore, she will come back,
She stared at me, lost for words before she shook her head. “You’re delusional,”
I nodded. “I know. To get something, you have to believe in it—even to the point of delusion,”
Mum slapped her palm over her forehead. “Sometimes, I just don’t know what to do with you. You will only get a reality check when you watch her walk down the aisle to your uncle,”
A cloud of dread suddenly hung above me. Trying to picture Verena in a wedding dress, walking down the aisle to someone that wasn’t me made me sick to my stomach.
Marriage? Would they actually take things that far?
But, she wasn't in love with him and they were only fucking, right?
“Marriage?” the word looped endlessly in my head.
No. I wouldn’t let that happen. I would rather die than watch my ex-wife become my aunt-in-law.
