Chapter 62 Chapter 62

\[PAST...CONTINUED\]

Minutes after Noémie left, he lifted his head when another knock landed on the door.

For fuck’s sake!

“Hey, cousin, are you in?” A familiar voice arrived.

And before he could work on something sarcastic to say, Hannah pushed the door open and walked inside as if she owned it. But maybe she did. After all, his father favoured her more than any of his own sons. He wasn’t sure what his fucking deal was, but he wasn’t in the right mind to go too deep into it either.

“What do you want?” he asked, exasperated, while massaging his temples.

“Wow!” she exclaimed dramatically. “Someone’s in a good mood.”

Ajax rolled his eyes.

“Don’t worry, I’m not here to stop you from…” she sussed his situation. The empty glass on the desk. An almost empty bottle of alcohol in his grasp. “…whatever that is you are doing. I just saw Uncle out. He wanted me to make you something to sober you up a little.”

“And why would he want that?” The fucker couldn’t leave him alone, could he?

“Aunt is on his way. He said that it would disappoint her to see you like this.”

She wasn’t wrong. His mom had been really patient with him for as long as he could remember. But if she saw him like this, she would be beyond upset. And to make her upset, he wouldn’t be able to stand it.

Sighing deeply in his chest, he set the bottle aside. “Fine. What do you have?”

The smile that graced Hannah’s face at that moment, Ajax thought it was really annoying.

Then again, except for a certain dark-haired woman, everyone was just as annoying to him.

Loud noises.

So much ruckus.

What the fuck was going on?

Lifting his head one more time from the desk and rubbing his eyes, Ajax ran a hand through his hair.

Only to realize he had fallen asleep in the study. How long had it been? He couldn’t tell shit.

And where the hell was Hannah? He acutely remembered her sitting across from him and talking about…well, stuff, that he couldn’t be bothered to recall.

It had something to do with the new recruits in her security agency…but he couldn’t be sure.

Anyway. Not that it was important.

Right now, all he wanted to know was what the hell this racket was about.

It sounded like someone had lost it, but Ajax was too drunk and out of his mind to place a name or a face to that voice. Especially when the door was closed, and the sound wasn’t as clear as it could have been.

He heard someone yell again. Followed by angry footsteps.

Ajax pushed himself off the chair and stumbled out of the room. Only to come face to face with his father.

“You’re still here?” Ajax couldn’t help but ask, sounding heavily surprised and fired up at the same time.

“You’re still drunk?” The man asked almost immediately, brows furrowed. “How do you feel?”

Ajax thought it had to be some fucked-up dream. Did his father really ask how he was feeling? He ignored the question and turned to face the stairs. “What’s going on downstairs?” he asked with a frown.

“Nothing for you to worry about?” His father grunted, whirling him around with a hand on his shoulder.

“Are you sure? It’s kind of my home…” Ajax drawled, his words being slurred as if he felt his tongue swell a little.

“I’m always sure of myself.” The old man grunted.

With an arm around his shoulder, his father helped him walk to his room.

The dream was getting weirder and weirder every second. Ajax couldn’t help but think.

Just then, someone’s phone rang. Michael Halest was quick to answer. “Tell me you found her!” he hissed, turning around a little as if it was a conversation he didn’t want Ajax to hear.

After ending the call with an irritated look on his face, Michael Halest continued to walk Ajax to his room.

“Your mom will be here in an hour or so. Get some rest until then.”

Leaving him at the door of his room, Michael Halest turned and strode in the opposite direction of the hallway. Ajax thought he saw Hannah at the end, but his vision had turned a tad fuzzy, so it was impossible to be positive.

Not that it mattered. Taking support from the wall to balance his unsteady footsteps, Ajax turned the knob of the door and pushed it open.
