Persephone’s POV
To be touched by an octopus and led by a sea horse. The tentacles of the octopus had those sucker like thingies underneath which had created a vacuum and were stuck to my skin. Thankfully I was being able to breathe and see well with the bubble on top of my head. So I thought that while they would take me to this place it was better to make small talk.
“I had a question, if I may ask,” I started and the sea horse stopped moving in the linear motion that it was going. And I almost crashed on it.
“Belam, this one has manners and she is asking for permission. I never have encountered one before which has not just demanded,” said Rudd and I had to smile inwardly. Grandmaman had taught me that some times manners and etiquette would go the long way in taking you to the place you wished for.
“Girlie, you may ask what you want,” said the octopus on the top of my back and I said,” I saw that the corals here are of a different colour than we find usually in the sea that I have swam in. The fishes are also of darker hue. I think that there is much more to here at play than the light not reaching this place.”
The sea horse smirked and said,” You are an intelligent one. People do come here just for the sake of treasure but they don’t even bother looking at us neither the place that they are in. You, my girl are different and for that I am glad to have made your acquaintance. You see, in this realm, there are two suns. Not one, one is the dark sun and the other is the light one. The light one has bleached all the colours and changed everything to shades of white and yellow and here the side of the dark sun we have taken control of the colours. The magic here is older, deeper and richer, in both taste and kind. And you, my girl have just come to the right place. But if I may ask, why do you want the blood pearl so bad? It is not a very common thing to search for?”
I sighed and replied,” Well my powers are just out of control. I mean, not like that out of control but like the force of my power is almost uncontrolled and I almost burnt a guy after I was angry and then one of the sirens dumped cold water on me and put out the fire.”
“You were on fire or you put someone else on fire?” asked the octopus and I sighed again. This was getting really repetitive now. The octopus named Belam continued,” No because I didn’t understand the situation so I am asking you to explain. After all we are going to be quite some time under water to find what you are looking for. And you gotta know what to do and if you have the guts to actually make the sacrifice to take the blood pearl.”
“Sacrifice? There was nothing told to me about sacrifice,” I almost shrieked but I was under water. I had to keep calm or else I will drown and no one would find me.
“Dear girl, do you really think that magic does not have it’s price? Blood pearl is something so rare that until and unless you have the sea creatures like us living underneath the rocks to guide you, no one would be able to reach it.”
And the moment he uttered those words I started seeing the bones floating and stuck waving in the water like a strange underwater graveyard and I almost yelped. Belam and Rudd both smiled and sniggered.
“You are scaring me, aren’t you?” I asked as they kept sniggering and Rudd said,” So you were on fire?”
“I was on fire. I have this strange thing where I put myself on fire and then I burn everything else around me. A self immolation kind of stuff, only that I can’t burn myself in that fire,” I replied and they both were nodding and moving and bobbing as I said,” Why do you ask?”
“Well because we are in a cold place and you have the power to put yourself on fire. The octopus who will give you the blood pearl will want something in exchange for it. So what do you offer someone who lives in cold and darkness?”
Huh! They were actually helpful.
“But that will only gain more attention to them, isn’t it? Do they not want to be ignored so that they can protect this magical doohickeys?”
“Don’t use that term before Marla, she will swallow you alive. It is something she takes great pride in. I mean, who wouldn’t?”
“Takes pride in what? Blood pearl?”
“That is just one part of a huge collection that she has. She is a collector of all rare magical things and she is proud of what she has done over the centuries. So be extremely careful while talking to her because she doesn’t take all these lightly and she will ask you of something very precious. So you think now, girlie, if you are going to be able to give that to her? You are strong. I get that from your audacity and aura but are you strong enough to make that kind of sacrifice?”
“She won’t ask me for my soul, will she for a pearl? If she is gonna do that then I am not going. I will return back to where I was. To hell with all the earthquakes and typhoons that might happen because of this,” I snapped.
“This one is really feisty,” commented Belam and I had to roll my eyes at the comment. Why did all men think of me in those terms? It was a disgusting sensation to be objectified in that way when I could kill both of them with just a thought. I would not because I am not a psychopath but still…
And finally they stopped at the mouth of another cave type thing and said,” We are here. Now you gotta jump and we will glide with you.”
“Jump? Is this not underwater?”
“Of course this is underwater but this is a trapped pocket of air and guarded and cannot be accessed until you are brought by someone like us.”
“Is this safe?” I asked as I peered and found that I was looking at a really dark tunnel.
“Girlie, nothing here in this world is safe. All you can do is make things relatively safer for you sake and so if you wish to get what you came here for then all you gotta do is jump.”
Of all the horrors that I had faced, this one was the most stomach churning one because I was still naked!!!!!
