Chapter 62 Work together

Chapter 62 Work together
      Daxton
Verena wore a numb expression, tying her hair into a ponytail before she swallowed the pills begrudgingly and took a long sip of water.
Her face scrunched in disgust for a second. Verena could be dramatic sometimes and the fascinating part, I loved it about her.
Her eyes held mine as she waved her hand frantically, like she had been to hell and back. “No more of this again, please”
I stared at her like she was fire—one I wanted to get burned in—lips curling in amusement. “You started the prescription darling, you would have to finish it. That is how it works,”
Her nose crinkled a bit and then she opened her mouth to speak but closed it. “I think I will make another sandwich. I need to refresh my taste buds and cleanse my mouth of that bitter taste,”
“Make some for me?” I shot her a wink.
      “Is that a command?”
      “I am pleading,”
The corner of her mouth twitched up in a smile, at the same time a knock sounded on the door and it creaked open a bit as Josh peered through it. “Can I come in?”
“Good morning, Josh Beaufort,”  Verena walked past him and the moment she was out of the door, I finally released a breathy relief. How I’d managed to restrain myself from shoving her up the wall especially in those short pants that showed half her ass was still a mystery to me.
If it weren't for the massive marks on her face that reminded me of the fact that someone dared hit her, she would probably be choking on my dick right now.
Thinking about the horrid state that I met her in two days made fresh anger flow through me again.
      “Sir?”
I jerked forward, whipping my gaze to him. “About Cassandra?” I said impatiently.
Josh straightened. “We planted the stuff in her house as you instructed. The police acted on the tip-off I gave to them and they raided her house in Beverly- Hills. They retrieved a huge amount of cocaine and a giant bag of Methamphetamine,”
“The board of directors has already called for a meeting, and she is on the verge of being removed as the CEO. Given the severity of the drugs found in her possession, she should face up to three years in prison,”
Satisfaction rumbled in my throat as I leaned back in the chair. “You did well. You deserve a bonus,”
      Josh smiled. “Thank you,”
Messing with Verena meant messing with me and Cassandra would regret ever crossing paths with me.
“I will take my leave now…” He said, starting to turn until his gaze snapped back on mine.
      “Sir,” He muttered.
      “What?”
“I did my investigation concerning what happened at the hotel and I discovered certain discrepancies in Miss Verena’s words.”
      “Go on,”
He nodded. “She claimed that Mandy hit her on the face a total of seven times but from what I gathered from the eyewitnesses, it was only once. I think that she is manipulating you and that isn't a good sign,”
I gave him a blank stare. “So?”
Josh’s mouth parted slowly. “You don't see an issue in that she is using you?”
Before I arrived at the police station, Gavin had given me a detailed report of what had happened. How Mandy had slapped her once. So when Verena exaggerated the whole thing, I had only played along.
I was more focused on the fact that Cassandra framed her and more annoyed that Mandy hit her.
“What’s wrong with that? I actually find it cute that she went this far just to get me to do something for her. Verena never asks me for anything and the one time she does, you expect me to let her down?”
“And don't you dare mention that you know the truth to her,”
Josh stared at me like he was at a loss for words. “Alright sir,” He breathed.
“Also, Mandy has been showing up at the hotel premises—restrained by the guards of course. She wouldn't stop coming until she meets and explains the whole situation to you,”
A growl rumbled from my throat, a fresh wave of anger coursing through me because I really had a soft spot for her, respected her, and she paid me back by hitting my woman.
“If she keeps showing up, have the police file a restraining order on her. Verena and I will resume work next week.”

      Zita’s P.O.V
I have been having nightmares that started after Verena ambushed Kian and kissed him. Ambushed was a strong word here but that was really what it was. Nightmares that wouldn't end until I confronted Verena, talked it out with her, and pleaded with her to leave my man alone.
Kian had gotten worse since that night. He now took secret calls at midnight, muttered Verena’s name in his sleep—it took a whole lot of restraint not to hit him on the face or press the pillow to his face as long as it stopped him from mentioning her name. And one time I caught him going through his and Verena’s wedding pictures.
She had taken over his brain like a parasite.
We were getting married soon, yet he had never lifted a finger to help with the preparations. I was the one doing it all—choosing his clothes, sending out invites, and managing everything on my own.
Kian hadn't once asked about the pregnancy or the baby. Sometimes, I wondered if my pregnancy was real, was this still how he would treat me?
Quinn believed that I was a lost cause and I was done with being insufferable and pathetic because of that wench, Verena.
I pulled up at Uncle Daxton’s hotel. I heard that was where she worked as his assistant.  I had walked into the lobby, asking to see Verena but the receptionists there had mentioned that the boss’s assistant wasn't available.
And as I turned my back to them, I heard them mention something about an issue that happened on the 11th floor. Something that resulted in her being assaulted and detained.
I came out of the hotel, running a hand through my hair as frustration clawed up my throat. “Now, how do I reach this bitch? Why did I even delete her number,” A groan tore from my throat.
For a second, I deliberated calling Kian but that had to be the worst idea that had ever crossed my mind. He wouldn’t even answer the call so what was the point?
I yanked off my sunglasses, shoving them inside my purse and as I walked towards where my car was parked, the name that rang through the air made me halt in my step.
Did I just hear the name, Verena?
“I am going through all this mess because of that slut. From the moment she walked in as his assistant, I knew she was going to be a problem,” She ranted to someone on the phone, her eyes watering with tears.
“I told you, she seduced him and has managed to have him wrapped around her fingers. That is the reason he fired me. That pathological liar! I hate her so much”
Something dark coiled in my chest as I tilted my head to the side, studying this woman who had managed to pique my interest with a slow, unblinking stare.
My mouth tilted into a grin. She would be useful for me. I could feel it deep in my soul. I strided to her. “Hi?”
She turned to look at me, staring at me with confusion before a hint of recognition flashed through her eyes as she removed the phone from her ear. “I think I know you,”
I folded my arms over my chest. “Of course, you do,”
I mean, who didn't know me? I had never walked down the street without someone asking for a selfie.
      Her brows knitted. “Who are—”
I cut in. “I heard you mention Verena, ma’am, and from the way you spoke about her, I think she did something bad to you,”
“Yes, she made me lose my job because of her lies!”
I sucked in a sharp gasp—acting like I cared. “Really?”
      “Yes,”
I slowly let out an exhale. “I also have something against that woman. She is on the verge of ruining my relationship—” Her eyes slowly widened in shock and I smirked when she wasn't looking.
“It feels good finding someone who feels just the same way I feel about Verena,”
Before, the plan was to cause a scene, paint her as the home-wrecker that she was so that she would leave Kian alone.  But now that I saw someone who looked desperate enough to want to get back at Verena, my plan had changed.
      “Who are you?”
“Me?” My lips curled in a smile and I took a step forward until we were just inches apart. “I am Zita, Kian Cooper’s fianceè and the mother of his unborn child,” A sense of pride flooded through my chest.
“Let’s talk over coffee and I will tell you what she did to me and how we can work together.”
