Chapter 35 The Cops
Zita
I arrived at Kian’s office, heart beating mildly in my chest—even though it could turn sporadic any moment from now. I had to calm down. But, how was I supposed to calm down when Kian had canceled all of my calls?
While I drove to his office. I had called him a total of sixty-nine times, and was even pulled up by the cops for overspeeding. He had given me a ticket before letting me off.
I had to calm down. I couldn't have Kian thinking that I was a lunatic since he had already complained about me being suffocating.
“Keep it in, Zita” I inhaled deeply, flashing smiles at those who walked past me before pulling up before the receptionist, smoothing my hair.
She lifted her gaze, ready to flash that fake ‘ass’ smile that almost all receptionists threw around but the moment her eyes met mine, the smile on her face slowly faded. “Good evening, I am here to meet my fiancè. Kian Cooper. You should know me right?”
I could see the awkwardness in her eyes, as she reached for a pen. “I do but do you have an appointment with him?”
Confusion morphed my features. I needed an appointment to see my fiancé. Weird. “I don't think that I need an appointment to see him. Just tell him that I am here”
She simply nodded, reached for the desk phone, and dropped it almost immediately. “I am sorry but I have to check the list?”
My patience was starting to wear thin. If it weren't for the fact that I was trying to keep it cool, I would have barged into his office. But, I wouldn't want to risk doing that. What if he were in an important meeting with investors and I ruined his chances?
Moreover, he had told me not to call him for the number of days he would spend working in the office. God! He must have freaked out from the number of times that I had called him.
“The list of what?”
“One minute please—” She held a finger up.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for a second before it was followed by this drumming and—
Her eyes were back on me. “Mr Kian had given me a list of people that shouldn't be allowed into his office”
Okay but what has that got to do with me?
“Mikaelson Williams”
Fair. Since they had bad blood between them, it was just sensible that he wouldn't want Mikaelson encroaching on his personal space and destabilizing him for the rest of the day.
“Daxton Cooper”
His uncle? I mean that was fair but—
Could that mean that Verena was next on the list? But wait, this was so unprofessional, why did she feel the need to read this list to me?
“Number three on the list is—” She bit on her lip, casting a glance at me. “Zita”
My heart stopped.
“And Zita and Zita. Your name is on the rest of the list, miss. I’m afraid that you can't see him”
For a second all I did was just stare at her before bursting into a peal of hysterical laughter. This had to be a joke. The cruelest joke that I’ve heard.
I let out a very loud hiss. “You have to be out of your mind! I know my fiancè and he would never compile such a list. I am sure that you wrote it just because you are jealous of what we have together” I spurted even though every part of me trembled from knowing it was what Kian was capable of doing.
The receptionist blinked in disbelief. “Excuse me!”
“I will make sure that he gets you fired!” I stared daggers at her before grabbing my bag, trying to find my way into the office and that was when she blocked my path.
I exploded, grabbed her by the hair, and shoved her to the ground and that act of violence resulted in me being thrown out of the company.
As I paced outside the parking lot, I just couldn't shake off that nasty feeling that something was wrong. Something bad had happened to Kian and I could feel it deep in my bones.
From the suspicious pictures he always sent whenever he cleared his food, to him canceling my calls—it made no sense.
I was sure that his workers had done something bad to him. What if they already killed him—
No.
I shook my head, quashing those horrific thoughts immediately but I couldn't rule that out. Maybe I should call his parents. No, I would call the cops first.
Fear clawed at my throat and tears almost dropped from my eyes as I dialed his number again. I didn't know what I was going to do if my fear came to pass.
I needed him to be fine for me.
With trembling fingers, I pressed the phone to my ears and that was the moment his secretary approached me, towering over me. “Where did you hide Kian?” I glared.
“Miss Zita, you need to leave” His voice was low and smooth as he stared at me with a face devoid of emotion.
Actually, his face had always been like that. His black eyes were cold and he hardly smiled.
“I would only leave when you provide Kian” I snapped.
Then I froze when Kian’s familiar ringtone filled my ears and it came from the secretary’s pocket.
At first, I didn't want to think much of it because it wasn’t a unique ringtone until I placed another call through him and it came ringing from—
Jaden!
I dropped the phone from my ears, eyes fixed on his pocket before our eyes met. Blood rushed into my ears and I hated that my fears were coming to pass. “Why do you have Kian’s phone?” My lips wobbled.
Jaden sighed. “I promise you that he is fine—”
I cut in sharply, almost shouting. “If he is fine, why are you not letting me see him?”
Jaden heaved another sigh and I was having none of his bullshit. If Kian’s phone was with him, could his body be in his car’s trunk?
I gasped, yelled at him to open his car’s trunk but the sight that I saw next not only devastated me but it also froze me completely. All the food boxes that I had sent over the days were sitting in the trunk of his car.
So Kian wasn't the one who sent those pictures that made me feel over the moon. IT WAS HIS SECRETARY!
I swallowed, tears burning the back of my eyes. “You have been the one sending those pictures to me” I stuttered.
He exhaled sharply. “Mmm”
My whole world stopped.
Standing on wobbling legs, I almost lost balance but he was quick to catch me.
I pushed him away. “Where is Kian?”
“I can't tell you where he is but he is fine”
Was he serious? “I will only believe that he is fine when I get to hear his voice”
Jaden stared at me for a second with eyes that silently asked ‘You’re sure you want to do this’ before he yanked the phone out of his pocket. Kian’s phone.
He dialed a number, put it on a loudspeaker and the voice that followed made my heart freeze. Kian.
“Hey Jaden, I heard what happened at the office. I am sorry for what you all had to experience because of that crazy woman”
He called me crazy? Kian called me crazy.
Jaden studied my face before he responded. “I have everything under control, sir”
“If Zita causes another scene or shows up at the office, please don't hesitate to call the cops on her.”
