Chapter 16 Chapter Sixteen

Chapter 16 Chapter Sixteen
I turned around looked at him.

He threw the documents on the table before pointing to a cabinet that was on the opposite side. I looked at it and noticed that it was full of different types of achievements, plaques and awards.

"There's a small box at the bottom of the cabinet, I need it," he said, looking me straight in the eyes.

I waited for a few seconds before sighing and going to fetch his box like the assistant I was. I opened it before bending over and started to move things around so I could find it.

I saw a small red box with a lock on it and I took it up before closing the cabinet.

After handing it to him, I was thinking about leaving but I stayed put. I wondered what else he had in his mind. I do believe he wants to work me out as much as possible.

Only because he despised me.

"You can go now and ensure the documents on your desk are sorted through and edited. I don't tolerate laziness and unfinished work."

I left his office and went to mine. The first thing I noticed was the pile of documents on my desk. I rubbed my forehead before closing my door and taking a seat in my chair. I had no clue how to exactly edit these documents.

As I looked through the one on top, there was a knock on the door. It opened a few seconds later, revealing a girl dressed in grey work pants and a white blouse. What made her stand out was that she was bald. She was beautiful nonetheless, with bright brown eyes and dimples.

"Hi, you must be the boss's new assistant. I'm Deidra," she said, extending her hand.

"Vanessa," I replied, shaking her hand. She seemed friendly, but you could never trust people too quickly. Some were sheep in wolf's clothing. They might even want something from you.

"Since you're new here, I thought I'd drop by and give you some pointers. The boss's last assistant wasn't very good at her job, and he fired her a few weeks later."

I gave her a look of bewilderment before going back to my chair.

"Do you know what he means by editing and sorting through these documents?" I asked.

"It means you'll have to go through them and either stamp, correct grammar errors or even go to meetings to seal deals. Being a personal assistant comes with more duties than a regular assistant," she replied.

I nodded. I had no idea when I'll be finished with these.

"I'll leave you to work and if you need anything my office is on the floor below this. Oh, and if you want to have lunch with us girls, you're always welcome," she said, giving me a smile.

"Thank you," I replied. She nodded before leaving. She was definitely a sweet soul.

I started going through the documents, making sure to read carefully, hoping there weren't any errors. If there was one, I'd have to type it over. the only logical solution I could come up with. Most of the documents were about shipments or collaborations.

This was going to be the most stressful job I'd ever had… well, aside from my past.

I spent the next half an hour just reading through and found two documents that will have to be typed over. I stamped a few of them and stacked them neatly on the other side of my desk.

I glanced at the clock and saw that it was twelve so I guessed it was lunch time.

The door opened and Mordechai stood there before gesturing for me to follow him. He walked away as I got up and left the office after taking up my small purse. He was walking really fast but since I didn't want to be close to him it worked out just fine for me.

He pressed the elevator button for the bottom floor, and I stood in the corner with my arms crossed over my chest. I glanced at him, and surprisingly, he wasn't on his phone. His hands were in his pockets as he stared straight ahead, lost in thought.

Probably thinking of a million tasks to give me.

The elevator came to a halt, and I followed him out. He walked down a hall before heading down some stairs. I waited a moment, then placed one foot after the other, following him. Where do these stairs lead?

I got my answer when I reached the last step and was greeted by a few cars. I saw him seated in a black SUV and walked up to the car before getting into the back. The shutters lifted as he pulled out of the garage.

I stayed quiet, wondering where he was driving. After a few seconds, he began unbuttoning his jacket and then took it off. I turned my head to look out the window.

"Are you halfway through the paperwork yet?" he asked.

"Not yet. I'll get them done as soon as possible," I replied in a bored tone, then returned to staring out the window.

The car came to a slow pace a few seconds later as he pulled up at a restaurant. Not just any restaurant, a very expensive one from the looks of it. I wasn't planning on spending too much money for simply lunch.

"Take my jacket and follow me," he said before exiting the car.

I groaned before copying his actions and taking up the jacket. Why did he remove it in the first place?

The inside was everything luxury could be. He took a seat at the window and I sat in a chair on the opposite side. I fold the jacket before placing it on my lap. I looked at the menu and the only thing I saw that was both cheap and could full my stomach was shrimp alfredo.

"Good day to both of you. Welcome to Divine Dining, I'll be your waitress for today, may I take your order?" she said, giving us a pleasant smile.

Mordechai ordered his lunch which consisted of a heavy meal. I told her my order and she wrote it down before walking away.

I played with my fingers as I kept staring out the window. He had taken out his phone and started typing away.

"Vanessa?"

I glanced behind me and saw Reid of all people sitting having lunch. He had this smirk on his face as he stood up as if he was coming over to my side. I turned around and prayed he wasn't.

But when does prayer ever work like that?

I noticed how Mordechai had put his phone down and was just staring at me. I heard the sound of a chair being moved and before I could blink, Reid had pushed it beside me and sat down.

I felt a strange sensation and couldn't figure out why. He glanced over at Mordechai, who was looking back and forth between us with intense eyes.

"I'm not interested, Reid, so could you just leave me alone for good?" I said, but he only smiled

"I like you vanessa, from the first day I saw you-

I cut him off by placing my hand over his mouth.

"I don't care if you like me or not. I'm not interested in dating and even if I was, I wouldn't date you. So please go away and don't speak to me again."

His face got serious and he looked at me for a while longer before getting up and pulling the chair away.

The waitress brought our food, but neither of us touched it right away.

"Did you know it's unprofessional to behave that way in front of your boss?" Mordechai asked, and I mentally groaned.

Was he serious?

"I have no clue as to what you mean. I'm sure you saw everything play out and as to why I had to put him in his place," I replied.

I averted my eyes and dug into my meal.

It felt like everything I did around him was a problem. I sighed mentally and continued eating, deliberately ignoring his face and eyes.

Four hours later, I had finished all the paperwork.

It was after five, and time to leave. I grabbed my purse and the documents and headed out of the office. I knocked on his door, but hearing no answer, I opened it. He wasn't there, so I placed the files on his desk and left.

Once I left the building, I made my way to the cab stand. My fingers were a bit sore from the typing and skipping through pages. I hailed a cab and entered the back. I laid my head on the door as he drove off.

My mind was going haywire.

I was stressed and I felt a wave of depression kicking in. Why did my life had to be so hard? Why couldn't I have the most loving family? Why did they have to put me out?

I wiped a stray tear that left my right eye. Crying wouldn't solve anything, it will only make me feel worse.

It was almost dark when the cab pulled up at the house. I paid the driver and started to walk across the lawn when I felt like someone was watching me. I hurriedly opened the door and locked it before turning on a few lights to illuminate the place.

I was starting to feel paranoid. I knew what Zed was capable of and I didn't want him to know where I was staying.

I went to my room and locked the door before starting to strip my clothes. I needed a long bath and some good rest.
