Chapter 13 Little mouse
Daxton
All my life, my business has been the number one priority in my life. It had always been about making money to me so love and sex came last. If I wasn't working, I was mapping out strategies. It was always about building a massive empire for myself—that was the goal until she came into my life.
Sex had always been about my own pleasure but exploring her body with my tongue last night until she came several times fulfilled me in indescribable ways.
I loved seeing her happy.
I wanted her to be happy.
And that is the reason the same me who had never been late to work or even skipped a day, derived pleasure in watching her sleep instead. I’d even lost track of what the time was—
Verena slept on her side, her hands tucked under her head as I slowly wiped the drool from the corner of her mouth with my thumb. The feeling of having something new to obsess over was fascinating and I couldn't wait to explore every bit of it.
Suddenly the excitement inside of me slowly dissipated when a knock sounded on the door—geez, that would wake her up this way— before it creaked open and the housekeeper poked her head inside.
“Mr Daxton—” The words died in her throat when she met my stern gaze.
“What are you doing here?” My voice was low but loud enough for her to hear.
She fiddled with her fingers, her eyes traveling to Verena and I could have sworn they widened in shock. “I felt like it was odd that you were still in by this time. You didn't even have breakfast and it is almost time for lunch—”
Before I could respond, Verena stirred, snuggling up to me while muttering incoherent words that sent a small smile slipping through my face.
“And, your secretary is here—” She kept her voice as low as possible.
I nodded. “Alright, I will join him soon”
She closed the door gently and the moment she left, I pressed a kiss to Verena’s forehead before strolling down the stairs with my hands in my pockets. Josh who had been going through a file, rose to his feet, rushing to meet me.
“I was worried since you weren't in the office…”
“I am taking a day off,” I walked past him.
“But you have never taken a day off and hardly go on vacations and—” Before he could finish, I turned to him, raising a brow. “Are you here to question my decision?”
He shook his head. “No…”
“Then you should have a better reason for being here”
He nodded. “Yes, Mr Neil has been trying to reach you, calling the hotel’s phone numbers and—”
I waved my hands dismissively at him, bored with all the talk about my brother. The last time we met, he had expressed his disappointment in me for chasing after his son’s wife, looking at me in disbelief as he tried to understand what exactly I saw in Verena.
My brother even went as far as luring me to a hotel room on the guise of a business meeting only to meet two naked women on the bed. He had arranged the whole thing, claiming that sex with them would make me forget about Verena.
But how could I forget about the woman who was already injected into my veins? That woman was a drug that I wouldn't stop overdosing on.
So, when he got too persistent—almost to the point of becoming annoying with stupid talks on how I was my nephew’s role model and yada yada…I blocked him.
How was Kian picking me as a role model supposed to affect me?
I was a flawed man and anyone who saw me as a role model for morality was in for the biggest disappointment of their lives.
“Tell me about Kian instead? What has he been up to? The last I checked, he threatened to sue me,”
Josh responded. “I think those are mere threats as I believe that he has moved on from her. He came out of the house recently and went on a run with Zita—these are the things that he didn't do in the last two weeks. He even took her shopping and they went on an expensive date”
My face crinkled in confusion because something was weird. Very weird. Before he came to my office, Kian hadn't left his home for two weeks and Verena’s car which Zita drove was the only thing that came out of the house.
But, after the scene he caused at my office, he was now being active outside?
No.
Something was definitely wrong.
“Keep your eyes on him and report every weird movement back to me!”
Verena
I couldn't believe that Daxton didn't wake me up. I knew that I was weak from the experience of multiple orgasms in a night just from foreplay, but he could have woken me up.
According to what I’d heard, he was a workaholic and the last thing I wanted was for him to change things because of me—
Despite his protest and his consistent reiteration of the fact that he was the boss of the hotel, I’d dragged him to work.
And now, I was being lashed out at by tornado Mandy.
“You are resuming work by 2:30pm? Even if Mr. Daxton is late, you shouldn't be!”
For a second, confusion swirled in my mind. I was his assistant and should be by his side at all times so what was this whole fuss about?
