Sapphire's pov
“Who are my real parents?” I asked. The tears in my face had dried, and my feelings were more stable now. I took in deep breaths and turned into a sitting position so I could get a proper view of my supposed father.
Jason stood on the other end, a look of regret etched all over his face. He was the least of my concerns right now; I was going to deal with him later. For now, the only thing on my mind was finding the truth about what the book had said. I had a strong instinct that I was going through with this. I was going to get to the bottom of it all today and know my fate and future.
“Pumpkin I… I don't know what you're talking about.” Dad got up and turned to the other side, trying to avoid my question. My hands became wobbly, and I lost my balance but struggled to control myself and pushed back my tears. His action had confirmed it all; he was hiding something; he was aware of it all.
“Father, I demand an answer,” I stated emotionlessly. I was numb to everything at this point; I only wanted the truth.
He turned back to me and wiped beads of sweat forming on his skin. Then he crouched and held my hand, pulling me up and trying to support me by the waste.
“Leave me alone!” I yelled, struggling with him.
“I think we need to go.”
“No, answer me; I don't want to go.”
“Sapphire…”
“Leave me,”
“Sapphire…”
“Leave me,”
"Sapphire, you need to...”
“I said leave me alone.” I pushed him away, and this time, even though he had gotten me up, I didn't fall. I staggered back two steps but regained my balance immediately. Jason ran towards me, thinking I needed support. He most likely felt guilty for what he had done and thought helping me would be compensation.
“Stay the hell away from me.” I commanded and took some steps back. A year drop on my skin made me realise that I was now crying. I didn't let that bother me; maybe I couldn't help it anymore.
“You're such a hypocrite, but I'll come back to address your case; for now, I'm talking to my father, and I'll really appreciate it if you could leave us.” I addressed Jason.
His puppy blue eyes pleaded with me and stayed locked with my eyes, begging for forgiveness and a chance to explain, but I didn't want to give him one. I mean, he was supposed to be my mate, and I just found out about a very sensitive secret. The least I expected from him was support, but instead, he was trying to kill me by taking away my wheelchair.
"Leave,” I said once more, backing him and facing my father, who also stood helpless.
“I'll love it if you could trust me, not with your heart but with your soul.” He whispered to my ears and walked out of the room, smashing something when he got outside.
I sighed heavily and shut my eyes for a few seconds. My heart was so heavy and weak, and I couldn't wait to be in Leo's arms while he comforted me. For now, I was grateful that I had found the truth and that I could walk again.
“So, spill it, all of it, the truth.”
My father let his head hang low in disappointment. He had always been a brave, bold, and confident man, so it should be no surprise that this was my first time seeing him like this. He tried to speak but shut his mouth immediately. I had had enough of this; I couldn't any longer.
“In fact, I can't do this,” I shrugged and was about to go downstairs to Leo when I heard his voice.
“I know you saw it in the book. I had hidden this place for years now to stop you from finding out, but I guess you did. It was your destiny, by the way.” He shook his head and laughed a sarcastic laugh. Obviously mocking himself for something he thought he could do.
“You were so small and just a 5-month-old puppy; we couldn't leave you alone when we saw you that cold night in the woods. You were in a basket, and just by your side was a note from your real father.”
I shut my eyes and let the tears flow. Hearing the man I'd called father all my life call another my father broke me more than I had expected. I wiped the tears with my hand and cupped my face in my palm.
“This must be a lot for you.”
I nodded my head.
“Mhmm hmm, go on though; I'll be fine.”
He proceeded.
“The note was a plea for help. According to him, your birth mother had died during childbirth because your power had been too great for her to handle. She didn't have the strength to withstand your force.”
I became breathless and restless at the same time. Dad rushed up to me and rubbed my back.
“Pumpkin, pumpkin,” I felt dizzy, and my vision was becoming blurry. I couldn't see anything and could only hear my father's fading voice calling out to me and also screaming Jason's name for help.
“I killed my mother,” I muttered. “I killed my birth mother, and I was about to kill this one too.” Flashbacks to my mother laying in the hospital bed clouded my mind and made me panic even more. I felt my feet become too heavy and became scared that I was losing them again.
“Dad, my legs, my legs,” I panicked, gasping for breath.
“I killed my mother.”
"Pumpkin, calm down; don't think about it like that. You're an elemental with different strengths; not many elementals have mothers. They're just too strong.” Dad tried to pacify me, although that didn't work; it just made me feel worse.
I had just discovered that my parents weren't my parents; I had killed my birth mother, and that I was an evil creature.
What could possibly be worse?
I felt my legs betray me, and I slumped.
“Sapphire!”
