Chapter 37 Nightmares
Daxton
Mikaelson’s message. “Kian agreed to settle evenly with Verena. However, he keeps coming up with excuses to not sign the papers. He is intentionally stalling the whole process and I wouldn’t be going easy on him anymore.”
A low deep laugh left my mouth, adding little or no humor to the chaos building in the conference room. “We should meet for dinner soon, Mikael.”
Kian. Kian. Kian. My sweet little nephew—
I turned off my phone, shooting death stares at the IT staff who struggled to connect my laptop to the projector. I could see the panic, the stillness that followed when our eyes met.
How did I end up with incompetent people?
Sweat dripped to his lashes as he struggled to tear his gaze away from me. “S-Sir…” He stuttered.
“The laptop seems to be malfunctioning”
I half-sighed, darting my eyes to Verena who sat on the chair against the wall. She only read my eyes and understood what I meant. Verena crossed over to Sam with her laptop bag.
She removed it. “Use mine instead,” She smiled warmly at him.
My eyes narrowed on her, then to Sam who was completely awe-struck. Relief gleamed in his eyes because of her smile.
And to make matters worse, what was that strange light in his eyes?
The familiar ache that started whenever I saw Verena with other men bloomed in my chest again—jealousy.
My jaw clenched hard—so hard—that a muscle ticked. “Get started!” A growl rumbled from my chest and that was enough to wipe off the smile from Sam’s face and send that fear back into his eyes.
Within seconds, the projector came alive but—
Gasps echoed through the room, murmurs rising. I’d expected to see the slides I’d carefully compiled—proper investigative reports pointing to the fact that someone here was leaking marketing strategies, potential clients, and investors to rival hotels.
But what was on the screen was mind-blowing.
A picture of me in high school skating on the rink while flaunting my gold medal and worse—my abs. I loved flashing my abs then but now I couldn’t help but find it embarrassing.
I nodded, averting my gaze to Verena whose eyes widened, hand slammed over her mouth.
“Who is that?”
“That picture looks old”
“Doesn’t that look like Mr Daxton?”
She rushed to her feet, blinking continuously— not without shooting a glare at Sam as he moved to the side. “I am really sorry” Her lips wobbled and I could make out the way her heart was already thumping in her chest.
Soon, the correct presentation appeared on the projector while she scurried back to her seat and ducked her head.
At first, the plan for the conference meeting was simple—wreak havoc, instill fear into their minds, watch them tremble while reminding them about who they worked for.
But Verena—
I made one of the hotel managers carry on while I stared at her, amused—completely amused. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment as she tried not to make eye contact with me.
The way she pushed her lips forward…
Damn! It reminded me of how she wrapped her lips around my dick when she joined me in the shower this morning. Blood rushed straight into my groin as I reached for my phone and texted her.
“Little Miss is a stalker”
She glanced at her phone and shook her head and ignored me.
Then I sent her a dirty text that made her freeze—still not looking at me. My dick strained harder against my pants with every text that I sent her—each getting worse than before.
Her mouth dropped as her eyes breezed through the phone and finally, I got her attention. She turned to me, cheeks burning. “What!” She mouthed and blinked rapidly until she averted her gaze.
I was about to send another flirty text when Mandy’s words caught my attention. “We have worked with Mr. Daxton for years and have never experienced such problems. So, we can’t possibly leak such personal information—” her tone was off, coated with venom.
“—but someone who just joined us could be the one behind this” She eyed Verena.
“What are you trying to insinuate?” My voice bounced off the walls.
Mandy turned to look at me. “Sir?” She said, masking off the shock on her face with a smile.
“Are you trying to imply that Verena is the one?” Anger slowly surged within me.
Mandy forced out a smile that didn't reach her eyes. “Certainly not! I was only trying to vouch for the colleagues that I have known for a while. It is just right that I do that,”
“Thank you for doing the bare minimum, Mandy” I fixed her with a stern gaze and the smile on her face dropped.
I stared ahead, a frown twisting my features. “I didn't call for this meeting to point fingers at anyone. This meeting is a silent warning to whoever the culprit might be. I would find and ruin you.”
Verena’s P.O.V
Oh! The heat—it wouldn't stop burning my cheeks anytime I remembered the texts that he had sent to me.
He had filled my thoughts, and as soon as the meeting was over, I was out of the conference room.
That place was hot!
“Imagine how it would feel to eat you out on the conference table with your legs parted wide for me” I closed my eyes and it was hard not to let my imagination run wild.
And fuck! Now Daxton knew that I had gone through his high school’s website just to search for pictures of him.
I shook my head, splashing more water on my face and–
The door to the restroom opened and Mandy came in, eyes locking with mine and I did this inward eye-roll. What the heck did she try to pull back there?
I thought she had changed? It turned out that she was just waiting for the perfect opportunity to come after me.
She sauntered to me, packing her hair into a bun. “Nice shirt,”
Daxton’s shirt! I knew she was onto something. Could it be that she found out that I was—
She smirked. “Buying the same shirt as Mr Daxton just for him to notice you won't work, Verena”
A wave of relief crashed in me and at the same time ‘what!’. “What are you talking about, and most importantly, what were you trying to do at the meeting?”
“Utter my opinion,”
I tsked. I would ignore her and—
Her eyes locked with mine through the mirror and they burned with something intense—completely new and dangerous. “Stop trying too hard. The other assistants have tried over the years and they ended up getting fired,”
“You are not his type. He would never notice you”
I wanted to laugh, wanted to show her the hickeys that he had left on my neck but this woman wasn't worth it.
“I am not the one to put people down—” I took a step forward, almost closing the space between us.
“—but you need to act your age. This mean girl character doesn't suit you. You will only make people either dislike or completely hate you”
“Have you seen the way Mr Daxton looks at you, with nothing but pure dislike in his eyes!” Her eyes softened and fear slowly slithered through them.
I smiled victoriously, satisfied with knowing that the thoughts of Daxton disliking her would probably ruin her sleep.
And, I hoped it would give her soul-jerking nightmares!