I sucked in a deep breath. “But—”
Mandy slammed the print button, cutting me off. “There is—no but— as the report had it that he was home, which is very weird but he is the boss and I know for a fact that you weren't with him. Even, though I am the closest to him, I have never been in his house”
Those bits of laughter that always ended up putting me in trouble threatened to rip out of my mouth but I really controlled it this time. I pursed my mouth to stop the demonic laughter while feigning an apologetic expression.
“I am sorry, it will never happen again”
Mandy clicked her tongue in her mouth and that was when I noticed her clothes. She was wearing the same flare pants on me that she complained about yesterday and she’d let her hair down.
“This is your second day at work yet you keep on making mistakes. Aside from that, why are you wearing something worse than yesterday? The cropped blazer is too short, the gown is too fitting— what exactly is your goal here?”
Okay!
This woman was starting to grate on my nerves. She literally took inspiration from my clothes yesterday and dared to spew trash about the way I was currently dressed.
My throat ached with hurtful words but, I couldn't do that. Maybe she was having a bad time—
I heaved an exasperated sigh, staring into her eyes with a bright smile on my face. “You only gave advice, I never said I was going to follow it. For a heads up, I would keep dressing this way”
She tilted her head to the side, staring at me in shock before a scoff left her mouth. “I liked you at first glance but with this insolent behavior, I don't think we would get along,”
“Anything that you decide on is fine by me,
She ran a hand through her hair frustratedly. “I won't write you off just yet, Verena. What about the apology? You know you could be queried for coming in late, right?”
Too many questions!
I wanted to answer when a deep voice behind me, took me aback. Daxton. He was dressed casually. Grey hoodie and loose black sweatpants—he looked so hot.
“What apology mail?
I turned to Daxton completely, ready to tell him what had happened at the team’s dinner when Mandy swung a hand over my shoulder. “I asked her to send an apology to my email because she was late”
That was a lie!
I stared at her in confusion while she gave me this coaxing smile.
“Hmmm, I see. But there isn't a need for an apology, I was the reason she came late to work”
Mandy’s hands left my shoulder and she gasped. “You should have told me. I feel so bad for drilling you with questions”
This woman—
She was weird.
“Anyways, miss ki…” He clamped his mouth shut as my lips parted. “Verena, join me in the office in the next thirty minutes!”
Soon, I was on my way back to Daxton’s office, waving at Emily and I was about to veer into the corner when a name from the TV caught my attention.
My heart slammed against my ribcage and I turned, eyes fixed on the screen. “Kian Cooper,” The host of my favorite show said while applause followed.
Emily almost shrieked, joining my side as confusion made a full swirl in me. What was he doing on this show because the last I checked, even though he hardly spoke a word to me in the last three years, he always had complaints to make about this show.
How he hated it. Although he had still watched it with me—in silence.
So, what the hell was he doing here? Now that I thought about it, Kian had stopped calling, no new message was added to the accumulated two thousand five hundred and twenty messages that he had sent. While I was in the car, the lawyer sent a text saying he was ready to sign the divorce papers.
And damn! I forgot to ask Daxton about his meeting with Kian.
Thankfully, Kian has realized that there is no winning me back so thank God!
Emily crooned. “That is Mr Daxton’s nephew, he looks so dreamy…”
I chuckled. “Good for him—” I was about to turn when Kian’s answer to the question the host asked him took me aback.
Host Ria asked. “Do you have a pet?”
Kian laughed. “Of course, I do”
Did he recently get one because as long as I could remember, Kian wasn't a fan of keeping animals in the house?
“What type?”
“A little mouse?”
Mouse? Was he on drugs?
The host gasped. “That is cute, how long have you kept it?”
Kian chuckled, running a hand through his hair. “I won't disclose but right now that mouse is hiding from me—”
“Ah! That must be very hurtful”
“Yes,” He crossed his legs. “However, I would find my little mouse, no matter what corners she hides in, I will bring her back to me”
My heart thudded hard in my chest, Emily’s words about Kian being so hot and how she wished she were the mouse faded in the background.
Was it just me or was the little mouse he was referring to— Me?
